Get to Know Reigning HPT Player of the Year Aaron Johnson

One of the best stories of 2018 was the incredible year of Minnesota’s Aaron Johnson. Back in May, PokerNews spoke with Johnson about leading the Player of the Year races on both Season 9 of the Mid-States Poker Tour (MSPT) and Heartland Poker Tour (HPT) Season XIV.

Over the next seven months, Johnson maintained his lead on the MSPT, and while he lost the HPT lead for a bit, he ultimately ended with it thanks to a deep run in the season finale. That allowed Johnson to become the first player to ever win POY titles on two different tours in the same year.

In doing so, Johnson won a $10,000 prize package for each tour.

“It feels amazing,” Johnson told PokerNews. “Coming into the year I certainly wanted to make a run at MSPT POY (which has always been a goal of mine), but I never imagined that I’d be in contention for multiple POY titles. To actually achieve it is unreal.”

Joseph flipped over {k-Hearts}{k-Diamonds} for two pair and his opponent's hand quickly hit the muck, pushing Joseph into the six-figure chip stack for the first time today on Day 1a.

Metz Finds a River to Send Hawkins Out

Level 8 : 400/800, 800 ante

Maurice Hawkins shoved all in for 4,800 from the cutoff and Johnathan Metz called on the button, putting Hawkins at risk of elimination.

Maurice Hawkins: {7-Spades}{4-Spades}
Johnathan Metz: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}

The flop came down {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{7-Hearts} and Hawkins took the lead with his pair of sevens. A {3-Clubs} peeled off on the turn and Metz needed to hit or Hawkins would find a double. The {9-Spades} slammed down on the river, giving Metz a straight and the pot as he sent Hawkins out of the tournament.

Hawkins took advantage of the late registration period and jumped back in.
