Qualifier Anton Bertilsson Leads Biggest Buy-In Ever Held On Irish Soil

Anton Bertilsson ends the day as chip leader with 1,375,000

For the first four seasons of the European Poker Tour, a stop in Dublin was a fixture on the schedule. The tour didn't return in Season 5 and stayed absent from the program for several years, but it has returned with a bang this week for Season 12.

To kick things off, the biggest buy-in tournament ever held on Irish soil took place. Things started out a bit slow, but in the end 56 players ponied up the €25,750 buy-in. With 10 reentries generated, the total field size was bumped up to 66.

Live qualifier Anton Bertilsson from Sweden would end the day as chip leader. He amassed his chips winning pots against the likes of Andre Akkari, Martin Jacobson, and Chance Kornuth, before busting Joao Simao in a big confrontation with aces against kings. He bagged up a large 1.375 million in chips and found himself well out in front of Nick Petrangelo's second-place stack of 888,000.

Joao Vieira was the first to bust. The Portuguese pro ran queens into Dario Sammartino's backdoor trips with ace-four and headed to the registration desk to buy back in.

Kyle Frey followed Vieira out the door. He was short already when he got his last money in and called it off with ace-king. He was in good shape against the five-three suited of Jean-Noel Thorel, but the three in the window resulted in him heading to the exit.

Steve O'Dwyer has been running hot, but we'll see if the cool down has finally begun after a slow start in Dublin. Today he ran jacks into Jeff Rossiter's aces and busted with an ace appearing on the flop. He didn't fare much better on his second bullet, either, running ace-king into tens to bust for the final table.

One of the most remarkable hands of the day happened just before the last level started. Kevin MacPhee kicked of the action with a raise under the gun and his neighbor, Winfred Yu, made the call. In the cutoff seat, Charlie Carrel called, and then Pratyush Buddiga squeezed from the big blind. MacPhee folded, but Yu made the call again. Carrel then back-raised all in for heaps and Buddiga folded. Yu called, and it was jacks for Yu and ace-king for Carrel. A king on the river favored Carrel and the EPT Grand Final High Roller champion doubled up. Wheeler, with his jaw just about on the ground even before the showdown had happened, described the hand as "incredible."

The 41 players that survived the eight levels of play return at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Registration is open till the start of the day, so the total amount of entries and prize pool might just grow a little bit more. The players buying in now will receive a crisp 250,000 starting stack, good for almost 42 big blinds at the start of play.

PokerNews will return with live coverage, and chip counts of all the players can be found below. In the meantime, check out Sasha Salinger "calling the clock" on 2015 World Series of Poker Main Event champion Martin Jacobson:

Mustapha Kanit Jams With 10-6 Off Suit, Does Not Get There

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Mustapha Kanit
Mustapha Kanit

The cutoff raised to 10,000 and Davidi Kitai on the button three-bet to 25,500. The small blind folded but Mustapha Kanit in the big blind had bigger plans. He cold four-bet to 72,000 and the initial raiser folded.

Davidi Kitai tanked for a bit before five-betting to 120,000 with about 270,000 behind.

Kanit tanked for a fair bit before shoving all in. Kitai snap called for 391,500 total and Kanit's face turned sour.

Mustapha Kanit: {10-Clubs}{6-Spades}
Davidi Kitai: {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out an uneventful {A-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{10-Hearts} and Kitai doubled up.

Carrel Doubles in "Incredible Hand"

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Winfred Yu
Winfred Yu

"This hand is incredible" whispered Jason Wheeler who had gotten up from the table while the confrontation between Yu and Carrel was still in progress. Here's what Wheeler told us had happened.

Kevin MacPhee raised to 9,000 under the gun and Winfred Yu right next to him made the call. Charlie Carrel over called from the cutoff before Pratyush Buddiga squeezed to 35,000 from the big blind. The suqeeze was reason enough for MacPhee to fold but Yu made the call once more.

Action was now on Carrel in the cutoff and he shoved for 272,000 total. Buddiga mucked his cards but Yu wasn't willing to do the same just yet. The player from Hong Kong tanked for a bit before he called.

Charlie Carrel: {A-Spades}{K-Hearts}
Winfred Yu: {J-Diamonds}{J-Hearts}

The board ran out {8-Spades}{8-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Hearts}{K-Diamonds} and Carrel doubled up, leaving Yu with just around 180,000.

Bertilsson Busts Simao In Monster Pot

Level 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Anton Bertilsson
Anton Bertilsson

Kevin MacPhee raised to 9,000 under the gun and Anton Bertilsson three-bet to 25,000 from the cutoff. Joao Simao in the small blind cold four-bet to 75,000 and the big blind and MacPhee both folded. Bertilsson shoved all in and Simao made the call.

Joao Simao: {K-Hearts}{K-Spades}
Anton Bertilsson: {A-Clubs}{A-Hearts}

The flop came {A-Spades}{4-Spades}{6-Diamonds} leaving Simao drawing slim. It was all over on the {J-Clubs} turn, the {K-Clubs} on the river couldn't save him anymore.

