EPT Prague Day 2 Begins at Noon

Tournament Room
Tournament Room

A record number of players for an EPT event in Prague was set yesterday with the total number of entrants standing at 998. With registration still open until noon today we could still break the magic four figures.

Amir Lehavot from the USA, who finished third in the WSOP Main Event in November this year, is the clear chip leader finishing at the top of the pack on Day 1b with 239,300. He is ahead of Day 1a leader Tiberu-Florian Georgescu who has 191,100, followed closely behind by Sigurd Eskeland (184,600) and Ari Engel (172,800).

Team PokerStars Pros have made a very strong showing so far in the Main Event and leading the way for them is Luca Pagano with 137,600 chips. Pagano really had to tough it out yesterday but came through strongly in the end to remain in contention. Other remaining Team PokerStars pros are Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu (74,600), Bertrand "Elky" Grospellier (79,700), Christophe De Meulder (40,100), Matthias De Meulder (25,200), Eugene Katchalov (81,900), Dag Palovic (79,900), and Jonathan Duhamel (16,100).

Some of the other well know players that we’ll be keeping an eye on include former EPT Prague champion Martin Finger (58,600), Ireland’s Steve O'Dwyer (60,200), Shannon Shorr (40,400), Juha Helppi (34,400), Max Silver (87,100), and rising star Sergio Aido (81,200).

We begin with 549 players who have made it through to Day 2 and they face six levels of play today. There will be no dinner break, so it will be a relatively early night. There’s sure to be some interesting dynamics early on as the big stacks seek to exert some pressure, and the short stacks look to get an early double up to give themselves a chance of staying ahead of those ever increasing blinds.

Join your PokerNews reporting team right here for all the updates throughout the day as we bring you bust outs, drama, interviews and more. You can also follow live action from the feature table with commentary from the dynamic duo James Hartigan and Joe Stapleton at Pokerstars.tv.

An Orbit w/ WSOP Europe Main Event Champ Adrian Mateos

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Back in October, a 19-year-old Spaniard by the name of Adrian Mateos defeated a stacked final table to win the 2013 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event for €1,000,000! Mateos did so by defeating accomplished pro Fabrice Soulier in heads-up play. Others Mateos outlasted were Dominik Nitsche (3rd - €400,000), Ravi Raghavan (5th - €176,000) and Benny Spindler (6th - €126,000).

“[With] more money I can play more events,” said an elated Mateos after the win. “You will see me more... Next year I can’t [go to Vegas], I have to wait, but I will be there.”

While Mateos has to wait to go to Vegas, he doesn't to play on the EPT. Mateos is in action today (you only have to be 18 to play in Prague), and we decided to spend an orbit with the young superstar.

Hand #1 (Middle Position): An under-the-gun player opened for 1,800 and Mateos made the call. Russia's Alexander Lakhov came along from the big blind and three players saw a flop of {j-Spades}{4-Spades}{8-Clubs}. The original raiser checked, Mateos bet 3,400, and Lakhov called. The under-the-gun player folded and it was heads-up action to the {10-Clubs}, which both players checked.

When the {6-Hearts} completed the board on the river, Mateos checked and then folded to a bet of 8,000 by Alexander Lakhov.

Hand #2 (UTG+1): The under-the-gun player folded and so did Mateos.

Hand #3 (Under the Gun): Mateos was first to act and folded.

Hand #4 (Big Blind): The under-the-gun player opened for 1,700 and was met by a three-bet to 4,200 by Lakhov. When action reached Mateos, he folded.

Hand #5 (Small Blind): Sean Prendiville raised to 1,800 from the hijack and Mateos folded.

Hand #6 (Button): Lakhov opened for 2,000 under the gun and everyone folded, including Mateos.

Hand #7 (Cutoff): Mateos opened the pot for 1,700 and received a call from Lakhov in the big blind. Lakhov proceeded to check-call a bet of 2,000 on the {9-Clubs}{j-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} flop and then both players checked the {J-Spades} turn. When the {3-Diamonds} completed the board on the river, Lakhov led out for 2,100 and Mateos folded.

Hand #8 (Hijack): A player opened for 1,700 and Mateos folded.

The Defending Champ Busts

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Ramzi Jelassi
Ramzi Jelassi

Elfad Mammadov opened for 1,800 and was raised by the active Nikov Dobromir Georgiev to 5,200. Sitting in the small blind was former EPT Prague champion Ramzi Jelassi, who had folded to a river bet a few hands before to leave him with a stack of 14,100, and he now moved it all in.

