The Key to Victory...

...is in flopping a set against an opponent's two pair, which is exactly what just happened to Darren Keyes in a hand against former chip leader Daniel 'djaniel' Mar.

Unfortunately, we caught up to the hand after the dealer was already divvying up the pot, but we can tell you that Keyes' {10-Spades}{10-Diamonds} got the best of Mar's {A-Hearts}{5-Hearts} on a board of {5-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}{A-Spades}{4-Hearts}{Q-Diamonds}.

After the hand, Keyes stacked up just over 200,000 in chips while Mar fell back down to 144,000.

Riding the Sol Train

From under the gun, Rory Graham raised to 8,000. Sol Bergren was the only caller on the button. The two players took a flop of {Q-Spades} {J-Diamonds} {9-Hearts} and checked the action to the turn, which was the {3-Spades}. Graham checked again and Bergren bet 16,000. Graham made the call.

The river was the {J-Spades}, pairing the board. Graham check-called a bet of 22,000 from Bergren after tanking for a few minutes. Bergren showed him {K-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds} for two pair, queens and jacks. Graham showed the {10-Spades} {10-Diamonds} and mucked his hand. He dropped to 66,000 chips.

"We're close to the money, I had to see it." commented Graham.

Bergren is up to 290,000.

Hand-for-hand (mano-a-mano) Play Begins

We're down to 41 players in the Playa Conchal main event, which means we're just one elimination away from the money. The dealers have been instructed to play one hand and stop. When all of the tables are done, and if no one has been eliminated the cycle repeats. You know the drill.

Here we go!

Break

The tournament clock has been paused while the remaining 41 players go on (presumably) their last 15-minute break of the day.

Just a friendly reminder that we'll be playing down to 32 tonight, and we expect the action to pick up in a big way once our 41st place finisher is eliminated.

Wald Dodges Elimination On Bubble

Sol Bergren put the pressure on Matias Bienen Wald when he moved in from the small blind against Wald's big blind. Wald only had about 12,000 chips and made the call, tabling {A-Clubs} {7-Spades}. Bergren had {6-Diamonds} {5-Hearts}.

The action was paused while all of the other tables caught up and finished. A large crowd circled the table where the all-in situation was happening before the action continued.

The board ran out {A-Spades} {9-Spades} {5-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {2-Diamonds}, doubling up Wald.

Tight Bubble Play

The short stacks have been playing very tight on the bubble trying desperately to cash. We've seen players with single-digit blind amounts in their stacks open-fold {A-Clubs} {Q-Clubs}, pocket deuces, pocket sevens, {K-Clubs} {Q-Clubs} and pocket nines. Many of the big stacks know how much these shorter stacks want to cash and are applying all the pressure they can.

We also just witnessed two players folding from the blinds. The small blind folding after having committed all but 200 of his chips. The big blind folded after having committed all but 1,500 of his chips. There was a raise to 15,000 in front of them that prompted them to duck out of the way.

Hicks Jr. Chipping Up on the Bubble

Kenny Hicks Jr. has been in this spot before and is taking full advantage of the tight bubble play that's been exhibited over the past hour or so.

In one particular hand, action folded around the table to Hicks on the button and, holding {Q-Clubs}{3-Clubs}, he opened with a raise to 9,200.

The player in the big blind (BB) made the call and the flop came down {Q-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{5-Spades}. The BB player led into Hicks with a 13,000 bet, but Hicks hung around to see the turn -- {9-Hearts}.

On 4th Street, the BB player fired again, this time making it 26,000 to play. Hicks called again, opting to take the hand to the river.

Another nine on the end ({9-Clubs}) prompted both players to knuckle the felt and move straight to the showdown.

The BB player declared he had a pair of fives, tabling {7-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}, but Hicks' pair of queens had them beat and he raked the pot, moving to 162,000 in chips.
