Steven Gurney-Goldman Wins HPO Grantville Regional Main Event ($29,342)!

Level 23 : 10,000/20,000, 3,000 ante
Steven Gurney-Goldman - 1st Place
Steven Gurney-Goldman - 1st Place

Steven Gurney-Goldman banked the biggest score of his young live tournament career, pocketing $29,342 for winning the Hollywood Poker Open Grantville Regional Main Event. Gurney-Goldman turned the tables on chip leader Chris Moneymaker early in the final table and was able to roll over the rest of the field once he had a commanding chip lead.

In addition to the prize money, Gurney-Goldman scored a $2,500 seat in the HPO season-ending event in Las Vegas.

The tournament drew 92 runners, a big step up from last year's 37-player field, and 18 of them survived Day 1 to return on Sunday for Day 2. Gurney-Goldman began the day with a modest 34 big blinds, and it was the Moneymaker show early on, as the former World Series of Poker Main Event champ and current HPO ambassador ran up a huge stack. As the day wore on, the field was cut down to a final table of 10, losing notable tournament pro Alex Queen along the way.

Only nine players would get paid, and Moneymaker, who took 365,000 to the final table, abused the bubble with constant aggression and had about a third of the chips in play at one point as opponents tightened up. Short stacks doubled numerous times, enabling Moneymaker to keep picking up the blinds and antes, but Matt Mahek ultimately bubbled out to change the table dynamic.

That's when Gurney-Goldman made his move, first doubling up after opening with queens and seeing an {8-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{3-Spades} flop against Moneymaker, who called flop, turn ({7-Hearts}), and river ({5-Clubs}) barrels, the last one being an all-in shove. Moneymaker could only laugh at the cooler afterwards, showing {q-Hearts}{8-Hearts} for top two.

Greg Davis (ninth) and Michael Nolan (eighth) were the first two to receive payouts. Then, Moneymaker dropped two huge pots and found himself short for the first time since midway through Day 1. He sent his last 60,000 into the pot with the {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, but didn't improve against Day 1 chip leader Jeremy Cline, who had {j-}{j-}, ending his run in seventh place.

Gurney-Goldman then found himself with ladies at another opportune time, as Rob Brown shoved for 140,000 over a raise during Level 21 (6,000/12,000/1,000) in the cutoff seat. Gurney-Goldman shoved as well from the blinds, folding out the opener, and found himself against the {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}. Brown found an eight on the turn, but Gurney-Goldman binked a queen on the river to get the knockout.

Cline then went out fifth, followed by Ken Moore in fourth. Gurney-Goldman then had a key spot go his way three-handed, as Anatoly Podolsky shoved from the button for 185,000 at Level 23 (10,000/20,000/3,000). Gurney-Goldman called in the small blind with the {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}, while Kent Bitzer tank-folded what he said was {10-}{10-} in the big blind. Podolsky had the {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds} and failed to improve, leaving Gurney-Goldman with a big chip lead going into heads-up play and Bitzer with a major missed opportunity if he indeed had tens.

Bitzer battled back a bit, but Gurney-Goldman picked off a big bluff to put him back on the brink, finishing the job when he called Bitzer's 14-big blind shove with the {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} and holding against the {a-Spades}{2-Clubs}.

The HPO returns to action in St. Louis later this month, and PokerNews will see you then for more live coverage.

Kent Bitzer - 2nd Place

Kent Bitzer shoved for about 280,000 on the button, and Steven Gurney-Goldman called.

Bitzer: {a-Spades}{2-Clubs}
Gurney-Goldman: {4-Spades}{4-Clubs}

Gurney-Goldman was in a dominating position and had the tournament in his grasp, and he pumped his fist as the {4-Hearts} appeared in the window, followed by {10-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}.

"Good game," he said as they shook hands while the {10-Spades} hit the board, ending the hand. The river was a meaningless {6-Spades}.

Anatoly Podolsky shoved 185,000 from the button, and Steven Gurney-Goldman called. Kent BItzer said he needed a couple of minutes but ultimately folded.

