Spears Bags Huge Chip Lead at HPT The Meadows

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Andy Spears
Andy Spears

The final flight of HPT The Meadows $1,100 Main Event has concluded and 28 players have bagged and advanced from the 197 who played today, the largest field of the three by a wide margin. Andy Spears bagged the chip lead for the day and the entire tournament with a massive 526,000.

Spears was in control the entire day, steadily building his stack without much resistance. He found his way up to 100,000 by the dinner break, playing and winning a lot of smaller pots. As the blinds got bigger, so did his stack as he found himself with 180,000 midway through Level 11. By the last break, he was up to 270,000, which he almost doubled in the last two hours of play.

Spears looks to claim his first HPT title, though the spotlight is nothing new to him. With over $1.3 million in live winnings, several tournament victories, and numerous high stakes final tables under his belt, he is one of the favorites in the field as the three heats will combine to one field in the morning.

In addition to Spears, Christopher Lee (479,500) and Anthony McIe (390,500) also bagged larger stacks than Jason Pickup (387,500) the chip leader after the first two flights. Other notable players to advance included Stan Jablonski (167,500) and Iverson Cotton Snuffer (193,000).

Some players who did not advance from the final heat of the tournament were Nick Pupillo, Andy Rubinberg, DJ MacKinnon, and Mikey Esquivel.

Day 2 will resume tomorrow at 11 am local time and will be played upstairs in the poker room. Players will play down to the final table, which will be played and live streamed on Monday. The PokerNews team will be on the floor for all the action, so come back for updates for the rest of the tournament.

Jablonski Doubles Through Dellaria

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante
Stan Jablonski
Stan Jablonski

Christopher Lee bet 15,000 on {2-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}{2-Clubs} from early position and both Stan Jablonski in the hijack and Frank Dellaria in the cutoff called. Lee checked the {10-Hearts} turn and Jablonski bet 25,000. Dellaria called, but Jablonski only had about 18,000 back. Clearly expecting the all-in shove on the river, Dellaria held his chips over the pot as Jablonski shoved while the river was delivered. Dellaria called and Jablonski showed {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts}.

Dellaria showed {k-Spades}{j-Hearts} and the river wasn't a jack so he sent over a double.

Pupillo Sent to Join His Brother

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Nick Pupillo jammed in the hijack for 23,500 and the player on the button ripped over him to fold out the blinds, showing {5-Hearts}{5-Clubs}.

"Best hand I could see," Pupillo said, turning over {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}.

The {k-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{9-Spades} board gave him plenty of outs but the {4-Diamonds} river wasn't one of them.

End of Registration

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
HPT Meadows Chips
HPT Meadows Chips

With the close of dinner break on Day 1c of HPT The Meadows $1,100 Main Event, registration has closed for the flight and, by extension, the tournament. The board reads 197 entries for Day 1c. Combined with the 148 logged over the course of the first two flights, that means 345 entries total for a prize pool expected to be $334,650 per the breakdown on the structure sheet.

That's enough to beat the $250,000 guarantee fairly comfortably. A full breakdown of the prize pool will be posted when it's made available to PokerNews.

Nick Pupillo Eliminated by Jordan Smith

Level 7 : 300/600, 600 ante
Nick Pupillo
Nick Pupillo

Action was opened preflop by a raise to 1,500 from the hijack. Jordan Smith three-bet from the cutoff to 4,000. Nick Pupillo four-bet all in for around 22,000 from the small blind, and the cutoff folded before Smith put in the chips to make the call.

Nick Pupillo: {k-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Jordan Smith: {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}

The flop came {q-Spades}{j-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} giving Pupillo a pair of queens, but the turn was a {10-Clubs}, completing Broadway for Smith. The river was the {5-Hearts} and Smith faded the chop to take down the pot and send Nick Pupillo to the rail for a moment, though he has since reentered on the final heat of this tournament.

James Pupillo Doubles Before Break

Level 3 : 100/300, 0 ante
James Pupillo
James Pupillo

In the final minutes before the first break, there was a pot with over 35,000 in the middle with a board of {4-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{a-Spades}{k-Hearts}. The hand had finished, and the dealer was counting out the stacks of James Pupillo and James Watson, as the two had been all in.

Watson's hand was already mucked, while Pupillo's {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades} was still visible for a full house. His remaining chips prior to the river bet was 13,800, which was matched from Watson's stack. After the hand was over, Watson was extremely short, and was since eliminated from the tournament.

Straight Flush With Seven-Deuce

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
HPT The Meadows
HPT The Meadows

James Watson, in the big blind, bet 2,400 on a board of {8-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} after the small blind checked. A player in middle position called and the small blind tank-folded, bringing a {10-Diamonds}. Watson bet about 5,300 and his opponent clicked in what looked to be a min-raise. Watson quickly called and his opponent opened {9-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for a full house.

Watson, however, had a straight flush with {7-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds}.

"Straight flush with seven-deuce," someone said in amazement.

Welcome to Day 1c of the HPT The Meadows Main Event

HPT
HPT

The third and final flight of HPT The Meadows $1,100 Main Event is upon us.

Like Day 1b, Day 1c is scheduled for a noon start. There's still work to be done for the tournament to hit the $250,000 guarantee, as there have been 148 entries logged through the first two days, meaning a little over 100 are still needed in order to make the number.

As far as the happenings through those first two starting days, 28 players have booked spots in Day 2, with 387,500 from Day 1a's Jason Pickup remaining the high mark after Jimmy Stevens and Dan Wagner both bagged a little shy of that on Day 1b.

Day 1c will see entrants once again given 30,000 starting stacks with the option of unlimited reentry in the event things go south. Levels will be 40 minutes long with 15 scheduled for the day, along with a one-hour dinner break and 15-minute breaks after every two levels.

Notable players like Nick Pupillo, Andy Spears, DJ MacKinnon and Adam Friedman have tried their luck and failed in one or both of the first two starting days, so we expect to see some of them take further cracks at finding a bag here on Day 1c. PokerNews will be on hand to document their successes or failures along with those of the rest of the runners as the third starting day develops starting at noon.
