Brazil's Guilherme Kleist Wins PokerStars Spin & Go Championship Live

Guilherme Kleist
Guilherme Kleist

Brazil has always had a strong online poker pedigree, but Guilherme Kleist has shown he can do it on the live felt as well after winning the PokerStars Spin & Go Championship Live at EPT Barcelona.

Having admitted to playing hundreds of thousands of Spin & Go tournaments online, Kleist put on a masterclass, coming from behind to win 4-2-0 against runner-up Joao Nascimento, who had won the first to matches of the final, and Krystian Lisowski, who had already won €20,000 in Spins over the course of the tournament.

A total of €150,000 was up for grabs in the final, and after a three-way deal, Kleist took home the lion's share with €75,000 heading his way.

"It feels amazing. I ran so hot the entire tournament," he said afterwards. "I'm so lucky and so grateful."

Kleist won €5,500 in Spin winnings during the tournament and takes home over €80,000 in combined winnings.

"Of course, the money means a lot, but it's more about the symbolism of the tournament than the money."

Day 2 Action

Nine players returned for Round 3 to kick off Day 2, and it didn't take long for us to have our first player through to the final. Krystian Lisowski dispatched PokerStars Team Pro AndyPSX and Cendoya Ruiz in just under an hour, with Ruiz the only other player to win even a single match.

He was soon joined by Guilherme Kleist who, with his wife watching on, locked up his spot in the final after a back-and-forth match with Romania's Claudiu Moraru and Spain's David Xarau.

Eventually, and after a long wait, Joao Nascimento became the final player through to the final, ensuring two Brazilians will be contesting for first prize, after Nascimento grabbed four wins before Ilari Tiainen from Finland (3 wins) and Axel Piñeiro from Argentina (2 wins).

The Final

The final three players agreed to a deal, ensuring each player would receive €25,000 with the remaining payouts as follows:

  • 1. €50,000
  • 2. €17,500
  • 3. €7,500

Nascimento dominated the opening two matches, defeating Lisowski heads-up in the first and Kleist heads-up in the second.

However, after Lisowski bust first in Game 3, Kleist turned the tables on his compatriot to notch his first win, and avoid it being match point to Nascimento.

With Nascimento busting first in Game 4, all eyes were on Lisowski to see whether he would score his first point of the match, but it was Kleist who tied things up at two wins, along with Nascimento.

After a short break, play resumed with Kleist eliminating Lisowski on the very first hand of Game 5. A short while later, Kleist cracked the pocket aces of Nascimento, after flopping two pair with king-queen, to put himself within touching distance of the title.

In what turned out to be the final Game, Lisowski found himself all in again vs. Kleist, this time with A5 against the AK of his opponent. There was no help and it was down to Nascimento to halt Kleist's winning streak and extend the contest.

Down 2:1 in chips, Nascimento could only watch as Kleist turned the screw. Nascimento cracked pocket deuces with jack-eight to stay alive to all but level the stacks. The money went in moments later with Kleist holding ten-nine against the ace-king of Nascimento, but this time it was Kleist who flopped best to move ahead by the narrowest of margins.

The final hand saw Nascimento at risk but ahead:

Joao Nascimento: AQ All in
Guilherme Kleist: K8

A queen on the turn gave Nascimento a pair, but a king on the turn gave Kleist the lead, and after the river bricked he emerged triumphant as the winner of the PokerStars Spin & Go Championship Live.

Game 6: Kleist Wins Four-In-A-Row and the Title!

There was another early confrontation between Guilherme Kleist and Krystian Lisowski, with Kleist's ace-king besting the ace-five of Lisowski.

It was now up to Joao Nascimento to halt Kleist's winning streak and extend the contest. Down 2:1 in chips, Nascimento could only watch as Kleist turned the screw.

Nascimento could not escape, and eventually got it in with J8, needing to crack the 22 of Kleist to stay alive and deny his fellow Brazilian the win. And he did so, with the AAJ95 pairing Nascimento to all but level the stacks.

The money went in again moments later with Kleist 109 against the AK of Nascimento. Nascimento held the chip lead by a slender margin, but this time it was Kleist who flopped best on the J10359 to move within touching distance of the title.

