Macnamara Leads Last 30 Players After Day 3 - Kitai, Jensen and Panka in Contention

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Tomas Macnamara

Day 3 of the 2016 PokerStars.com EPT Malta Main Event saw a field of 90 get diminished to just 30 hopefuls. All the remaining players are guaranteed a share of €15,540 out of the total prize pool of €2,269,800, but have their sights set on the massive payday of €355,700, which will be handed out this Saturday in Casino Portomaso.

Five levels of 90-minutes were scheduled to be played, but only four of them were needed to get down to 30, and it was decided to move the last level of the day to Day 4. It was Britain's Tomas Macnamara who bagged the overall chiplead. Macnamara was the only player to bag more than a million in chips, and will return tomorrow with 1,028,000 to play with. Dmitry Yurasov (844,000), Sarah Herzali (769,000), Aliaksei Boika (688,000) and Benjamin Pollak (665,000) rounded out a star-studded top five.

Macnamara's previous best result on the EPT was a 13th place at the EPT12 Dublin Main Event for a payday of €32,870. The Brit chipped up a lot during the first level of the day while the bubble had not burst yet, and continued to build his stack throughout the next levels. Among others, he sent Yung Hwang to the rail with pocket tens versus pocket fives.

Three former EPT champions are still in contention for a second title: EPT8 Berlin champion Davidi Kitai (627,000), EPT8 Madrid winner Frederik Jensen (481,000) as well as PCA 2014 champion Dominik Panka (368,000) made it through to Day 4. Panka already reached the final table of the IPT8 Malta Main Event at the Casino Portomaso a few days ago. Further notables that will return to the tables include German poker prodigy Ole Schemion (613,000), start-of-the-day chip leader Guillaume Diaz (560,000), Malta's Konrad Abela (367,000), Walter Treccarichi (182,000) and IPT8 Malta Main Event champion Ismael Bojang (147,000).

Day 3 of the EPT Malta Main Event started off near the bubble, as three poor souls needed to be shed before the money was reached. The first to go was Jerry Odeen, who's pocket kings got cracked by Mikita Badziakouski's ace-seven when the latter flopped an ace. Alain Fluri ran ace-queen drawing dead in Yurasov's nut flush and left with nothing as well.

The dubious honor of bubble boy went to Benjamin Philipps, who attempted to squeeze into the money with a severe short stack. Eventually, Philipps was basically forced in from the big blind with queen-deuce, which was no match for Tomas Macnamara's pocket sevens. The remaining 87 players were all guaranteed at least €8,070.

Right after the bubble had burst, a flurry of short stacks got eliminated from the tournament. American superstar Maria Ho, EPT 7 Prague winner Roberto Romanello, €10,300 High Roller winner Dietrich Fast, Dutch demolishers Paul Gresel and Kees van Brugge, former November Niner James Akenhead and Nicaraguan hopeful Armando Collado Lanuza all fell in the early stages.

Gianfranco Visalli saw his run in the Main Event come to a screeching halt after losing most of his chips to Frederik Jensen. Visalli, who topped the leaderboard throughout the tournament, moved in with pocket sevens on an eight-high board. Jensen, holding just eight-six, called it off and took most of Visalli's chips in the process.

Two hands later, Visalli got the rest of his stack in with queen-six of clubs on a board containing a queen and two clubs. Xixiang Luo held ace-queen and dodged Visalli's outs to send the Italian packing in 47th place.

Jean Montury, who won the EPT 11 Malta Main Event back in March last year, saw his dreams of winning a second title come to an end. The Frenchman moved in with ace-queen, but needed to hit versus Aliaksei Boika's pocket queens. The board failed to provide help for Montury, and together with Niall Farrell's bust on Day 1 a new winner will be crowned on Saturday.