While Simao made his exit, Bertilsson is the first player over a million.

O'Dwyer Eliminated by Rossiter

Level 6 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Steve O'Dwyer
Steve O'Dwyer

Rocco Palumbo raised to 8,000 under the gun and was raised in the seat next to him to 22,000 by Jeff Rossiter. It folded round to Steve O'Dwyer on the button who moved all in for his remaining 110,000 chips. Palumbo folded and Rossiter made a quick call.

Rossiter: {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}
O'Dwyer: {J-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}

The board ran out {a-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{k-Spades}{6-Clubs} and O'Dwyer headed to the exit wrapped in a jacket and hat to fight off the cold. We may still see him back in the High Roller field, with rebuys open until 12.15 p.m. tomorrow

Kornuth's Bluff Fails; Busts

Level 6 : 1,500/3,000, 400 ante
Chance Kornuth
Chance Kornuth

A huge pot of 170,000 chips had emerged with the board reading {K-Hearts}{6-Spades}{5-Hearts}{3-Spades}{4-Diamonds} and Chance Kornuth moved all in for around 160,000 chips. David Peters was covered by a few big blinds and eventually made the call to see Kornuth flash over {J-Spades}{10-Spades} for a busted flush draw while Peters scooped the pot with the {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs}.

According to Peters, he three-bet preflop from the button and Kornuth called in the cutoff to check-raise the flop and bet the turn before getting it in. Peters doubled for 155,700 and Kornuth called all in for his last 5,600 the next hand after a raise by Ben Heath. Luuk Gieles and Mohsin Charania both called as well to set up a four-way flop of {Q-Diamonds}{10-Spades}{7-Spades}.

Gieles bet 8,600 and Charania called but both got out of the way once Heath raised to 33,400.

Kornuth: {A-Clubs}{6-Diamonds}
Heath: {K-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}

Both the {4-Hearts} turn and {J-Spades} river blanked and Kornuth left the tournament area, not before saying "nice hand" to Heath though.

Andrew Lichtenberger Next One to Go

Level 5 : 1,200/2,400, 300 ante
Andrew Lichtenberger
Andrew Lichtenberger

We missed what happened, but Jason Mercier was kind enough to fill us in after Andrew Lichtenberger had already exited the tournament area.

"Yeah, really weird hand" Anthony Zinno commented with a smile.

Mercier, without any jokes, told us he opened the button to 5,200. Andrew Lichtenberger shoved for 47,000 from the big blind and Mercier called. Lichtenberger had {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds} while Mercier had {A-}{K-} off. The board ran out {K-}{Q-}{6-}{10-}{K-} and Lichtenberger was the second player to bust out.

"Be sure to add that Jason fist pumped" Timothy Adams commented with an even bigger smile.

"I didn't" Mercier replied, as the table was waiting for a new player before play continued. Max Silver eventually came over to take Lichtenberger's former seat. "LuckyChewy" reentered right away, and has a crisp 250,000 stack to work with again.

Max Silver
Max Silver

Max Silver, who is currently playing in the High Roller Event, has released an app with the name Snap Shove to help other players with short-stacked play. You can read the news article about it by clicking here. Whether or not he will have to put this specific knowledge at use in this tournament remains to be seen, and the PokerNews live reporting team will be following his progress.

Vieira Becomes First Casualty

Level 4 : 1,000/2,000, 300 ante
Joao Vieira studies Dario Sammartino
Joao Vieira studies Dario Sammartino

The last hand started about four minutes before the end of the level, but Joao Vieira tanked for five minutes and long into the break before he sent his stack over to Dario Sammartino.

Vieira, who was down to 50,000 when the hand started, had raised from the small blind and Sammartino called. On the {8-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop, Vieira continued for 6,800 and was called before he made it 10,200 to go on the {4-Diamonds} turn. Sammartino tossed in the chips for the call before the Portuguese player checked the {4-Clubs} river. Sammartino put him all in for around 30,000, and Vieira ended up calling with the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} after a long tank. Unfortunately for him, he only saw his tournament life end, as Sammartino made runner-runner trips with the {A-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}.

Despite the bust, a second entry is possible until the start of Day 2 for Vieira, so we may see him enter the competition again.

Welcome to the First €25,750 High Roller in Dublin!

It's been a while since the European Poker Tour last visited the Irish capital of Dublin. The stop was a fixture on the schedule for the first four seasons, but has been missing ever since. Now it's back, and it's promising to be a big one. The UKIPT, that preceded the action here, has seen massive fields, and we expect nothing less for the EPT.

PokerNews kicks off its coverage of the 2016 PokerStars EPT Season 12 stop in Dublin with the €25,750 High Roller. Back in Season 4, when Reuben Peters won the Main Event for €532,620, there was no high roller event, making this is a first.

The tournament starts 12:30 p.m. local time.

Players will start with a stack of 250,000 and blinds of 500/1,000/100 for the first 60-minute level. The entire structure can be viewed here, and a total of eight levels are on the schedule for today, finishing the day around 9:30 p.m. local time. This is a single reentry event, and registration will be open till the start of Day 2.
