Life Outside Poker: Boston Rob Shares Story of Costa Rica Poker Raid w/ Daniel Negreanu & Cheryl Hines

Life Outside Poker is a new podcast for PokerNews hosted by Connor Richards that seeks to pull back the curtain on poker players and allow viewers and listeners to get to know them on a personal level.

In the 21st episode, Connor speaks with Survivor legend Boston Rob, aka Rob Mariano, about growing up near Fenway Park, learning poker at the age of 6, studying psychology at Boston University, applying for Survivor and winning Season 22, his recent appearance on Deal or No Deal Island and filming an upcoming season of The Traitors.

Boston Rob also revealed a story about Costa Rican authorities raiding a mansion known to host high-stakes poker games during a 2006 filming that included Daniel Negreanu, Josh Arieh, David Williams, Michael Mizrachi and actress Cheryl Hines.

"(Gambling mogul) Calvin (Ayre) had a big party at the house, and they came in guns drawn," he said. "And we were fine, but we all had to stay at the party until they checked our passports and everything. I think it was a little bit of a shakedown. But we had a good weekend."

There were around 15,000 chips already in the pot on 3♠Q♣J♣ when Alm Wilson who was under the gun checked to Kyriakos Papadopoulos on his direct left who bet 5,000 and Wilson called.

Both players checked the 9♦ turn and when the 4♠ hit the river, Wilson bet 25,000 which was just enough to put Papadopoulos all-in.

Papadopoulos was clearly confused and reluctant to fold but after a long tank his cards hit the muck.

Karim Maekelberg opened the action with a raise, only to face an all-in shove from Felix Kias. The table folded back to Maekelberg, who snap-called, setting up a dramatic showdown.

Kias needed help against Maekelberg’s pocket kings, and the 4♠3♠9♠ flop delivered a glimmer of hope with a flush draw. The 9♦ turn kept Maekelberg in front, leaving Kias needing a spade or a ten to survive.

The river brought a spade, but it was the K♠, giving Maekelberg a full house and dashing Kias’ dreams. Kias was sent packing, while Maekelberg stacked the pot.

There were roughly 56,000 chips already in the pot on a board of 4♠5♠4♦7♠5♦. Istvan Birizdo moved all in from the cutoff for 54,000 when the action got checked to him.

Nariman Yaghmai who was in early position quickly folded. Once Giovanni Agliozzo received confirmation of the chip count he eventually called and tabled 6♦6♠. Birizdo showed A♥2♥ and was left with less than a big blind.

Bustouts are coming thick and fast in the Eureka High Roller and among them was Fabrizio Nuetzel, who pushed all in from the hijack for 14,000, a little over ten big blinds. Darius Gadeikis called in the big blind with the covering stack to put Nuetzel at risk as the cards were turned.

Kozieja Applies the Pressure

With around 22,000 already in the middle and the board showing A♠6♠8♦J♠, Grzegorz Kozieja checked from early position. Jacob Amsellem seized the opportunity to fire a bet of 8,500, and Simon Higgins, after some deliberation, made the call.

Kozieja then ramped up the aggression with a raise to 21,000, forcing Amsellem into a swift fold. Higgins, left with only 23,600 behind, took a moment before opting to call.

The 10♣ landed on the river, and Kozieja moved all in, putting Higgins to the ultimate test. After some consideration, Higgins surrendered, conceding the pot to Kozieja, who raked in a healthy stack.

Action folded around to Ejlal Majid, who raised from the small blind. Severi Palmu then moved all in from the big blind for around 25,000 and Majid quickly made the call to put his opponent at risk. The cards were turned.
