Brenes and the Big Stick

Humberto Brenes on Day 1
Humberto Brenes on Day 1

Humberto Brenes opened the pot to 11,000 from early position, and a player across the table three-bet shoved for 43,000 total. It was about half Brenes' remaining stack, and he cut out the call, squeaked the tongue out of his rubber shark, placed it atop the chips, and pushed it forward into the pot. His opponent was at risk, and it was a flip.

Showdown
Brenes: {A-Diamonds} {K-Spades}
Opponent: {Q-Clubs} {Q-Spades}

"Who is de king?" Brenes asked rhetorically. (A: Humberto is de king.) He then turned his attention to Mr. Opponent, making several loud comments about his garrote (stick) and drawing loud laughs from everyone nearby. Part of the meaning was lost on our admittedly poor Spanish, but we know a good dick joke when we hear one.

The {Q-Hearts} {5-Diamonds} {6-Hearts} flop was a bad start for Brenes, and he scolded the dealer, using the word garrote several more times as he puffed out his chest and sweated the last two cards. The {J-Clubs} on the turn opened up four outs for Brenes with one to come, and he was more than content to go runner-runner for the win. He asked for the ten, and the dealer obliged him with the {10-Spades} on fifth street to make his Broadway.

With one swing of his garrote, Brenes has sent another player to the rail, upping his count to about 125,000 and putting the field one elimination away from the bubble.

One Last Hand

Felipe Ramos parts with most of his stack
Felipe Ramos parts with most of his stack

While the rest of the room was waiting for hand-for-hand play to begin, Table 6 was holding up the works with a big one in progress.

It began with Felipe Ramos opening to 9,000, and he found calls in three places including Vincenzo Giannelli on the button. The flop brought {4-Diamonds} {8-Spades} {6-Clubs}, and Ramos continued out with another 13,000. Giannelli was the only caller now, and it was heads up to the {Q-Hearts} turn. Ramos asked his opponent how much he was playing (just less than 160,000 behind), then made a bet of 20,000. Giannelli called once again.

The {7-Spades} completed the board, and Ramos was first to act. He and Giannelli were close in chips, and Ramos announced his shove all in. Giannelli had 137,500 chips left now, and he spent just a few seconds making sure before announcing the big call for his own tournament life. He showed up {4-Hearts} {5-Hearts}, and Ramos sunk in his chair.

We never got to see what the man from São Paulo held. After mucking and paying off his debt, Ramos is left with just 7,000 lonely chips and a frown that is not going anywhere for now.

Felipe Ramos Bubbles LAPT São Paulo Grand Final

Felipe Ramos bubbles
Felipe Ramos bubbles

Just moments after getting knocked all the way down to 7,000 in chips, Felipe Ramos moved all in from the under-the-gun-plus-one position for 6,500. Action moved to Vincenzo Giannelli and he reraised all in for around 380,000. That knocked everyone else out of the way including the player in the big blind who folded the {A-Clubs}{J-Clubs}.

It was interesting that the big blind folded those particular cards because Giannelli tabled the {A-Spades}{A-Hearts} and Ramos the {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}. Knowing one jack was already gone, Ramos was even more on the ropes against Giannelli and facing a bubble elimination at the 2012 PokerStars.net LAPT Grand Final.

The flop came down {10-Clubs}{10-Spades}{9-Hearts} and Ramos didn't find anything he needed. The turn brought the {5-Hearts} and Ramos was left needing the case jack on the river.

The {A-Diamonds} wasn't what Ramos was looking for as Giannelli made aces full to win the hand. Ramos exited the tournament in 49th place — the official bubble — with a shrug and an "Oh well."

Fox Eliminated

With the board reading {Q-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{9-Diamonds}, Elio Fox bet 16,000 and Carlos Ibarra raised all in. Fox quickly called off his entire 76,000-chip stack with the {K-Spades}{Q-Diamonds}. Ibarra held the {9-Clubs}{7-Clubs} for two pair and the best hand at the time. The river completed the board with the {8-Spades} and Fox was left second best, sending him to the rail and moving Ibarra up to 400,000 in chips.

Talamini Gets it In Bad. Real Bad.

Level 15 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

We wish we'd seen the betting action that led to Victor Talamini's shove, but we'll tell you what we do know.

The {K-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {2-Spades} flop was already out on the table when we walked up, and there was only about 25,000 in the pot. Somehow, Talamini had gotten himself all in for 97,500 there holding just {9-Hearts} {10-Hearts}. That was especially troublesome when his opponent called him down with the crushing {A-Diamonds} {A-Clubs}, and Talamini needed two running cards to stay alive.

No problem. The turn was the {10-Diamonds}, the river was the {10-Clubs}, and it's an easy game sometimes. Talamini gets there with trips, doubling up to about 220,000 and leaving his opponent nearly felted with just about 10bb left.

The two men seem to have some good cheer between them, however, as they shook hands and embraced and shared a few friendly words after the hand.

Berlofa Out

From under the gun, Casio Pisapia raised to 8,500. Mayu Roca Uribe called from the hijack seat, Felipe Morbiducci called from the small blind and Marcelo Berlofa Antonio called from the big blind.

All four players took the {10-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{5-Spades} flop and Morbiducci bet 15,000. Berlofa raised all in for 65,500 and Pisapia folded. Uribe reraised all in for 143,000 and that sent Morbiducci into the tank. After a couple minutes, Morbiducci folded and showed that he way laying down the {A-Spades}{2-Spades}. Uribe tabled the {K-Spades}{K-Clubs} and Berlofa the {9-Clubs}{8-Hearts}.

The turn was the {10-Hearts} and the river the {2-Diamonds}. Both missed Berlofa and kept Uribe's kings in the lead. Uribe won the pot and Berlofa was eliminated.
