Chris Moneymaker Bags Big Stack on Seminole Casino Coconut Creek Day 1a

Moneymaker's Road to PSPC 2020 at the Seminole Hard Rock in South Florida saw two starting flights play out simultaneously between the Hard Rock Hollywood and Seminole Casino Coconut Creek properties. The latter, which was live reported here in the live blog, attracted 42 runners, and with 15:15 remaining in Level 14 (1,500/3,000/3,000), action halted with five players remaining.

Those five players, who will all be in the money when they return for Sunday's Day 2 at the Hard Rock Hollywood, were led by none other than 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Chris Moneymaker, who bagged a big stack of 284,000.

"It feels pretty good. I didn't have to rebuy," Moneymaker said. "I got short during the rebuy period but got a good run late. Once we got down to one table I was able to build pretty well. It was a smaller field but a lot of fun. Overall it was a pretty smooth day."

Others advancing were Sheldon Gross (222,500), Mark Cannon (174,500), Ben Robinson (135,000), and Dan Wayson (24,000).

Of course, not everyone was so lucky. Among those to fire and fall in the flight were Jorge Aristizabal, David Feigenbaum, Harry Silver, Tom Gity, and Michael Goldfarb.

Those players will have the opportunity to try again on Saturday if they so choose as Flight B will get underway at 10 a.m. local time at both properties.

Speaking of which, the Hard Rock Hollywood Day 1a flight is still in action. PokerNews will bring you end-of-day chip counts from that tournament once it wraps.

Dobson Done and Dusted

Jonathan Dobson
Jonathan Dobson

In Level 12 (1,000/2,000/2,000), Chris Moneymaker opened for 4,500 under the gun and Jonathan Dobson responded by three-betting all in for 16,000 from the button. Ben Robinson, who was in the big blind, then moved all in over the top and Moneymaker got out of the way.

Ben Robinson: {q-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}
Jonathan Dobson: {a-Clubs}{7-Spades}

Dobson's best chance at staying alive was to catch an ace, but he was left wanting as the board ran out an ace-less {j-Clubs}{10-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{k-Spades}.

"You Can't Win If You Fold"

Tom Gity
Tom Gity

In Level 8 (400/800/800), Chris Moneymaker limped under the gun and Tom Gity raised to 4,000 from the hijack. Action folded back to Moneymaker and he paused for a few beats.

"You can't win if you fold," he said before putting in a call.

When the flop came down {7-Hearts}{j-Spades}{5-Clubs}, Moneymaker checked and Gity continued for 7,000. Moneymaker wasted little time in check-raising all in for around 30,000 and Gity hit the tank.

"I guess I'll try some of your luck," Gity said before calling off for 27,200 total.

Tom Gity: {a-Spades}{q-Spades}
Chris Moneymaker: {10-Diamonds}{10-Clubs}

Moneymaker was ahead but Gity went with his two overs. The {8-Spades} turn gave Gity a spade flush draw and unfortunately for Moneymaker it came in when the {9-Spades} spiked on the river.

"Sorry, buddy," Gity offered.

"I've still got a little life left in me," Moneymaker said with a smile as he counted out the chips. He was left with 3,000 after the hand.

An Orbit with Chris Moneymaker

In Level 3 (100/200/200), Chris Moneymaker was sitting with a stack of 21,500 and we decided to spend an orbit with the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champ.

Hand #1 (Hijack): Three players limped and Moneymaker folded his hand.

Hand #2 (Lojack): After the under-the-gun player limped, Moneymaker raised to 700. The player in the big blind called, as did the limper, and it was three-way action to the {6-Diamonds}{k-Clubs}{4-Hearts} flop. Two checks saw Moneymaker continue for 1,000 and that did the trick as both his opponents folded.

"I had a pair," Moneymaker offered.

Hand #3 (Early Position): The under-the-gun player raised to 800 and Moneymaker, who was next to act, made the call. Four other players called, including Mark Cannon from the big blind, and it was six-way action to the {9-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{10-Spades} flop.

Everyone checked, the dealer burned and turned the {k-Hearts}, and Cannon led out for 400. The next three players called ending with Moneymaker, while the other two players got out of the way.

When the {2-Spades} completed the board on the river, Cannon bet 1,000 and the under-the-gun player called. Moneymaker and the other player in the hand both got out of the way and Cannon rolled over the [6s7h[ for the flopped bottom end of the straight. It was good as his opponent mucked.

Hand #4 (UTG): Moneymaker folded.

Hand #5 (Big Blind): The under-the-gun player raised to 600, a middle-position played three-bet all in for 3,400, and the next player to act jammed over the top for 10,000. Action folded back to the UTG player and he got out of the way.

Player A: {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}
Player B: {a-Spades}{k-Clubs}

The board ran out {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{3-Spades}{j-Clubs} and the players chopped it up.

Hand #6 (Small Blind): A player in middle position opened for 900 and Cannon called from the hijack, which inspired Moneymaker to fold from the small blind. The player in the big called and it was three-way action to the {q-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{10-Clubs} flop. The big blind checked, the original raiser continued for 2,200, and that cleared the field. The winner flashed the {k-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds} before pulling in the pot.

Hand #7 (Button): Cannon limped from middle position and Richard Leger raised to 700 from the hijack. Moneymaker folded, Cannon called, and the flop came down {j-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{q-Clubs}. Cannon check-called a bet of 1,300 and then check-folded to one of 5,000 from Leger on the {9-Hearts} river.

Hand #8 (Cutoff): In the final hand of the orbit, Cannon limped from early position and Leger did the same. The next player to act then raised to 1,100 and Moneymaker, as well as the rest of the players, folded.

Not much action from Moneymaker in that orbit. For now, he seems content to patiently grind.

Moneymaker's Road to PSPC Goes Through South Florida!

Platinum Pass
Platinum Pass

This weekend, the Moneymaker's Road to PSPC goes through not one, but two Seminole Hard Rock properties!

Today, the $360 buy-in, $100K GTD Main Event will get underway at both the Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood and Seminole Coconut Creek properties. The winner of the tournament, which will be determined on Sunday, will walk away with an added $30,000 Platinum Pass Package to attend the PSPC hosted in Barcelona, Spain in August 2020.

The Day 1a flights get underway at both properties at 10 a.m., while Day 1b will follow at the same time on Saturday. The surviving players from all flights at both venues will then combine at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood for Sunday's Day 2, which will get underway at 11 a.m. All players who make Day 2 are in the money.

Players will start with 20,000 in tournament chips and levels last 30 minutes. Late registration and re-entries are available until the start of Level 9.

One special factor about today's tournament is the fact that the man himself, 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event champ Chris Moneymaker, is in action and rubbing elbows with participants. It's not everyday one gets the chance to play with a Poker Hall of Famer and win their way into one of poker's most-anticipated tournaments for a modest $360!
