EPT Barcelona: Day 4

The man to catch, Giuseppe Pantaleo
The man to catch, Giuseppe Pantaleo

Hello and welcome back to the Casino de Barcelona where 24 players will return to their seats, each guaranteed no less than €17,000 but each of the having at least one eye on the massive €825,000 first prize.

Leading the way is the Italian sounding German, Giuseppe Pantaleo who won a huge pot from Kristoffer Thorsson near the close of play yesterday to help him on his way to his ending total of 2,309,000 chips . The action folded to Thorsson and all of a sudden there was a raise, three-bet, four-bet shove and a call! Pantaleo held {k-Spades}{k-Hearts} with Thorsson's hand being {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs}. The board ran out {9-Spades}{9-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{5-Spades} and Pantaleo was the new chip leader.

Hot on his heels is Alessandro Longobardi on 1,863,000 and Thor Stang on 1,447,000 who showed up yesterday with a glittery Batman t-short on, maybe today he will come as another superhero and knock Pantaleo off his perch?

In the middle of the pack is Konstantin Puchkov, who won his first bracelet at this year's WSOP and he will be looking to add an EPT title to his name too. Towards the bottom of the chip counts is Kristoffer Thorsson, who lost the massive pot late on as mentioned above, but if the Swede manages to pick up some chips early on in proceedings, he will be the biggest threat to the rest of the field. As things stand now he really has his work cut out for him, but anything can happen in poker!

Play resumes at 1200 noon and will continue until only the final table of eight players remain. Stay tuned to PokerNews for the very best in live tournament coverage.

Our Feature Table

Table 1 has been selected as the feature table and therefore our access to the players is extremely limited. We do have a live feed from the table so we will try to bring you as many updates as we possibly can.

Sekularac Takes the First Hand

The last player to take his seat at Table 3 was Ognjen Sekularac. He may have been the last player to take his seat but he was the first to put a raise into the pot in the very first hand. Sekularac who started events in 6th place put in a raise of 58,000 and received a three-bet to his direct left from Jose Luis Navarro Giner. Sekularac called and the flop was dealt.

Flop: {q-Diamonds} {a-Hearts} {k-Diamonds}

Sekularac checked and Navarro bet 140,000 and Sekularac made the call. The turn was {10-Hearts} and Sekularac spoke very quietly to Navarro and he mucked his hand. I can only assume he told him he was all-in.

Sekularac wins our first substantial pot.

Bognanni Making A Nuisance of Himself

Marco Bognanni
Marco Bognanni

So far the feature table has been a very cagey affair, with most pots being settled preflop. Italian, Marco Bognanni has been by far the most active player at the table and he has shown he is not afraid to splash his chips around.

In a hand just completed now, Bognanni raised to 45,000 preflop and then called Dominik Nitsche's three-bet to 105,000.

Flop: {2-Spades}{9-}{K-Hearts}

Bognanni checked, Nitsche fired a bet of 135,000 and then instantly folded as Bognanni moved all-in.

Candido for the Camera

A bold move from Candido Goncalves as he check-raised 150,000 on the turn of a {k-Clubs}{j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{3-Hearts} board over a 71,000 bet. Across the table, proud Canadian Todd Sisley (he's wearing some sort of red sports top emblazoned with an enormous maple leaf) called.

The river was a doesn't-help-anyone {5-Diamonds} and Goncalves quickly announced all in to cover Sisley, who had just 475,000 left. Sisley tanked up for a while, his mouth agape, and after less than two minutes Goncalves called the clock. TD Thomas Kremser in his infinite wisdom decided that it hadn't been long enough and gave Sisley an extra 30 seconds or so before commencing the countdown, but Sisley timed out anyway and his hand was declared dead.

Goncalves showed him pocket deuces for a rather dramatic effect.

Kristoffer Thorsson Eliminated in 24th Place (€20,000)

Kristoffer Thorsson eliminated in 24th place

PokerStars Online Qualifier Kristoffer Thorsson arrived at Day 4 with one of the lowest stacks remaining in the tournament. With the blind structure at 15000/30000 with a 300 ante it wasn't going to be long before Thorsson got his stack in the middle hoping and praying for that double up.

Luis Rufas opened up the action from early position with a raise of 56,000 and Thorsson seized the opportunity from the button with a shove for 245,000. The toothpick chewing Jani Kristian Rasinen asked for a count before folding and Rufas announced call.

Rufas: {k-Diamonds} {k-Clubs}

Thorsson: {a-Hearts} {q-Spades}

The flop was {4-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} {9-Hearts}. Thorsson needed an ace or running hearts to keep his tournament hopes alive. Turn {2-Hearts} and Thorsson now had even more outs and needed an ace or a heart. The river was red but a diamon in the shape of the {10-Diamonds} and Thorsson was eliminated.

Royal Invasion

We were seeing double at the two outer tables for a few moments - two all ins in quick succession, the two of them almost suspiciously similar in nature.

Hand #1

We battled through the thicket of TV personnel, equipment and other media to find Kent Lundmark (button) all in with {k-Spades}{k-Clubs} against small blind Ognjen Sekularac's {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}. The board ran out {3-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Hearts} and he doubled up to 1.5 million, Sekularac left with 900,000.

Hand #2

And no sooner was that hand over with than at the next table, we found Jani Kristian Rasinen all in with {k-Hearts}{k-Spades} under the gun, and the gent to his immediate left, Thor Stang, holding the {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. Again, there were no nasty surprises on the {4-Hearts}{k-Clubs}{j-Clubs}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds} board and Rasinen doubled up to 1.2 million. Stang dropped to 1.07 million.