Mammadov took about three minutes to make his decision. He had both stacks covered and perhaps thought Georgiev was at it, but he eventually folded. Georgiev made the call with his {5-Spades}{5-Hearts} and was racing the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} of Jelassi. The flop was dealt {q-Clubs}{k-Spades}{j-Clubs} and it was all looking pretty rosy for Jelassi, but the turn {5-Diamonds} shot Georgiev into the lead. No salvation on the river as the {9-Hearts} sealed his fate and there was to be no repeat victory for the Swedish PokerStars player.

Mammadov, who had taken a long time to fold, was asked what he folded? {8-Clubs}{9-Clubs} he responded, claiming he was getting the right price. A few other players at the table were not happy about the time he took, one pointing out that there were no TV cameras on him.

Gaelle Baumann Eliminated by Anaras Alekberovas

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Gaëlle Baumann
Gaëlle Baumann

Gaelle Baumann was standing on the rail busy with her phone and told us she had just busted. In dramatic fashion, we might add.

A player in middle position had opened to 2,000 and Baumann had flatted the button with pocket kings because Anaras Alekberovas behind her was "squeezing every hand". This time around the Lithuanian didn't squeeze though, he called from the big blind. On {8-}{9-}{2-} rainbow Alekberovas lead out for 4,000. The initial raiser made the call and Baumann raised it up to 12,000.

She received two calls and the dealer put out the {8-Hearts} as the turn. After two checks Baumann shoved all in for her remaining 23,000. Alekberovas looked her up showing {8-Spades}{3-Spades}. Baumann needed a king but wouldn't get one on the river.

EPT Prague Will Crown a New Winner

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Martin Finger
Martin Finger

Martin Finger has busted the last hand before the break. Former tablemate Van Opzeeland told the story of Finger running {K-}{J-} into a set on {Q-}{10-}{5-}. The up and down straight draw didn't materialize for the Season's 8 winner which made his twenty minute break into a break as long as he wanted it to be.

With the departure of Finger and Jelassi's bust out earlier today, there are now no more former EPT Prague winners in the field. David Boyaciyan, who made the final table here the last two years finishing second in season eight and third in season nine, is still in the running though.

19% of the Field Participated in the Skrill Last Longer Competition

Level 11 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Skrill
Skrill

One name that keeps popping up here at the EPT Prague is Skrill – which isn’t a player, but rather an online payment solutions company that aims to evolve “the way people pay and get paid globally.” Skrill is branded throughout the venue and also have a booth where players can sign up for their popular "Last Longer Competition."

The Skrill Last Longer competition will be held at each stop on this season’s EPT, of which they’re an official sponsor. The promotion is simple – players sign up for the promotion either online (preregistration is available) or at the Skrill booth (which will be present at each stop); don a Skrill patch; and then aim to be the last man or woman standing. The last player remaining will then receive their buy-in back via their Skrill account.

While Skrill is upping the ante for Season 10 with a bigger branding initiative, this isn’t their first appearance on the EPT; as a matter of fact, they were a sponsor of Season 8 and have held previous “Last Longer” promotions.

Here in Prague, 191 players (19% of the total field) signed up for the competition, though only 106 of them made it to Day 2 including Denys Drobyna (Ukraine), the winner of the Last Longer in the EPT Prague Season 8.

Here's the long list of 106 Skrillees still in contention at the start of Day 2.

"Just the Hearts Then" - Lacay Busts Rettenmaier

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Marvin Rettenmaier
Marvin Rettenmaier

EPT San Remo winner Ludovic Lacay opened under-the-gun to 3,500 and got met by a reraise to 8,300 from multiple WPT winner Marvin Rettenmaier. David Williams in the cutoff and the players on the button, small blind and big blind quickly folded but Lacay had other plans in mind. He made it 21,000 and Rettenmaier made the call.

{5-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} on the flop and Lacay bet out 20,000. That bet didn't faze Rettenmaier though, who didn't need much time before calling. The turn brought the {6-Clubs} into play and Lacay checked. Rettenmaier bet out 33,200 and Lacay thought about it for awhile before announcing to be all in. Rettenmaier looked a tiny bit concerned but called almost immediately anyway. Lacay showed his {Q-Hearts}{9-Hearts} and was in bad shape against Rettenmaier's flopped set with {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}.

"Just the hearts then", Lacay said with a smirk on his face like he already knew what the river was going to be. The dealer wasted no time and burned a card before letting the {K-Hearts} hit the felt. The dealer began counting Lacay's stack but it was clear from the get go to the players involved that Lacay (130,000) had more than Rettenmaier (110,000).

Rettenmaier gently made effort to shove all his chips to the Frenchman and shook hands with the players at the table. No EPT title for the guitar playing German wonder boy in 2013. He surely will try to add one to his already impressive palmarès in 2014.

