First Three Down, Tsang Moving Up

Level 8 : 30,000/60,000, 7,000 ante

The first three eliminations of the day have flown in, with Jonathan Godfrey, Tom Hu and Fenglei Qian hitting the rail. Qian started the day with a top-five chip stack, but apparently lost some small pots early before sending the majority of his chips to Anson Tsang, who is now one of the chip leaders. There are now 48 players remaining.

Smith Wins a Small One off Cheong

Level 8 : 30,000/60,000, 7,000 ante

Ever the active player, Joseph Cheong has lost a fair chunk of his stack early here on Day 2 of the GDAM Main Event. Some of those chips went straight to Dan Smith during a recent hand which played out as follows.

Cheong was in early position when he opened it up to 125,000. Folded around to David Steicke on the button and he put out 150,000. Steicke didn't realise Cheong had opened and was trying do so himself. The dealer corrected the mistake and Steicke was forced to call. Smith also called out of the big blind and the dealer flipped over a {10-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{2-Spades} flop. Smith checked here and Cheong bet 180,000. Stecike quickly folded, while Smith made the call.

The {4-Spades} turn would see checks from both Cheong and Smith, which would again be the case on the {9-Diamonds} river. At showdown, Smith tabled {10-Spades}{8-Diamonds} and that was enough to see Cheong's cards hit the muck.

Unlucky River for Powell, Lucky One for Tang

Level 8 : 30,000/60,000, 7,000 ante

Devan Tang and Brian Powell recently got all their chips in preflop, with Tang at-risk holding {k-Diamonds}{q-Spades} against the {j-Diamonds}{j-Clubs} of Powell. Up to the turn on the {8-Spades}{10-Hearts}{4-Spades}{6-Hearts} board, things were looking good for Powell and bleak for Tang. Then the {q-Clubs} river was slammed onto the felt and the tables had turned.

Tang is now back up over 20 big blinds, while Powell will need some help soon with around 15 big blinds.

Three Way All-in Sees Gruissem Bust

Level 9 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante

We recently arrived at Table 3 to find three players all in preflop. We didn't see how the chips went in, but Keith Gipson was all in for 284,000 from under the gun, Philipp Gruissem was in late position and was all in for just over 1 million in chips and Greg Merson was all in from the small blind, having both his opponents well covered. Below is how the cards looked.

Merson: {j-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Gruissem: {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}
Gipson: {q-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Gipson was looking good to double up and Gruissem was needing some help to stay alive. By the time the dealer spread out a {7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{8-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds} board, Gipson had picked up 284,000 from both Gruissem and Merson’s stack, while Merson had taken Gruissem’s last 1 million in chips.

Lessons in Running it Twice

Level 9 : 50,000/100,000, 10,000 ante
Joseph Cheong
Joseph Cheong

"Wait, wait, wait," said Ying Wu, dead seriously. "I wanted to run it twice."

The hand in question saw Joseph Cheong all in preflop holding {a-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds} against the {a-Spades}{q-Diamonds} of Wu. Cheong was all in for just 580,000 after losing the majority of his stack during the first level. Wu said he wanted to run it twice after the turn card had been dealt on a {j-Spades}{j-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{a-Hearts} and was seriously asking Cheong if he was interested.

Before Cheong could answer, the dealer had flipped over the river and Wu was not happy. Wu even called the floor over, at which point it was explained to Wu that you can't run it twice in a tournament, only in a cash game.

Following the safe river, Cheong had doubled up to around 1 million in chips.
