Welcome to Day 3 of the PokerStars.com EPT13 Malta €5,300 Main Event

Chip leader Guillaume Diaz on Day 2
Chip leader Guillaume Diaz on Day 2

Day 3 of the PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Malta Main Event is here and only 90 players are still in the hunt for the title and a first prize of €355,700. In fact, the field will be just a few eliminations from the bubble when play resumes at Casino Portomaso.

The bubble nearly burst on Day 2, but play concluded with 90 players left and plans to pay only 87 of them.

Start-of-the-day chip leader Guillaume Diaz likely won’t fear the bubble, but several others will be desperately trying to book at least the €8,070 min-cash in this penultimate Main Event on the EPT.

Diaz bagged up 583,500 chips yesterday and the Frenchman is leading the field by a decent margin over Gianfranco Visalli (518,000) and Peter Ockenden (469,500). Plus, there are several big names left in the field, including five former EPT champions.

Dominik Panka, who won the PCA in season 10, is the one with the most chips. He’s fifth on the leader board with 385,000. Davidi Kitai (284,500), Frederik Jensen (191,500) and Roberto Romanello (82,000) are also still in with a shot at winning their second EPT crown. Jean Montury (85,000) can even win this exact same event for the second time. He was the EPT Malta champion in season 11.

There are still plenty of other notables in the field as well, including Sarah Herzali (362,000), Eugene Katchalov (284,00), Dan Shak (203,000), James Akenhead (176,000), Stephen Chidwick (100,500), Ole Schemion (86,000) and Maria Ho (40,500).

They’re all set to play five 90-minute levels today. They will start at level 15 with the blinds at 2,000/4,000 with a 500-chip ante.

Play begins at 12 p.m. local time in Malta and the PokerNews live reporting team will bring you all the action as it happens. It’s going be a day packed with action so be sure to tune in.

Huge River Bluff by Treccarichi

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante
Walter Treccarichi
Walter Treccarichi

Walter Treccarichi is using the bubble play to his advantage. He just threw in a huge bluff on the river and got it through.

There was around 50,000 in the middle and the board read {8-Hearts}{6-Clubs}{A-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}. From the big blind, Stephen Chidwick checked to Treccarichi. The Italian slid out a bet of 26,500 and after some heavy thinking, Chidwick made the call.

The river was the {Q-Diamonds} and Chidwick checked again. Treccarichi pushed out a big pile of blue 5,000-chips, enough to put Chidwick all in.

The Brit thought about it for more than five minutes but eventually folded his hand. Treccarichi tabled {10-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} for a complete bluff and that gained him a nice pot.

Philipps Bubbles EPT Malta Main Event

After his earlier double up, Benjamin Philipps was blinded down to just 5,500 in chips.

He then had to post the big blind and was left with only a single 500-chip behind. From first position, Tomas Macnamara, who doubled him in the previous hand, raised to 10,000. It was folded to Philipps and he started waiting for all the other tables to finish their hand.

There were no other all-in-situations, so Philipps was at risk of becoming the bubble boy when he threw in his final chip. The camera crews rushed to the table and he showed his {Q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}.

Macnamara was ahead with the {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}.

The board ran out an uneventful {10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{J-Spades}.

In the end, it didn't really matter and Philipps was on his way out empty handed while all the others in the room secured a pay-day of at least €8,070.

Roberto Romanello open-shoved the small blind for more than 20 big blinds and Stefano Terziani called from one seat over to put the Welshman at risk of elimination.

Roberto Romanello: {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts}
Stefano Terziani: {A-Clubs}{K-Spades}

The board came {8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and the kicker played a crucial role to eliminate Romanello.

Dan Shak raised to 12,500 from under the gun and Aleksandar Spadijer three-bet all in for 43,500 from the cutoff. Nicolino Di Carlo four-bet all in for 161,500 from the button and Shak asked for a count. He then called and Di Carlo immediately asked whether the American had pocket tens.

Aleksandar Spadijer: {A-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}
Nicolino Di Carlo: {A-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}
Dan Shak: {10-Spades}{10-Clubs}

Pocket Eights Cause Trouble

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Ole Schemion still in
Ole Schemion still in

Hand 1

Alexander Debus raised to 11,000 from the button and Walter Treccarichi three-bet to 32,500 from the small blind. Alessandro Longobardi four-bet all in for 42,500 from the big blind and Debus as well as Treccarichi called.

