Ireland's Patrick Clarke Leads Final 16 Into Day 5 of EPT Dublin Main Event

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Patrick Clarke

Day 4 of the 2016 PokerStars European Poker Tour Dublin €5,300 Main Event was nothing less than an Emerald Isle massacre, as the field was cut down from 45 to 16 within three 90-minute levels.

The competitors played a fourth level, but no one else went broke and the final 16 will return to the Royal Dublin Society on Friday at 12 p.m. local time to play for seats in the six-handed final.

Among those who were on the wrong end of the early bloodletting were PokerStars Team Online's Jaime Staples, Team PokerStars Pro Luca Pagano, former World Series of Poker November Niners Pierre Neuville, James Akenhead, and Antoine Saout, and EPT main event winners Dominik Panka and Anton Wigg.

Headlining the final 16 are two of the most successful players over the past couple of EPT seasons, as EPT Season 11 Malta €25,000 High Roller and two-time time EPT Super High Roller runner-up Dzmitry Urbanovich joins EPT Season 11 Grand Final and 2013 WSOP Europe Main Event champion Adrian Mateos in the group.

However, it's an Irishman who sat on the top of the chip counts when the day ended, with 2014 Irish Open champion Patrick Clarke leading the charge into Day 5. Clarke got a huge chunk of chips just as play wrapped up, scooping a more-than-one-million-chip pot after making a flush on the river versus Canadian Christopher Kruk.

A solid day from German Gilles Bernies will see him return within a couple blinds off Clarke, and Greek player Iliodoros Kamatakis and Urbanovich are within striking distance as well.

The United Kingdom will bring the largest contingent into the event's penultimate day with Rhys Jones, Alex Goulder, Tomas MacNamara, and Frank Williams all making it through, although they all sit in the bottom eight with the exception of Jones.

Play will resume with blind levels at 12,000/24,000 with a 3,000 ante. They will redraw again once the nine-handed unofficial final table is reached, and although EPT final tables are eight-handed, they will play down to the final six on Friday before bagging up and coming back to play down to a winner on Saturday.

The PokerNews Live Reporting team will be on hand from start to finish Friday, so tune in then to watch this group contest for the EPT Season 12 Dublin Main Event title and the €561,900 first-place prize that comes along with it.

Don't forget that you can also follow coverage of the €10,300 High Roller on PokerNews as well.

Goulder Hits the Case Queen to Send Goulet-Ratelle Packing

Level 22 : 8,000/16,000, 2,000 ante
Jean-Philippe Goulet-Ratelle
Jean-Philippe Goulet-Ratelle

Under the gun, Jean-Philippe Goulet-Ratelle made it 35,000 to go. Alex Goulder on the button three-bet to 100,000 and both blinds released. Goulet-Ratelle shoved all in for approximately 400,000 and Goulder instantly called.

Jean-Philippe Goulet-Ratelle: {Q-Clubs}{Q-Diamonds}
Alex Goulder: {A-Clubs}{Q-Hearts}

The flop came {A-Spades}{9-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}, leaving Goulder just the last queen as an out. The {7-Diamonds} on the turn was of no importance but the {Q-Spades} on the river sure was. Goulder made his set on the river and Goulet-Ratelle's top two hit the muck soon enough.

Sidhu Knocks Out Wigg and Michalak on the Feature Table

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Anton Wigg
Anton Wigg

Anton Wigg with the {A-Hearts}{J-Clubs} and Kuljinder Sidhu with the {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds} got it in before the flop on the feature table. The {A-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} flop was good for Wigg, but the {7-Clubs} on the turn meant it was all over already for the former EPT Copenhagen champion. The {Q-Clubs} on the river didn't change a thing and Wigg made his exit.

Not much later, Kuljinder Sidhu was right back at it. From first position he raised to 24,000 and Jakub Michalak in the hijack three-bet to 54,000. Sidhu maden the call and both players checked on {9-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}. Sidhu then bet 64,000 on the {7-Hearts} turn and Michalak made the call.

Michalak had 189,000 left by the time the {3-Hearts} completed the board and that was exactly what he had to wager if he wanted to call, as Sidhu moved all in. Michalak thought about it for a fair bit before he called it off with the {K-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}. Sidhu showed {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades} and took out his second player in a matter of minutes.

Goulder Leads Last 45 on Day 4 of the Main Event

Alex Goulder
Alex Goulder

Just 45 players remain in the 2016 PokerStars EPT Season 12 Dublin Main Event and it's British pro Alex Goulder in the lead. The WPT National champion is the only player with a stack of over a million, his closest competitor is Frank Williams who bagged 881,000 last night.

The first level to be played is 5,000/10,000 with a 1,000 ante. Adrian Allain, the short stack going into the day today, starts with just 8 big blinds. PCA champion Dominik Panka is to starts with 9 big blinds and will be looking for a double up sooner rather than later.

Day 4 starts at noon (in about an hour) and the goal is to play down to 16, or till the end of level 24, whichever comes first. Levels will again be 90 minutes long, with a 20-minute break after each level. There won't be a dinner break for the players, play should halt around 8:45 pm.

There will be plenty of action in the Main Event today, of that one can be sure, but there will be another big tournament going on at the same time. At 12:30 the €10,200 3-day High Roller starts, and PokerNews.com will be on sight for coverage of that event as well. So sit back, fire up the stream, and get your F5 finger ready to refresh our live coverage pages as many times as you like.