The final hand saw Nascimento at risk but ahead:

Joao Nascimento: AQ All in
Guilherme Kleist: K8

The board came Q62K5 with the turn giving Kleist the lead, and after the river bricked he emerged triumphant as the winner of the PokerStars Spin & Go Championship Live.

Game 5: Match Point Kleist After Rapid-Fire Game

There was action from the very first hand of Game 5, with Krystian Lisowski 98 up against the 55 of Guilherme Kleist. The pocket pair held on the Q6323 runout, and just like that we were down to heads-up.

It didn't take long for Kleist to secure victory in this one, flopping two pair with KQ on KQ482 and taking the rest of Nascimento's chips, who was unfortunate to have picked up AA at the worst time.

Score After Game 5

Guilherme Kleist: 3 wins
Joao Nascimento: 2 wins
Krystian Lisowski: 0 wins

Game 4: Back-to-Back Wins for Kleist

In Game 4, Guilherme Kleist took the lead during the early stages.

Krystian Lisowski doubled through Joao Nascimento to stay alive, and it was Nascimento who missed out on heads-up play for the first time this match after running into the pocket kings of Kleist.

That meant Kleist held the chip lead heads-up as he searched for his second point of the match.

Lisowski would double with ace-four, rivering a straight to crack the sixes of his opponent, but Kleist would then double back with K4 against the 108.

Kleist would move to within touching distance winning with K7 against the Q9 of Lisowski, and would then close out victory for his second win of the final.

Score After Game 4

Joao Nascimento: 2 wins
Guilherme Kleist: 2 wins
Krystian Lisowski: 0 wins

Game 3: First Win for Kleist

In Game 3, Krystian Lisowski's stack took a hit after Joao Nascimento's queen-deuce cracked the Polish player's pocket kings.

Lisowski would double through Guilherme Kleist to stay alive, but would be eliminated by the same player. Kleist flopped a set of nines with 99 on 10963Q, but with Lisowski rivering a pair of queens with Q7 he called a shove only to see the bad news.

In a repeat of Game 2, the Brazilians went head to head with Kleist looking to avoid Nascimento heading into a 3-0 lead.

Aces saw Kleist pick up the heads-up lead and he converted it into his first win.

Score after Game 3

Joao Nascimento: 2 wins
Guilherme Kleist: 1 win
Krystian Lisowski: 0 wins

Game 2: Nascimento Doubles Lead in Final

Joao Nascimento eked out a small lead early on in Game 2, before the first big confrontation saw Krystian Lisowski eliminated.

Lisowski shoved blind on blind with K4 and was called by Nascimento with Q9 in the big blind. The board came Q3287 with Nascimento's flopped top pair enough to eliminate one of his opponents.

Now up against Guilherme Kleist, Nascimento shoved blind on blind with K8 and was called by Kleist's J9 in the big blind.

In the battle of the Brazilians, Nascimento didn't even need the king on the turn of a 10102K7 board, but it saw him move to two wins, with four required for victory.

Score After Game 2

Joao Nascimento: 2 wins
Guilherme Kleist: 0 wins
Krystian Lisowski: 0 wins

Game 1: Nascimento Strikes First Blood

Joao Nascimento
Joao Nascimento

In the very first game of the Spin & Go Championship Live, it's Joao Nascimento who notched the first win.

The Brazilian could only watch as his compatriot, Guilherme Kleist, lost out to Krystian Lisowski early on, after both paired their ace on an ace-high board, only for Kleist to be outkicked. Nascimento then doubled through Lisowski into the chip lead after the Polish player's flush draw bricked, and the Brazilian's top pair was good.

Nascimento then put his stack to use shoving on both opponents, busting short-stacked Kleist, who had failed to recover from the confrontation with Lisowski. The Pole managed to double up, but Nascimento eventually secured the victory.

In the final hand, Lisowski got A3 in against the Q6 of Nascimento. The A97 gave Lisowski top pair, but Nascimento had flopped a flush draw. He turned a pair himself on the Q turn, but the flush came in on the 10 river and Nascimento secured Game 1.

Score After Game 1

Joao Nascimento: 1 win
Guilherme Kleist: 0 wins
Krystian Lisowski: 0 wins