On the {K-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds} flop, both players checked. Debus bet the {3-Clubs} turn for 32,000 and Treccarichi folded.

Alessandro Longobardi: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Alexander Debus: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

The {K-Clubs} on the river was a blank and Longobardi busted.

Hand 2

At the very same table and one hand later, Debus raised to 11,000 and Ole Schemion in the blinds three-bet to 100,000 with little chips behind. Debus shoved and Schemion called all in for 119,000.

Ole Schemion: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Alexander Debus: {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{J-Spades} and again the eights prevailed.

Hand 3

At almost the same time and one table over, Marko Popovic was at risk with the {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and Davidi Kitai from one seat over had pocket queens. The board came {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and Popovic rivered a flush to stay in.

Sick Call Crushes Visalli's Hopes, Out Shortly After

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Gianfranco Visalli
Gianfranco Visalli

In a massive clash between Gianfranco Visalli and Frederik Jensen, the latter came out as the winner after spending nearly ten minutes in the tank.

Preflop, Visalli opened to 13,000 from under the gun. Behind him, Jensen reraised and made it 42,000. The Italian made the call, and the two of them saw an innocuous flop of {5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts} appear. Visalli checked, Jensen followed up with a bet of 28,000, Visalli check-raised to 68,000 and Jensen called.

After the dealer burned and turned the {8-Clubs}, Visalli wasted no time putting Jensen to the test, and put him all in for 156,000 in a pot of close to 200,000. Jensen thought long and hard, and the clock was eventually called on the Dane.

With just seven seconds left, Jensen slammed a tower of chips into the middle and turned over {8-Spades}{6-Spades}, much to Visalli's disbelief.

"Sick call", muttered Visalli as he turned over {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, looking for one of the only two remaining sevens on the river.

It wasn't. The dealer put out the {3-Clubs}, and Frederik Jensen surged to the top of the standings with more than half a million chips.

Just two hands later, Gianfranco Visalli's remaining chips disappeared as well. Visalli got it in holding {Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs} on a flop of {J-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{7-Clubs}, but needed help against Xixiang Luo's {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}. No help was found, as the board ran out {4-Diamonds}{A-Spades},

Visalli, who topped the leaderboard for nearly two days, is gone just like that in 47th place.

No Second EPT Malta Title for Montury

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Jean Montury
Jean Montury

EPT11 Malta champion Jean Montury just busted from this years Main Event. For most of the day he was riding the short stack but managed to grind his way up from time to time.

That grind came to an end when he busted to the hands of Aliaksei Boika.

It was Guillaume Valle that opened the pot with a raise to 15,000 and Bastian Dohler called. Montury shove all in for 64,000 and it was Boika who made a four-bet to 115,000. Everybody got out of the way and the cards were tabled.

Jean Montury: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Aliaksei Boika: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

Montury was in big trouble against Boika's queens and needed an ace or another escape route.

The {8-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} flop wasn't any help for the former champion and when the {8-Spades} hit on the turn he was down to the aces as outs.

The river wasn't an ace, it was the {7-Hearts} and Montury was sent packing.

Ortynskiy Triples Up; Staszko Busted

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Martin Staszko
Martin Staszko

It was folded all the way to Martin Staszko on the cutoff. He moved all in for 93,000 in total on the button, Xixiang Luo asked for a count.

He threw in the calling chips and Mats Karlsson folded his small blind. From the big blind, Viatcheslav Ortynskiy called all in for slightly less than Staszko, 89,000 in total.

Martin Staszko: {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Xixiang Luo: {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Viatcheslav Ortynskiy: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}

Ortynskiy dominated both of his opponents and was looking to triple up. The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} and he was back in the hunt for the title.

Luo took another hit, while Staszko was left with only 4,000 behind.

In the next hand, the former November Niner went all in and on the button, Mats Karlsson raised to 16,000. The blind got out of the way and cards were tabled.

It was {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for Staszko against Karlsson's {10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. The flop was {K-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. Karlsson made a pair of sevens, but Staszko had a straight draw.

Neither the {Q-Diamonds} turn or the {2-Spades} river completed that draw and Staszko was eliminated from the tournament.

From first position, Eugene Katchalov raised all in for 67,000 and everybody got out of the way besides Dmitry Yurasov.

The chip leader quickly called and the cards were opened.

Eugene Katchalov: {Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Dmitry Yurasov: {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Katchalov needed to hit to survive but he couldn't connect to the {3-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Spades} board.
