Mustapha Kanit Leads Final Eight in €25,750 High Roller

Level 19 : 30,000/60,000, 10,000 ante
Mustapha Kanit

Eight players will return for the final table of the 2016 PokerStars European Poker Tour Dublin €25,750 High Roller, each assured of €65,170 and all with a chance of the €501,640 awaiting first place.

It's a star-studded final table, with former EPT Monte Carlo High Roller champion Charlie Carrel (2,755,000), 2016 Aussie Millions $25,000 Challenge champion Chance Kornuth (1,310,000), qualifiers Anton Bertilsson (3,850,000) and Keith "The Silver Pigeon" Johnson (1,155,000), and high-rolling regulars Nick Petrangelo (570,000), Jeff Rossiter (1,120,000), and Ivan Luca (1,265,000) still in the hunt.

However, they are all chasing the heels of chip leader Mustapha Kanit, who has a staggering 5,460,000 in chips going into the final table.

Kanit started the day as one of the short stacks with just 151,000, but soon vaulted through the chip counts thanks to first cracking the kings of Sam Chartier before getting into a big pot with the Day 1 chip leader, Bertilsson.

Bertilsson raised to 60,000 from the hijack seat to start the action. On the button, Luca made the call before action got to the player in the big blind, Kanit. The Italian high roller squeezed to 215,000 with 1,324,000 behind. Bertilsson thought about it for just a bit before shoving all in for almost 1,900,000. Luca folded, and Kanit made the call. Bertilsson tabled the {8-Spades}{8-Hearts} and Kanit showed the {q-Diamonds}{q-Spades}. The board ran out {k-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and Bertilsson handed over a large portion of his chips to Kanit, in what was at that stage the largest pot of the tournament.

After that hand, Bertilsson was down to just a couple of big blinds, but he made an impressive recovery, ending the day second in chips.

As play approached the bubble, the quality of the players was nothing short of exceptional. But, not everyone could make the money. The likes of Davidi Kitai, Sam Chartier, Timothy Adams, and Christoph Vogelsang were all eliminated without cashing.

With 10 players left and nine places paid, the bubble had arrived. In what was a relatively short bubble, Dario Sammartino exited in 10th place after his two pair was cracked by a rivered gutshot for Bertilsson. While Sammartino departed with hanging shoulders, the nine remaining players were redrawn to the unofficial final table, all assured of cashing for at least €49,730.

There was just enough time for Martin Jacobson to bust. He shoved his last couple of big blinds in with {A-}{2-}, but got called by Luca with {A-}{Q-}. No deuce on the flop, turn, or river, and Jacobson made his exit in ninth.

With that, play was halted with 55:53 left on the clock in Level 19 (30,000/60,000/10,000), and the final eight players are seated as followed:

Sunday isn't just time for the final table of the €25,750 High Roller, either, as the €5,300 Main Event also starts. PokerNews will be on hand for that as well, so expect updates all day long from both events.

In the meantime, check out a short interview Sasha Salinger did with Kanit on the dinner break today:

Action folded to Martin Jacobson in the hijack and he shoved all in for his last 480,000.

The cutoff, button and small blind all folded, but Ivan Luca in the big blind didn't hesitate too long before calling.

Martin Jacobson: {A-Clubs}{2-Hearts}
Ivan Luca: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}

The board ran out {K-Spades}{7-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{A-Hearts}{9-Clubs} and Jacobson made his exit in 9th place, good for €49,730.

Play has stopped for the day, the remaining 8 players return tomorrow at 12:30 for the final table, with 55:52 left on the clock. All are guaranteed €65,170 at this stage.

Action folded to Anton Bertilsson on the button and he raised to 100,000. Both Ivan Luca in the small blind as Dario Sammartino in the big blind called and the three took a flop of {7-Clubs}{2-Spades}{9-Diamonds}.

Ivan Luca lead out for 130,000 and Sammartino made the call. Bertilsson followed suit and called as well.

The {A-Spades} hit the turn and Luca checked. Sammartino did the same and Bertilsson now made a bet of 325,000. Luca got out of the way but Sammartino shoved all in for 900,000 exactly. Bertilsson tanked for quite a bit before making the call.

Dario Sammartino: {A-Clubs}{7-Spades}
Anton Bertilsson: {8-Spades}{J-Spades}

Sammartino needed to avoid tens and spades to double up and stay alive, but failed to do so as the {10-Hearts} spiked the river.

