End Of Day 2

Jonathan Weekes - Chip Daddy
Jonathan Weekes - Chip Daddy

After two long gruelling Day 1's, Day 2 with it's 75 minute levels has proved much shorter. Englishman Jonathan Weekes has propelled himself up the board to an astonishing 751,900 which has put him head and shoulders above the other 83 players that will go into Day 3 of this tournament.

The key hand for Weekes that put his ascent into overdrive is without a shadow of a doubt, the {Q-} {Q-} where his 5-bet all-in put Luca Pagano to the ultimate test and actually forced the Italian to pass Kings preflop in what would've been a 500,000+ pot.

Elsewhere Ivan Demidov's big win with a flush against Ville Wahlbeck's apparent straight has set the Russian in a real position to challenge for this event, while Team Pokerstars Pros Arnaud Mattern, Katja Thater and Vadim Markushevski have all made it through to Day 3.

Tomorrow the plan will be to play down to 24 players and with the bubble at 56, it could be a very interesting day. Full chip counts will follow shortly, we'll see you tomorrow at 12pm (GMT+2)

Brought to His Neess

Matvey Linov, who as we mentioned earlier hasn't had a great day, just now experienced a change in fortune.

He was holding a rather uninspiring {a-Spades}{3-Diamonds} and was up against the all-in Danny Neess' {j-Hearts}{j-Spades} when the board rolled out a rather surprising {8-Spades}{3-Hearts}{3-Spades}{9-Spades}{8-Clubs}. The luckless Neess hit the rail just before the end of play, and Linov upped his stack to what looked like roughly 300,000.

Vadim Nearly Gets Clubbed To Death

Chips went a-flying into the pot on a {7-Clubs} {3-Spades} {5-Clubs} flop between Nathanael Filskov and Vadim Markushevski. Filskov calling all-in eventually with {A-Clubs} {J-Clubs} against the Belarussian's {8-Spades} {8-Hearts}, the turn {10-Clubs} ridding the hand of any sense of tension and the {K-Clubs} river.

Filskov jumped up to 260,000 while Markushevski dropped to 65,000.

Dmitry Bayramov has been knocked out.

Weekes Lead Gets Stronger

Jonathan Weekes
Jonathan Weekes

A massive hand just played out on the back corner table in the tournament room. It's a minefield of a lineup, with many big stacks including Jonathan Weekes, Luca Pagano, Ali Tekintamgac, and Daniel Aldridge. But now, it's just all about Weekes.

We arrived with a lot of money in the middle on a {5-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} board. Aldridge bet something in the 20,000s, and Weekes called. A lot of river cards could have made things interesting, and the {4-Hearts} was certainly one of them. Aldridge carefully bet 42,300. He looked ill when Weekes responded by raising to 150,000. Aldridge spent a few minutes in agonized thought. Weekes leaned back in his chair, arms folded across his stomach, trying to appear calm while barely breathing. Finally, Aldridge announced a call. And Weekes got the chance to show {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} for rivered quads.

After shipping a chunk of his stack across the felt, Aldridge was left with 210,000. Weekes is the towering chip leader now with 780,000.

Manuel Stimulation

Manuel Bevand - a very lucky boy
Manuel Bevand - a very lucky boy

Award for Luckiest Man Of The Tournament must surely go to French pro Manuel Bevand.

If you recall, late in the day yesterday he cracked Pham Thanh Hai's aces, and then on the very next hand he cracked legendary media member Benjo Gallen's pocket kings - the latter of these two hands making him briefly very unpopular in the press room.

Cracking aces and kings in consecutive hands is pretty impressive, but Bevand seems to have got only more lucky since then. Earlier today he flopped quads - must be nice - and just now, he managed not only to flop a king-high straight flush but also to get paid off in full by an unfortunate gentleman who flopped the ace-high flush. He's at 223,000 now.

Sarwer Snuffed

Sarwer needs a drink of a different kind after today.
Sarwer needs a drink of a different kind after today.

It's not been a good day for Jeff Sarwer. He's been short for the last several hours and was down to his last 10 big blinds when he ran {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} into {a-Spades}{q-Hearts} to double up the only person at the table whom he covered. The hand left Sarwer with two big blinds. Although he got his money in with a chance to quadruple up, his {j-Hearts}{4-Hearts} failed to hit, relegating Sarwer to the rail.

Dalimore Dallies Less

Antonio Buonanno opened from late position to 7,000 and Mark Dalimore in his splendidly large amount of Ed Hardy bling defended in the big blind.

The flop came {K-Hearts} {Q-Hearts} {4-Hearts} and Dalimore checked letting Buoanno bet 11,000 after much thought. Dalimore gave it several minutes before check/raising to 22,000 and therein was a further few minutes before the Italian folded, declaring the Englishman had "Three queens."

Well, not quite. Dalimore showed {K-Clubs} {3-Clubs} instead.