The second to last bustout of the day was Miguel Riera Suarez, who tried to hit a pay jump with his short stack. Riera stalled multiple times, but his tablemates and floor staff quickly acted to halt Riera's antics. When Riera had all but 5,000 of his stack in the middle, the Spaniard immediately got the clock called on him and had just thirty seconds to act. Riera was forced to commit the rest of his chips with queen-jack suited earlier that he'd liked, and failed to improve versus Armin Mette's ace-queen, missing out on the pay jump.

American hedge fund manager Dan Shak was the last to go. Shak shoved 130,000 with the optional nine-trey suited and Yury Gulyy called with ace-king suited.

"It is my son's birthday on Friday, I am actually rooting for you," said Shak, who could book his plane ticket home after Gulyy's hand held up. With Shak gone, 30 players remain after three days of play.

Day 4 will restart at 12 p.m. local time with blinds of 5,000 / 10,000 and an ante of 1,000. Five levels of 90 minutes have been scheduled, but with three days still to play a level will probably get cut. Follow all the action live on PokerNews.com throughout the day.

Viatcheslav Ortynskiy
Viatcheslav Ortynskiy

Bastian Dohler raised to 20,000 and Zoltan Szabo shoved his short stack for 76,000 on the button. Viatcheslav Ortynskiy, who had just arrived at the table and won a bracelet at the 2016 WSOP this summer, just cold-called. Dohler then announced all in and Ortysnkiy snap-called.

Zoltan Szabo: {A-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}
Viatcheslav Ortynskiy: {K-Diamonds}{K-Spades}
Bastian Dohler: {J-Spades}{J-Clubs}

The board ran out {J-Diamonds}{10-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{A-Hearts}{4-Hearts} and the stacks were counted, Dohler had 246,000 and the Russian less to also join the rail.

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Eugene Katchalov
Eugene Katchalov

From first position, Eugene Katchalov raised all in for 67,000 and everybody got out of the way besides Dmitry Yurasov.

The chip leader quickly called and the cards were opened.

Eugene Katchalov: {Q-Clubs}{J-Diamonds}
Dmitry Yurasov: {A-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Katchalov needed to hit to survive but he couldn't connect to the {3-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{7-Spades} board.

Katchalov was sent home and Yurasov added even more chips to his impressive stack.

Ortynskiy Triples Up; Staszko Busted

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Martin Staszko
Martin Staszko

It was folded all the way to Martin Staszko on the cutoff. He moved all in for 93,000 in total on the button, Xixiang Luo asked for a count.

He threw in the calling chips and Mats Karlsson folded his small blind. From the big blind, Viatcheslav Ortynskiy called all in for slightly less than Staszko, 89,000 in total.

Martin Staszko: {A-Clubs}{10-Clubs}
Xixiang Luo: {A-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Viatcheslav Ortynskiy: {A-Hearts}{K-Hearts}

Ortynskiy dominated both of his opponents and was looking to triple up. The board ran out {6-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} and he was back in the hunt for the title.

Luo took another hit, while Staszko was left with only 4,000 behind.

In the next hand, the former November Niner went all in and on the button, Mats Karlsson raised to 16,000. The blind got out of the way and cards were tabled.

It was {5-Clubs}{4-Hearts} for Staszko against Karlsson's {10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}. The flop was {K-Clubs}{7-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}. Karlsson made a pair of sevens, but Staszko had a straight draw.

Neither the {Q-Diamonds} turn or the {2-Spades} river completed that draw and Staszko was eliminated from the tournament.

No Second EPT Malta Title for Montury

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Jean Montury
Jean Montury

EPT11 Malta champion Jean Montury just busted from this years Main Event. For most of the day he was riding the short stack but managed to grind his way up from time to time.

That grind came to an end when he busted to the hands of Aliaksei Boika.

It was Guillaume Valle that opened the pot with a raise to 15,000 and Bastian Dohler called. Montury shove all in for 64,000 and it was Boika who made a four-bet to 115,000. Everybody got out of the way and the cards were tabled.

Jean Montury: {A-Diamonds}{Q-Spades}
Aliaksei Boika: {Q-Hearts}{Q-Clubs}

Montury was in big trouble against Boika's queens and needed an ace or another escape route.

