Chiang's Kings Hold Up

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 0 ante

Oliver Hutchings opened the action from the button with a raise to 300. Jen-Yue Chiang was in the small blind and responded with a 3-bet to 800. Hutchins paid the extra chips and the two saw a flop.

{8-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{3-Spades} is what the deck had in store. Chiang slowed down and checked to Hutchins, who bet 700. Chiang quickly called and the {6-Clubs} turn was dealt.

Chiang checked again and this time Hutchins put out a T-1,000 chip for a bet of that size. Chiang called once more before both players checked the {7-Spades} river.

Chiang was first to show and showed {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}. Hutchins could not beat the overpair and mucked his hand.

Nicola Benedetto raised to 300 from middle position and was called by Francis McClean and Gavin Sardini. The player in the big blind also made the call and four players went to the flop.

The flop came {6-Clubs}{3-Clubs}{j-Clubs} and action checked to Benedetto, who continued for 600 chips. Only Sardini made the call. The turn was the {2-Diamonds} and both players checked.

The river was the {9-Clubs}. Sardini checked and Benedetto bet 1,700, which Sardini called. Benedetto flipped over {a-Clubs}{k-Hearts} for the rivered nut flush. Sardini mucked his hand and Benedetto scooped the pot.

Winther Reads His Oponnent

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 0 ante
Orjahn Winther
Orjahn Winther

Aside from Ian Simpson, there is another avid book reader in the field in the form of Swede Orjahn Winther. Winther was spotted on Day 1a as well, scooping pots while calmly turning the pages of his book. He did not make it through yesterday, so he rejoined the fray today to try again.

On a completed board of {9-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{9-Spades}{4-Hearts}{a-Clubs} and 6,400 chips in the middle of the table, Steven Game bet 3,500 from the hijack. Winther was sitting on the button, and calmly called, barely looking up from his book.

''You win'', declared Game. Winther won indeed, as he tabled {a-Hearts}{10-Clubs} to take an early one.

Simpson Back at It

Level 1 : Blinds 100/100, 0 ante
Ian Simpson
Ian Simpson

Ian Simpson did not make it through to Day 2 on Day 1a, but that did not deter him from being right on time today on Day 1b.

He was involved in a three-way pot with Arto Mansner and Daniel Silverman. There were 900 chips in the middle on a flop that read {8-Spades}{7-Spades}{6-Diamonds}. Small blind Mansner and big blind Silverman checked to Simpson in the cutoff, who fired a pot-sized bet of 900. Only Mansner called, and the two saw a turn.

On the {5-Diamonds} turn, Simpson upped his sizing after being checked to, this time choosing for an overbet of 3,500. Mansner was not going anywhere and quickly made the call.

The {9-Diamonds} river fell and now Mansner took the initiative by leading for 7,000. Simpson snap called and got shown that Mansner was playing the straight on the board with his {4-Spades}{4-Clubs} holding. However, Simpson had a higher straight with {k-Spades}{10-Spades} and thus raked in an early sizable pot.
