The World of Baranov

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Marcin Horecki
Marcin Horecki

Sergii Baranov featured a lot in our WSOPE coverage last year due to his colourful play and conversation at the table. Marcin Horecki just felt that force in a negative way.

There was a bunch of chips already in the middle making us believe the pot was three-bet before the {3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{k-Hearts} were fanned out in front of the players.

Baranov bet 2,250 at that juncture, 6,100 on the {4-Clubs} turn and emptied the clip with a 10,500 bet on the {4-Hearts} river. The Team PokerStars pro player called all the way and gave out a surprised sound when Baranov opened {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} for trips!

“What?” shouted Baranov. “Ha ha ha ha!” he continued in dark tones.

When the Cohen Gets Tough...

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
"I'm in the mood for dancing..."
"I'm in the mood for dancing..."

Lucien Cohen won this event two years ago beating Martin Jacobson and he's just managed to double up here.

Cohen had moved all in on the river of a {10-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{A-Spades}{6-Hearts}{4-Spades} board against Janos Nagygyorgy. Cohen, as befitting his nature, then proceeded to stand up and began dancing in the manner that could only be described as "Your dad at a wedding".

Cohen's dancing skills clearly seduced Nagygyorgy into making the call and Cohen flipped {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} for a flopped set before shouting out very loudly, "I am the best in the world! I am the best in the world!"

Cohen went back from the previous "feigning apprehension to induce a call dance" to a brand new "victory dance" - the latter he performed fairly quickly as it seemed as though the floor was heading over in an attempt to calm him down.

Cohen has 50,000.

Katchalov Crushed

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

Team PokerStars Pro Eugene Katchalov’s tournament has come to an abrupt end at the hands of Antonio Subtil.

Katchalov did not have the best of days and had been down to around 5,000 chips for the past level or so. This short-stack found itself in the middle of the felt after a brief preflop raising war with Subtil, Katchalov holding {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and Subtil the far stronger {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}.

The all-diamond {4-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} flop caused a few gasps from those seated next to Katchalov, but the gaspers soon realized Katchalov’s diamond outs were dead due to Subtil holding the {Q-Diamonds} in his hand. This meant Katchalov was drawing to one of the two remaining nines in the deck, the {2-Clubs} on the turn was not one of them, and neither was the {Q-Hearts} on the river. Katchalov is gone.

Yury Duty

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

Yury Gulyy has been working his stack up all day, and he's just added a few more following a four-way hand.

Jonathan Duhamel opened with a raise to 600 from early position, Yury Gulyy called from a seat over, and next-to-act Sebastien Comel called as well. It folded to Niclas Fjellstrom on the button who then reraised to 2,000, and after the blinds stepped aside all three of the others called.

The flop came a highly coordinated {10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{J-Clubs}, and all four players checked. The turn then brought the {K-Diamonds}. It checked to Comel who pushed out a bet of 2,500, and Fjellstrom called. Duhamel tossed away his hand, and after some thought Gulyy decided to call and stick around.

The river then brought the {J-Spades}, pairing the board, and Gulyy waited about a half-minute before plucking chips off of his stack to lead for 10,100. Comel folded quickly, and after pausing a beat Fjellstrom got out as well.

Czuczor Catches a King on the River

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

Marton Czuczor has started to climb up the chip counts, thanks in part to a pot he just won from Jonathan Beck.

It was Beck who opened the betting, setting the price to play at 625. The player to his direct left folded, but Czuczor three-bet to 1,500. This raise folded out the players who were yet to act, but Beck put in the extra chips to call.

Beck then checked to Czuczor on a {7-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop. Czuczor fired a continuation-bet into Beck and Beck called. The {8-Clubs} saw Beck check again and Czuczor checked behind.

The {K-Hearts} completed the board and Beck checked its arrival. Czuczor reached for chips immediately and bet 5,800 of them. Beck, who was sat with a segment of his hood covering his mouth, eventually called.

Czuczor: {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}
Beck: *muck*

Czuczor's pair of kings won him the pot.

Play Resumes

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante

The big board is showing that 307 players came out for today's first Day 1 flight, with a larger group expected for Monday's Day 1b. We've lost nearly 40 of those so far today during the first four 75-minute levels.

There will be two more levels, then a one-hour dinner break, then two final levels before Day 1a concludes.

Nagel Uses the Power of Position

Level 4 : 100/200, 25 ante

Yossef Ifergan opened to 450 from middle position and after one player folded Samuel Ducoin called. To his immediate left was John O'Shea and he called too. Mario Nagel took advantage of his seat on the button by raising to 2,300. Only O'Shea called.

The flop came down {9-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{2-Spades} and O'Shea checked to his opponent. Nagel, who finished sixth at EPT Campione in Season 8, bet 2,100 chips and O'Shea folded and flicked his cards into the muck.