Sammartino left with hanging shoulders, the remaining 9 players are guaranteed €49,730 from here on out.

Chartier Busts

Level 18 : 25,000/50,000, 5,000 ante
Sam Chartier
Sam Chartier

Sam Chartier moved all in for 115,000 from the button and Jeff Rossiter isolated from one seat over by moving all in as well.

Chartier: {Q-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}
Rossiter: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}

The board ran out {J-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{2-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{10-Spades} and Chartier doubled up to around six big blinds before shoving from the cutoff again the next hand. Ivan Luca looked him up out of the big blind and the Canadian was in trouble again.

Chartier: {10-Spades}{8-Spades}
Luca: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}

This time Chartier didn't find enough help on a board of {8-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{6-Hearts}{6-Clubs} and the field had been reduced to the final 10.

Kim Wittendorff Eliminated

Level 17 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante
Kim Wittendorff
Kim Wittendorff

The tournament was stuck on 14 players for quite some time, but just now three players busted in rapid fashion. Kim Wittendorff was the latest casualty.

Under the gun Kim Wittendorff raised and action folded to Anton Bertilsson in the big blind. Bertilsson clashed in a big pot with Mustapha Kanit not too long ago, but by now was recovered to the point where he had Wittendorff covered again. Bertilsson shoved all in and Wittendorff snap called.

Kim Wittendorff: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Anton Bertilsson: {K-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}

Wittendorff had the dominating ace-king, but would end up short. The board ran out {Q-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{K-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and the Dane made his exit while Bertilsson was back to the point he was at before clashing with Kanit.

Davidi Kitai: {J-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}
Nick Petrangelo: {A-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}

The board ran out {A-Hearts}{8-Hearts}{5-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} and Kitai made his exit.

Timothy Adams Eliminated

Level 16 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Timothy Adams
Timothy Adams

Ivan Luca limped under the gun and right next to him Timothy Adams shoved all in for 381,000. Action folded to Anton Bertilsson in the small blind and he called all in for 338,000. The big blind and Luca both folded.

Timothy Adams: {K-Hearts}{K-Diamonds}
Anton Bertilsson: {A-Spades}{J-Hearts}

Adams was in good position to double up, but the community cards resulted in a different outcome: {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}{3-Spades}{Q-Clubs}{4-Spades}.

Adams was left with 43,000 and moved in under the gun the next hand. His neighbor Mustapha Kanit raised to 70,000 total and big blind Ivan Luca made the call. Luca then check folded to Kanit's 70,000 continuation bet on {Q-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts} and the small side pot was already Kanit's.

Mustapha Kanit: {K-Hearts}{J-Hearts}
Timothy Adams: {A-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}

After the {8-Hearts} hit the turn, Adams was already drawing dead and he gathered his belongings. The {4-Clubs} on the river was a blank and Adams made his exit in 15th place.

Kanit and Bertilsson Play the Biggest Pot of the Tournament

Level 16 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Mustapha Kanit
Mustapha Kanit

With the blinds having just gone up, Anton Bertilsson in the hijack made it 60,000 to go. On the button, Ivan Luca made the call before action got to big blind Mustapha Kanit. The Italian high roller squeezed to 215,000 with 1,324,000 behind.

Bertilsson thought about it for just a bit before shoving all in for almost 1.9 million. Luca didn't need much time making up his mind and folded just about right away. Kanit needed some more time though and sighed long and hard.

He eventually tossed in some 1,000 chips to call, though he wasn't overly excited doing so. When he saw the showdown, that all changed:

Mustapha Kanit: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Anton Bertilsson: {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}

The board ran out {K-Clubs}{9-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} and Bertilsson parted ways with a lot of chips. Kanit, still with a straight face, counted out his 1,539,000 stack and raked in the biggest pot of the tournament.

Vogelsang Gone

Christoph Vogelsang
Christoph Vogelsang

Shortly after the redraw Anton Bertilsson raised to 48,000 from the cutoff and Christoph Vogelsang raised all-in from the button for his last 482,000. Bertilsson made the call

Bertilsson: {a-Hearts}{10-Spades}
Vogelsang: {j-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}

Vogelsang was in need of help but the {9-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{q-Spades}{2-Spades}{6-Hearts} gave him nothing and he was eliminated. Bertilsson is now approaching Keith Johnson with a stack of over two million
