On the tail end of a J10797 board, Yang Xiao Tai checked and Gavin bet 33,000 in the cutoff. Tom Dwan called on the button and Tai used one time ban k extension before she pushed forward her short stack of 40,000.

"She just called," Dwan instantly clarified when the cards were exposed. Gavin had the KQ for the king-high straight, as did Tai with the KQ. Dwan's 97 had a full house to win the pot.

Tai only had 7,000 chips left and busted the next hand.

The Chips Are Still Flying

Level 4 : Blinds 0/0, 1,500 ante

According to the tournament screens, a field of 51 entries has been culled down to 40 players so far mid-way through level four.

Xu doubled his short stack and then lost a pot to Bai Sha Huang to drop some of the profit.

Zong Tang was all-in with a short stack holding the A9 and he was up against QQ. The ace and kicker made a straight on the [Jd8s7h6hQ8c] runout.

Last but not least, one of the players sporting the The Lord Poker Tournament (TLPT) with the name Gavin was involved in a duel of shorter stacks. His KJ outflopped the table neighbour holding A9 on a board of KQ10107 to reduce the field by one.

On a flop of Q96 with around 40,000 in the middle, two bigger stacks got their chips into the middle. Zong Bao was the one at risk for 307,500 and tabled the AK for the nut flush draw. He was up against Q9 for the top two pair and instantly locked up the large double with the 10 turn to make the K river a formality.

WATCH: PokerNews Podcast #828 - Is Andrew Robl the Best Poker Player of All Time?

Andrew Robl
Andrew Robl

In the 828th episode of the PokerNews Podcast, which is sponsored by 888poker, Chad Holloway is back at Level 9 Studio in Las Vegas alongside regular co-host Mike Holtz, and for the second week in a row, Lindsey Kludt filled in for Kyna England, who does make a camera appearance from the RGPS Reno alongside ring winner Liam Gannon.

The crew then talked “Texas” Mike Moncek winning $200K on Hustler Casino Live (HCL) with an 89% VPIP while showing an entertaining $201,000 pot from the game. That led to a discussion on chopped pots, which in turn led to talk of High Stakes Poker and Andrew Robl. Is he possibly the best poker player of all time? Is he a first-ballot Hall of Famer? Those questions are answered in this episode.

Other stories covered include Nick Yunis abandoning his stack to make the birth of his first child, Chile's all-time money list, and why Lindsey has never set foot in Florida and Mike hasn't been there in 20 years. Hint — it involves alligators!

From there, Chad hosts the second edition of "Which Phil Is It?" in which Mike and Lindsey take turns answering trivia questions involving six Phils from poker — Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, Phil Laak, Phil Galfond, Phil Gordon, and Philipp Gruissem.

Finally, you'll learn about the brand new emoji options in the PokerNews live reporting updates and a new documentary featuring Lukas "Robin Poker" Robinson from the WPT Voyage.

Welcome to the Inaugural Jin Bei Cup $50,000 Short Deck Main Event

Jin Bei Palace Sihanoukville
Jin Bei Palace Sihanoukville

The three-day Jin Bei Cup is gearing up for the flagship tournament of the series at the lavish Jin Bei Palace Hotel in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. Unlike the opening $5,000 Single Day Event which was played in the traditional No-Limit Hold'em format, one of the newest and most popular poker variants will be taking the centre stage for the next two days: Short Deck.

On May 8 and 9, 2024, the inaugural Jin Bei Cup features the marquee $50,000 Short Deck Main Event which comes with a massive $5,000,000 guarantee, one of the largest guaranteed prize pools in the history of the fast-paced formats that has taken the world of poker by storm in recent years. As can be expected, some big names of the international poker circuit will be heading to the Kingdom of Cambodia to compete in this high-stakes contest.

Tom "durrrr" Dwan and Dan "Jungleman" Cates have already confirmed their attendance as has Martin Nielsen, WSOP gold bracelet winner in the Short Deck variant in 2023. They will be joined by high-stakes players and business owners to make this one of the most exciting live poker tournaments of the year.

A winner will be crowned within the next two days and the action is set to kick off at 3 p.m. local time. Most Short Deck tournaments feature a "three bullet" system whereas the 2024 Jin Bei Cup $50,000 Short Deck Main Event comes with a starting stack of 300,000 and two bullets of 150,000 each. As usual, the tables will be six-handed and the levels last 30 minutes each during the entire tournament.

Day 1 will feature a total of 12 levels during which unlimited re-entries are available. The buy-in rules have been adjusted for this event, however. As of the start of level ten, players who are eliminated can choose to purchase a one-time buy-in of two stacks and pay a registration fee of $104,000 to recommence with 600,000 in chips. Before the start of Day 2, all players can choose to add one or two stacks as well, with each stack exchanging the buy-in amount for 300,000 chips.

The late registration will close when the final day recommences on Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 2 p.m. local time. From there on, all unused bullets will be redeemed and no further entries will be allowed for the race towards crowning a winner in Cambodia. The ante at the start of Day 2 will be 15,000 with a button double ante of 30,000.

Based on the guarantee of $5,000,000, the Jin Bei Group is guaranteeing the following payouts for the top three finishers, whereas the amounts may increase if more prize money is generated.

  • First Place: $1,500,000
  • Second Place: $800,000
  • Third Place: $600,000

Furthermore, the tournament also features a 30-second shot clock throughout the entire duration as well. At the start of the event, each participant receives eight time bank extension cards and an additional five will be granted once the seven-handed final table has been reached.

Stay tuned right here on PokerNews for the high-stakes action in Cambodia for what shapes up to be one of the most exciting Short Deck tournaments of the year.
