Day Four: Play To a FInal

Vilamoura Casino
Vilamoura Casino

The tables have shrunk from nine to eight-handed, the prize money has risen from €7,263 for 56th to €11,174 for the next players here at PokerStars EPT Vilamoura leaving the competition at the tables for the relaxation at the beach, and the atmosphere is electric.

Yesterday saw many hopefuls and field favourites head to the rail, including the last of the PokerStars Team Pros JP Kelly and Day 1A's chip leader Team Online member Andre Coimbra, while Luca Pagano cashed for a record-breaking 16th time at the EPT.

Martin Jacobson leads the field, but as we saw yesterday, the chip lead can and usually does change hands repeatedly before a winner of a 384-runner tournament is crowned. The largest tournament ever held in Portugal is about to play down to a final table today starting at noon.

And We're Off!

It's strangely quiet in the Casino Vilamoura today, but all 24 runners have made it here more or less on time and the cards are in the air.

56 minutes remain of this level.

50% of Remaining Women in Tournament Bust (24th: €11,174)

Carolyn Gray
Carolyn Gray

Right off the bat Carolyn Gray moved in preflop (a short stack with 101k) with {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs} in the cutoff - and then Sergio Coutinho in the small blind moved in over the top, isolating with his early doors {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}! A good hand into a great one, and the {8-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}{2-Diamonds} board did nothing to help her - handshakes all round and PokerStars qualifier Gray leaves the tournament in 24th place, winning €11,174.

Eliran Argelazi Eliminated in 23rd Place (€11,174)

Eliran Argelazi
Eliran Argelazi

Marton Czuczor opened for 26,000 and it folded around to Eliran Argelazi in the big blind who shoved for 169,000. Czuczor ummed and ahhed very briefly and then made the call.

Czuczor: {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}
Argelazi: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

Board: {7-Spades}{9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{k-Clubs}

"OK, good luck guys," Argelazi told the table as he shook hands with Czuczor. Argelazi left, while Czuczor moved up to over 600,000.

Teeing off and Shuffling Up - Fairways and Felts Challenge

Thanks to Mad Harper of PokerStars for filling us in on the early morning action at the golf course today, as poker players headed into the warm sunshine to test themselves in a different arena...

A host of stars took some time away from Solverde Casino today to head
for beautiful Pinhal Golf Course - and the first stage of the Fairways
and Felts golf-and-poker contest. The €1,100 buy-in event even
attracted England football legend Teddy Sheringham, although he had to
cut his game short after just six holes to get back in time for the
Main Event where he’s still got 301,000 in chips .

The 14 golfers were split into four teams and played the match as a
Texas scramble – each player on the team hits their ball, the team
chooses the best shot and then everyone takes their next shot
(including putts) from that spot.

The teams were as follows (nationality and handicap in brackets):

A) Team PokerStars Pros Daniel Negreanu (Canada, 11.5) and Marcin
Horecki (Poland, 20.8)., Friend of PokerStars Sheringham (UK, 16) and
golf pro Tom Larsen (Norway, 0.5)
B) Team PokerStars Pro John Duthie (UK, 24), Joachim Selzer (Germany,
24), former Dutch national team golfer Willem Vork (Netherlands, 2)
C) Team PokerStars Pro Pieter de Korver (Netherlands, 17), James
Dempsey (UK, 18), Roderick van Welsun (Netherlands, 2), Eddie Tasbas
(Sweden, scratch).
D) Team PokerStars Pro and Challenge host JP Kelly (UK, 24), Jeff
Sarwer (Canada, 20), Gary Bain (Canada, 20)

Part 2 of the Challenge takes place with a NLHE poker tournament
tomorrow back at Solverde Casino in Vilamoura. Non-golfers can still
compete in the poker part of the tournament if they wish (for €840),
but lose the chance to win bonus chips by performing well on the golf
course. Extra chips up for grabs include 500 chips for every stroke
under par and 500 chips for the longest drive or putt. A hole-in-one
on the 8th hole wins a WCOOP Main Event entry.

Leonzio's Mistake Costs Him Dear

Marco Leonzio - Not. A. Happy. Bunny.
Marco Leonzio - Not. A. Happy. Bunny.

Dmitry Gromov opened preflop to 28,000 from UTG and Konsta Vesterinen 3-bet two seats down to 63,000. Marco Leonzio called but hadn't actually seen the 3-bet, he had only been planning to call the Russian's open but now found himself cold-calling the 3-bet out of position.

Gromov now also called to see a {A-Hearts} {9-Hearts} {6-Diamonds} flop which was checked to Vesterinen who bet 76,000. Leonzio now check-raised all-in and Gromov quickly called.

"Call, call, yes call," said Vesterinen quickly turning over {A-Diamonds} {A-Spades} and Leonzio now was crestfallen, turning over {6-Spades} {6-Hearts} for the underset.

"No six!" pleaded Vesterinen as though the case six was ready to strike but the {Q-Hearts} came on the turn, "No six, no heart!" as the begging grew stronger. The river was the {Q-Spades} and Vesterinen doubled up to 700,000 while Leonzio dropped to 570,000.

"I'm sorry," said the winner, though probably not too sorry.