Von Kriegenbergh Eliminates Levi and Shorr

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Shorr Gone
Shorr Gone

There's a reason one of the tables gets chosen as the feature table and that's because there's one or more famous poker players on it in general. The table on the live stream just now was stacked with familiar faces. WPT winner Taylor Von Kriegenbergh, Bellagio Cup winner Shannon Shorr, long time French grinder Nicolas Levi and Partouche Poker Tour (amongst others) winner Ole Schemion are all household names for the diehard poker fan.

Two of them just got eliminated though. Von Kriegenbergh busted both Shorr and Levi in one big preflop all in. Von Kriegenbergh with {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} had both Shorr ({A-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}) and Levi ({A-Hearts}{10-Spades}) covered. The {4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{3-Clubs}{2-Clubs} board didn't improve anybody and Von Kriegenbergh was stacking chips for some time.

Fourth Pair Will Do

Level 13 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
David Williams
David Williams

Team PokerStars Pro David Williams opened under the gun to 4,400 and received calls from a player in middle position, Dmitri Holdeew in the hijack and both blinds. "I'll check blind" the small blind and big blind both announced, but Williams wasn't about to follow their lead. "I'm not" he said with a smile. "Is that a forced bet? asked Eureka Poker Tour winner Holdeew jokingly.

The dealer put {Q-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} on the table and action was directly on Williams. The American Team Pro made a 10,500 continuation bet and the first three players were easy to get rid of. Austrian Christian Golob in the big blind called however and check called another 21,700 when the {A-Spades} hit the turn. The river was the {6-Spades} and Golob checked for a third time. Williams thought about it, but eventually checked behind.

Golob showed his {10-Hearts}{8-Clubs} and you could just feel the rest of the table being curious as to what Williams had. They weren't going to find out though as he double checked his cards and threw them in the muck. Williams still has 216,000 left, Golob plays well over 300,000. "You're a brave man!" said the small blind admiring Golob's play.

Walid Bou Habib Leads as 189 Advance from Day 2; Defending Champ Falls

Level 14 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Walid Bou Habib
Walid Bou Habib

On Saturday, Season 10 European Poker Tour Prague Main Event continued with Day 2 action from the Hilton in the Czech Republic’s largest city. Nine late entries combined with the 389 players from Day 1a and 609 from Day 1b brought the total field to 1,007 players — a 17% increase from Season 9’s 864 players — which created a prize pool of €4,883.950 that will be paid to the top 151 finishers.

Day 2 began with 549 players returning to action, but after six 75-minute levels of play just 189 remained. The man best positioned to capture the €889,000 first-place prize is Walid Bou Habib, who finished as the Day 2 chip leader with 509,000. You may recall Habib, who hails from Lebanon, was runner-up in the EPT9 Deauville, which you can read about by clicking here.

Action resumed in Level 9 (400/800/100) and straight out of the gate players began to fall including Somar Al-Darwich, Toby Lewis, Micah Raskin, Oleksii Kovalchuk, and defending champ Ramzi Jelassi.

Jelassi actually fell in Level 10 (500/1,000/100) when Elfad Mammadov opened for 1,800 and was raised by the active Nikov Dobromir Georgiev to 5,200. Jelassi, who had folded to a river bet a few hands before to leave him with a stack of 14,100, then moved all in from the small blind. Mammadov tank-folded and then Georgiev made the call.

Georgiev: {5-Spades}{5-Hearts}
Jelassi: {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds}

The flop was dealt {q-Clubs}{k-Spades}{j-Clubs} and it appeared Jelassi was going to win the race, but the {5-Diamonds} turn gave Georgiev back the lead. The {9-Hearts} river missed Jelassi’s straight draw, and that meant there would be no repeat victory for the Swedish pro.

Before long Jelassi had company on the rail in the form of Bryn Kenney, Caicai Huang, Sergio Aido, Gaelle Baumann, Luca Pagano, Daniel Negreanu, and Martin Finger, who was the last former EPT champ standing.

There’s no doubt some big names fell on Day 2, but plenty of them made it through the night including Jonathan Little (471,100), Sebastian Saffari (428,000), Amir Lehavot (427,500), Kevin Iacofano (380,000), Ana Marquez (319,400), Max Silver (259,000), Ludovic Lacay (242,800), Ari Engel (240,300), and Darren Elias (224,100).

Day 3 will kick off at Noon local time on Sunday, and the money bubble ought to burst early on. Of course the PokerNews Live Reporting Team will be on hand to bring you all the latest and greatest from the largest EPT Prague in history!.

While you wait, check out this EPT10 Prague Hand Analysis with Jonathan Little:
