Terpstra Shows One

Level 1 : 100/100, 0 ante

On a {5-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{3-Hearts}{8-Diamonds} board, Eric Hardt a 5,000 chip in front of him, but was contemplating an all-in bet from Ryan Terpstra to his right.

"A really good flop," Hardt said to himself, then followed up with, "Better turn."

Hardt tanked for a few more minutes until a clock was called. Just a few seconds after HPT Tournament Director Jeremy Smith arrived at the table to begin the 30-second clock, Hardt folded.

"Phew!" Terpstra said, flashing the {a-Hearts} from his hand before mucking both of his cards. "Good thing you don't know I play PLO!"

"The Maven" Binks an Early Double

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante

"I got a fun one for ya," David "The Maven" Gutfreund told us during a round of the tables, and he shared with us a hand that led to the elimination of the player to his right.

The eliminated player raised to 300 from under the gun, and was called by Gutfreund next to act, as well as Kenneth Brunette in the small blind and Joseph Melby in the big blind.

Action checked to the under-the-gun player on a {10-Hearts}{9-Spades}{3-Spades} flop, and he bet 700. Gutfreund raised to 2,000, and after the blinds folded, the under-the-gun player jammed, and Gutfreund called.

Opponent: {k-}{k-}
David Gutfreund: {a-}{a-}

Gutfreund's aces held for the knockout after a blank turn and river, and Gutfreund sits with a strong stack an hour into Day 1c.

That's a Mean One, Mr. Grinch

Michael Schlegel raised to 600 from early position, and was called by a player in middle position, as well as David Moses in the hijack.

Schlegel bet 900 on the {j-Hearts}{q-Clubs}{4-Clubs} flop, and only Moses called.

Schlegel bet 1,600 on the {j-Diamonds} turn, and Moses stuck around with another call.

The {8-Hearts} hit the river, and Schlegel quickly checked. Moses thought for a few moments, looking down at his Grinch card protector as he did, before checking back, and after Schlegel tabled {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}, Moses rolled over {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts} for the winner.

Casino Gets it at Least Half Right

Level 2 : 100/200, 0 ante
Craig Casino
Craig Casino

In a five-way pot, action checked to a player in middle position on a {8-Hearts}{2-Clubs}{2-Hearts} flop, and he bet 700. Diane Dines called from the hijack, and Craig Casino raised to 3,100 on the button. Only Dines called.

Dines check-called a bet of 3,500 on the {q-Spades} turn, and the {a-Spades} fell on the river. Dines led out for 6,000.

"I was wondering how the hell you had a deuce in your hand," Casino said, looking over the board. "Either you have ace-deuce suited or a missed flush draw. You don't strike me as the latter."

Casino folded a moment later, and Dines turned over the {2-Spades}.

"Aren't you going to show me the ace?" Casino said with a grin, but Dines mucked the other card face-down.

Daciolas Takes One Down

Level 3 : 100/300, 0 ante

Four players invested 2,300 a piece to see a {6-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop together. Action checked to the button, who bet 3,100. The big blind folded, as did Leo Mitchell in middle position, while Kenneth Daciolas made the call from the hijack.

The {2-Diamonds} fell on the turn, and Daciolas led out for 5,200.

"Nice runout, dealer!" the button said with a rueful smile, flinging his {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs} towards the muck. Daciolas smiled, mucking his hand face-down and dragging in the pot.

Schmiess Gets a Little Love

Level 3 : 100/300, 0 ante

"I need some North Dakota love!" Fargo, North Dakota native Barry Schmiess said upon walking into the tournament area just now, looking for a deeper run than his attempt in yesterday's Day 1b flight.

In a recent hand, Shawn Roberts checked a {j-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{4-Spades} flop from middle position, and Schmiess checked next to act. The button fired 2,000 into a pot of around 4,000, and only Schmiess called.

The {4-Clubs} turn and {3-Spades} river were checked down, and Schmiess tabled {j-Spades}{10-Hearts}. His opponent folded.