Podolsky: {q-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Gurney-Goldman: {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}

A run out of {8-Clubs}{5-Spades}{3-Spades}{4-Diamonds}{a-Diamonds} meant Podolsky hadn't improved, and the tournament's down to two players. Bitzer said he folded tens.

Kent Bitzer raised to 65,000 on the button. Ken Moore jammed for 177,000 in the small blind, and after a couple of minutes, Bitzer called.

Bitzer: {a-Hearts}{8-Hearts}
Moore: {k-Hearts}{10-Hearts}

Moore observed that the hearts wouldn't help, and the {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} flop didnt either.

"No king, no ten," one of the other players said, and that's what happened as {2-Diamonds} and {3-Clubs} fell.

Anatoly Podolsky raised under the gun and called the shove of Jeremy Cline, who had a bit over 100,000.

Podolsky: {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}
Cline: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}

The race was on, but it was over quickly as Podolsky flopped a set and turned a boat, clapping forcefully when he saw the {6-Spades} on the flop.

Ken Moore opened for a raise to 28,000, and Rob Brown said he was all in from the button, what looked to be about a 140,000 shove. Steven Gurney-Goldman jammed it in from the big blind, and Moore folded.

Gurney-Goldman: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Brown: {8-Spades}{8-Hearts}

Brown stood up, knowing he would need to get lucky, but he found only a backdoor straight draw on the {7-Hearts}{3-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop. The dealer burned and turned an {8-Clubs} though, and a double looked imminent. However, the lead was fleeting for Brown as the {q-Spades} hit the river.

Chris Moneymaker - 7th Place

Chris Moneymaker opened to 25,000 under the gun and saw the {2-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{k-Hearts} flop heads up with Anatoly Podolsky. Moneymaker bet 33,000, and Podolsky called. He bet 55,000 on the {4-Clubs} turn, and Podolsky took his time and called again.

"How much do you have left?" Moneymaker asked. "About 100,000?"

It looked to be around 130,000, and Moneymaker said he was all in after the {10-Spades} river.

"Call," Podolsky said instantly, tabling {4-Diamonds}{4-Spades} for the stone nuts.

"Wow," Moneymaker said, sending 139,000 across the table. "I'm running into some big hands."

He only had about 60,000 left, and he got the rest in a few hands later with {a-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} but didn't improve against Jeremy Cline's jacks.

Moore Takes Lead

Level 20 : 5,000/10,000, 1,000 ante
Ken Moore
Ken Moore

Chris Moneymaker raised to 20,000 in the cutoff and got calls from Ken Moore (button) and Rob Brown (big blind). Brown came out betting with 25,000 on the {j-Hearts}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop, and both opponents continued. The {10-Diamonds} came on the turn, and Brown checked. Moneymaker bet 60,000, and nobody wanted to dump their hand still. Action checked to Moore on the {9-Spades}, and he announced all in. Brown and Moneymaker folded in relatively short order, with Moneymaker lamenting he could have raised the flop, saying he thought he had the best of it on the turn as well.

Michael Nolan - 8th Place
Michael Nolan - 8th Place

Michael Nolan pushed in his last 50,000 or so from the button, and Anatoly Podolsky called.

Nolan: {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}
Podolsky: {a-Clubs}{q-Spades}

Nolan began walking away, grabbing his coat.

"Oh, he's really selling it," Chris Moneymaker said.

Sure enough, a {5-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds} flop gave him a flush draw. However, two bricks fell on the last two streets, and a short stack finally failed to survive an all in.

Greg Davis - 9th Place

Greg Davis put his last 44,000 in under the gun, and Rob Brown put him at risk.

Brown: {j-Diamonds}{j-Hearts}
Davis: {6-Hearts}{6-Clubs}

"My time's run out," Davis said, and it looked that way after the {k-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{10-Clubs} flop. An {a-Clubs} was what he needed on the turn to grab some equity, but the {4-Hearts} river sealed his end.

Players are on break for 15 minutes.
