Day of Rest for Sabat

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Eddy Sabat
Eddy Sabat

There was a limp in early position and a limp from the gent in the small blind as well before Eddy Sabat shoved from the big blind for his last 11,800. Sabat couldn't have been feeling great about it as soon as the original limper called, and even worse when the small blind reshoved. The limp/caller folded, and sure enough, Sabat was in some trouble.

Sabat: {a-Hearts}{5-Spades}
Small blind: {a-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}

Board: {10-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{7-Clubs}

Blom Takes a Hit, Still Has More Than He Started With

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Viktor Blom
Viktor Blom

Viktor Blom must have won a couple pots at the start of the day as when we witnessed him losing one, he was still in possession of around 150,000 at the end of it.

The board read {2-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} and Blom's opponent bet 3,100 which the Swede called. But a moment later Blom mucked and nodded as his opponent revealed {q-Spades}{10-Diamonds}, the legendary high stakes player's equanimity apparently not disturbed by this small hit.

Hallaert and Jacobsen Add to Their Stacks

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Kenny Hallaert has just added a few thousand more chips to his stack and Philip Jacobsen has been doing some good work over at table seven.

A player in the cut-off opened to 2,300 and Hallaert called in the small blind. The flop was {8-Diamonds} {q-Spades} {4-Spades} and the turn was the {k-Hearts} and both streets were checked through. The river was the {k-Hearts} and Hallaert took the pot down with a 4,200 bet.

Over at table seven Philip Jacobsen limped in the small blind and his opponent in the big blind raised to 2,600. Jacobsen pondered for a little while before setting his opponent all-in and he quickly called.

Jacobsen: {3-Hearts} {3-Spades}
Big Blind: {7-Hearts} {7-Clubs}

The flop was {4-Spades} {3-Clubs} {6-Clubs} and Jacobsen had come from behind to take the lead. The big blind desperately needed a seven or a five but the {6-Spades} and {9-Clubs} turn and river eliminated the big blind and put Jacobsen in the 180,000 area.

Bansi - Good Friend, Bad Idea

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Praz Bansi
Praz Bansi

It's Day 2, obviously, and the combination of relatively early ("poker early", we like to call it) noon starts and excellent French wines of an evening have begun to take their toll on the players.

One player is feeling particularly wretched today, though. Praz Bansi had almost no sleep at all last night, as he stayed up sweating his buddy Sam Trickett over at the Super High Roller event at the Aussie Millions. Trickett came second for A$1.4 million which must have been delightful for everyone involved, but Bansi is now looking more than a little fuzzy as he attempts to score his first ever EPT cash. We'll let you know how he gets on...

Bringing the Rufas Down

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante

Luis Rufas, EPT Barcelona 10th place finisher, spent much of yesterday in the upper echelons of the chip counts - until he had a run-in with a clearly unexpected opponent's set. Just now he's taken another hit, and he's now down to 27,000, less than the Day 1 starting stack.

He opened to 2,200 under the gun and it folded right around to the gentleman in the big blind who made the call to see a {10-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} flop. He check-called 2,300 from Rufas, and they continued to the turn.

Both players checked the {j-Clubs} turn and indeed the {2-Clubs} river as well, at which point the gent in the big blind turned over {k-Spades}{10-Clubs} for a pair of tens. Rufas presumably couldn't beat it as he mucked, and he looked incredibly frustrated as he assessed his remaining stack.

And We Are Off

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Catherine Hong
Catherine Hong

Welcome to day two of EPT Deauville.

Catherine Hong is walking around the casino trying to find herself a new players bracelet so she can get in the tournament area to play. Ludovic Lacay is staring at the monitor trying to locate his seat while a cameraman follows his every move.

In the tournament area Kristoffer Thorsson has started well after a well timed squeeze from the small blind brought him 5,100 additional uncontested chips.

Team Pokerstars Pro Christophe de Meulder has not started off so well after losing a substantial portion of his chips in this hand.

A player we will call the cigarette smoking man (because he had a pack of cigarettes in front of him) raised to 2,700 from under-the-gun. The action folded around to de Meulder who called in the big blind. The flop was a very interesting {9-Spades} {8-Hearts} {a-Spades} and de Meulder checked to the cigarette smoking man who bet 3,500 and de Meulder called.

The turn paired the ace when the dealer gave us the {a-Hearts} and both players checked.

The river was the {k-Hearts} filling a potential back door flush draw. De Meulder counted out a bet and placed 6,800 across the line and the cigarette smoking man made a huge raise making it 26,800 to play and de Meulder folded.

Day 2 Dawns, Dryly

Guillaume de la Gorce
Guillaume de la Gorce

Good morning and welcome back to the spacious annex of the Casino Barriere where 501 happy survivors are not affected by the fact that it's finally stopped raining outside, as they are instead preparing to get down to the serious business of Day 2.

Chip leader as we head into the day is Guillaume de la Gorce. Fresh off a fifth place finish at WPT Marrakech at the end of last year, France's finest finished top of the Day 1a pops on 196,800 and is the man to beat as we start off on the long road to the money.

Not far behind him are fellow Frenchmen Bruno Launais (already a veteran of two EPT final tables), singing legend Patrick Bruel and Team PokerStars Pro Viktor "Isildur1" Blom. Still, we have to lose almost 400 players before anyone gets paid, and it remains anyone's game. Also still in the running are Bruno Fitoussi, Antoine Saout, Praz Bansi, Nacho Barbero and pokernews.nl blogger Frank Op de Woerd.

Play is scheduled to resume at noon local time, so don't go anywhere.
