Day 1c Completed

Levy Bags Chip Lead on Final Flight of HPT Golden Gates

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
David Levy
David Levy

The third and final starting flight of the Heartland Poker Tour Golden Gates $1,650 Main Event was the largest by a wide margin, seeing 182 entries throughout the day to bring the three-day total to 412.

When chips went into bags, 33 players remained. Of those 33, David Levy was the one atop the chip counts. Levy was one of the biggest stacks in the room for the entirety of the day, roughly doubling his stack in the first hour of play. He eclipsed 100,000 by the second break of the day and went into the dinner break after Level 9 near the top of the chip counts with just under 200,000.

Shortly after dinner, Levy won a huge pot with aces to kings to get him to 300,000. He was then seen over the last three-plus hours of the evening consistently increasing that figure, little by little until reaching a final resting point of 424,000.

Three more players finished the day with over 300,000 in chips. Michael Campbell (379,000), Slater Dean (377,000), and Danny Gonzales (306,000) will all take top 10 stacks into Sunday’s Day 2. Others to advance include Nick Pupillo (254,000), Spencer Champlin (227,000), Alex Greenblatt (184,000), Will Berry (117,000), and David Levi (105,000).

Many more were not so fortunate. Defending champion Wendy Freedman, Adrian Buckley, Will Givens, and Chris Tryba were among those to make their exits on shortly after dinner on Day 1c. Svetlana Martie and Ruth Graham also fell shy of Day 2 after the pair were eliminated in quick succession shortly before play ended for the evening.

Seventy-one players will return for Day 2 action on Sunday at 11 a.m. local time, a start that is one hour earlier than the Day 1 flights. Blinds will resume at the start of Level 16 (2,000/5,000/5,000). Day 2 levels are increased to one hour in length, with 45 of the 71 remaining players set to make it into the money, locking up at least a first-level payout of $3,297 along the way.

Campbell Finds Aces, Dusts One Off Before Bagging

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Michael Campbell raised to 10,500 from early position and the hijack went all in over the top for 45,500. Action folded back to Campbell and he quickly called.

Hijack: {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts}
Michael Campbell: {a-Hearts}{a-Diamonds}

The all-in player had found his ace-king up against Campbell's aces. The board ran out {4-Diamonds}{4-Clubs}{7-Clubs}{q-Hearts}{j-Spades} to leave the player drawing dead by the turn, making his exit just a few hands before the end of the evening.

Four More Hands

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

"Dealers! Finish the hand you're on; four more hands!"

The final 35 players have four more hands to play before bagging and tagging their chips for the end of the evening.

Mijares Eliminates Graham In Cold Fashion

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Spencer Champlin was under the gun and opened to 8,500, getting folds around to Richard Mijares, who was on the button and called. Svetlana Martie and Ruth Graham also came along from the small- and big blinds, respectively, to take action four ways postflop.

The flop came {6-Spades}{9-Spades}{2-Hearts} and action checked to Mijares, who put out a bet of 27,000. Martie folded. Graham then check-raised all in, getting a fold from Champlin.

Upon request, the dealer pulled in Mijares' bet. He saw that he had another 26,500 left to call and put in chips to do so.

Ruth Graham: {q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Richard Mijares: {k-Clubs}{10-Diamonds}

Graham was out in front with top pair, needing to fade the remaining kings and tens in the deck. However, the turn {10-Hearts} would send shivers down her spine, leaving her with just one last chance at hitting a queen or nine to improve to beyond Mijares' tens. The river {5-Clubs} stuck the dagger in her evening as the runout had been completed.

"Womp, womp, womp," Graham said, wishing the rest of the table good luck and a good night as she left the tournament area.

Meanwhile, Martie was left with around 30,000 and was eliminated from the tournament shortly thereafter. Drazen Ilich was also recently eliminated.

Top Pair Good for Abuzar

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante

Karim Abuzar had a bet of 15,000 out in front of him from the big blind into a pot that had about 50,000 in it already. The board read {7-Spades}{k-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{3-Spades}{2-Clubs} and action was on Chris Carey, who was in middle position. Carey thought for a few moments and tossed in chips to call.

Abuzar turned over {k-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a pair of kings and Carey mucked, resulting in the pot being shipped Abuzar's way.

Meanwhile, another player on the table who has amassed a sizeable stack is Jim Crouch, who has been spotted with around 230,000 with a little over 30 minutes of play left on Day 1c.

Greenblatt Wins Flip To Secure Knockout

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 3,000 ante

An all in was announced as action was back on Alex Greenblatt in middle position after opening to 7,000 and being faced with a shove from the player in the cutoff. He quickly called.

All-In Player: {7-Diamonds}{7-Hearts}
Alex Greenblatt: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}

The two found themselves in a coin flip situation prior to the runout, which came {8-Spades}{10-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{q-Diamonds}{6-Diamonds} to give Greenblatt a pair of queens and score the knockout in the process.
