There were times during the final table of the 2024 PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT) Monte-Carlo Main Event that it seemed like it was fate for Derk van Luijk to be the one to hoist the gold-plated trophy at the end.
The 43-year-old Dutchman was all in on the penultimate day with ace-jack against aces but caught running jacks to make trips and earn a miracle double up. He was a card away from elimination on the final day but spiked two pair to stay alive. Van Luijk doubled up six different times over the course of the day. He ended up winning the most important all-in of all, the last one, as he defeated Boris Angelov at the end of an epic heads-up match to win the EPT title and the €1,000,000 top prize.
“That’s an amazing feeling. I cannot even realize still that I’ve won. It feels like I’m spacing right now. You don’t realize it yet, but it’s an amazing feeling,” Van Luijk said after conquering the largest field in EPT Monte-Carlo history with 1,208 total entries.

With 25 players remaining and one elimination away from the final three tables, updates are going on a 30-minute delay to match the PokerStars live stream. Updates will resume at about 7:20 p.m. local time.
Stay tuned for all the action.
The remaining 25 players are going on a 20-minute break.
Juan Pardo open-raised to 50,000 and Enrico Coppola three-bet to 125,000, which Pardo called.
The flop came 3♠8♦A♦ and Pardo checked. Coppola bet 80,000 and Pardo check-raised to 225,000. Coppola reraised to 600,000 and Pardo called to bring the size of the pot up to around 1,500,000.
The action slowed down temporarily when both players checked on the Q♣ turn. The river came the 3♥ and Pardo moved all in for 945,000. Coppola went deep into the tank before finally giving up his hand.
With the rest of the tables already on break, Pardo scooped in a huge pot, bringing his stack up to more than 2.4 million.

Leon Zeaiter raised to 75,000 in the cutoff and Jerome Sgorrano called on the button.
Zeaiter checked the 9♦8♠2♠ flop and Sgorrano bet 65,000. Zeaiter then raised to 215,000 and Sgorrano called.
The turn was the A♦ and Zeaiter bet 400,000. Sgorrano called again to see the 4♥ river, where Zeaiter moved all in.
"Are you bluffing or not, my friend?" Sgorrano said as he went deep into the tank. He eventually emerged with a call and Zeaiter made sure he put the chips in before slamming down A♣A♥ for a set. Sgorrano mucked 10♠9♠ and Zeaiter doubled up.
"I have more time banks than chips," Sgorrano said as he put in his last 15,000 (less than the big blind) the next hand. Action folded to Malcolm Franchi in the big blind, who automatically put him at risk.
Jerome Sgorrano: J♦5♦
Malcolm Franchi: 10♣6♣
Franchi hit a pair and flush draw on the 6♥Q♣7♣ flop, but Sgorrano made a pair of jacks on the J♥ turn. The river was the 6♠ and Franchi improved to trips to send Sgorrano to the rail.