The {8-Hearts}{2-Diamonds}{J-Hearts} flop wasn't any help for the former champion and when the {8-Spades} hit on the turn he was down to the aces as outs.

The river wasn't an ace, it was the {7-Hearts} and Montury was sent packing.

Sick Call Crushes Visalli's Hopes, Out Shortly After

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Gianfranco Visalli
Gianfranco Visalli

In a massive clash between Gianfranco Visalli and Frederik Jensen, the latter came out as the winner after spending nearly ten minutes in the tank.

Preflop, Visalli opened to 13,000 from under the gun. Behind him, Jensen reraised and made it 42,000. The Italian made the call, and the two of them saw an innocuous flop of {5-Spades}{2-Clubs}{5-Hearts} appear. Visalli checked, Jensen followed up with a bet of 28,000, Visalli check-raised to 68,000 and Jensen called.

After the dealer burned and turned the {8-Clubs}, Visalli wasted no time putting Jensen to the test, and put him all in for 156,000 in a pot of close to 200,000. Jensen thought long and hard, and the clock was eventually called on the Dane.

With just seven seconds left, Jensen slammed a tower of chips into the middle and turned over {8-Spades}{6-Spades}, much to Visalli's disbelief.

"Sick call", muttered Visalli as he turned over {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}, looking for one of the only two remaining sevens on the river.

It wasn't. The dealer put out the {3-Clubs}, and Frederik Jensen surged to the top of the standings with more than half a million chips.

Just two hands later, Gianfranco Visalli's remaining chips disappeared as well. Visalli got it in holding {Q-Clubs}{6-Clubs} on a flop of {J-Clubs}{Q-Spades}{7-Clubs}, but needed help against Xixiang Luo's {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}. No help was found, as the board ran out {4-Diamonds}{A-Spades},

Visalli, who topped the leaderboard for nearly two days, is gone just like that in 47th place.

Hand 1

Alexander Debus raised to 11,000 from the button and Walter Treccarichi three-bet to 32,500 from the small blind. Alessandro Longobardi four-bet all in for 42,500 from the big blind and Debus as well as Treccarichi called.

On the {K-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{6-Diamonds} flop, both players checked. Debus bet the {3-Clubs} turn for 32,000 and Treccarichi folded.

Alessandro Longobardi: {A-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}
Alexander Debus: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

The {K-Clubs} on the river was a blank and Longobardi busted.

Hand 2

At the very same table and one hand later, Debus raised to 11,000 and Ole Schemion in the blinds three-bet to 100,000 with little chips behind. Debus shoved and Schemion called all in for 119,000.

Ole Schemion: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}
Alexander Debus: {A-Spades}{Q-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{J-Spades} and again the eights prevailed.

Hand 3

At almost the same time and one table over, Marko Popovic was at risk with the {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} and Davidi Kitai from one seat over had pocket queens. The board came {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} and Popovic rivered a flush to stay in.

Philipps Bubbles EPT Malta Main Event

Benjamin Philipps bubbles EPT 13 Malta 2016 €5,300 Main Event
Benjamin Philipps bubbles EPT 13 Malta 2016 €5,300 Main Event

After his earlier double up, Benjamin Philipps was blinded down to just 5,500 in chips.

He then had to post the big blind and was left with only a single 500-chip behind. From first position, Tomas Macnamara, who doubled him in the previous hand, raised to 10,000. It was folded to Philipps and he started waiting for all the other tables to finish their hand.

There were no other all-in-situations, so Philipps was at risk of becoming the bubble boy when he threw in his final chip. The camera crews rushed to the table and he showed his {Q-Diamonds}{2-Clubs}.

Macnamara was ahead with the {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}.

The board ran out an uneventful {10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}{8-Spades}{J-Spades}.

In the end, it didn't really matter and Philipps was on his way out empty handed while all the others in the room secured a pay-day of at least €8,070.
