HK$16,500 Main Event

Day 1b Started

The 2018 Oriental Poker Championship HKD $16,500 Main Event Live Coverage

It's time for Day 1b of the Main Event
It's time for Day 1b of the Main Event

Ready for another round? Good. So are we. After yesterday’s culmination of the High Roller as well as Day 1a of the Main Event, today the scene is set for Day 1b of the HK$16,500 Oriental Poker Championship 2018 grand spectacle.

There were 142 players in total yesterday, and when the chips bags were brought out 11 40-minute levels later, just 66 remained. Another 11 levels are on the cards today, and everyone who plays will be chasing the 186,300 stack of end-of-Day 1a chip leader Shun Yan Feng. You can view all of the Day 1a chip counts here.

As the High Roller is now over (Ivan Leow took that down late last night for HK$1,442,300, or US$183,740), you can expect to see all of the big names from that take a shot in the Main Event today. After all, there’s a healthy HK$5million guaranteed prize pool to play for.

Should anyone bust today, there’s always the Turbo Day 1c flight which kicks off at 6pm today. This event has unlimited re-entries, so expect some second, even third bullets to be fired later on.

When play ends today, we’ll know the full Day 2 (Saturday) field and seat draw. From there, Sunday is Day 3, and the whole thing will come to an end on Monday’s Final Day. Here’s a look at the Day 1 structure (it’s worth noting that levels increase from 40 minutes to 60 minutes from Day 2 onwards):

Zhao Starts As He Means To Go On

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Zhonglin Zhao has kicked his Main Event off with a small win. He opened to 300 from the cutoff and was immediately three-bet to 1,500 by the button. When it folded back to him he'd make the call, before check-calling a 2,500 continuation bet on a {10-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{3-Clubs} flop. Both checked the {10-Clubs} turn which paired the board, leading to the {j-Clubs} river.

Zhao now took the betting lead for 3,500, and his opponent thought for a while before folding. Zhao showed he'd rivered a full house with his {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}, and raked in the chips.

Boarding Passes, Please

OPC Main Event 1B Queue
OPC Main Event 1B Queue

A huge throng of players have just entered the Poker King Club with seat tickets in hand. It's almost like a scene from an airport, where the staff have just announced a new group of flyers can now board the plane. There's still a healthy queue of folks waiting for their seats too, so even though the tournament screens currently say 72 entries, the actual figure is much higher.

There are some recognisable faces among the throng. Malaysia's Victor Chong has just sat down, fresh from his sixth-place finish in the High Roller for HK$220,000. The blue hair of Raiden Kan has also caught attention, as has the return of Xixiang Luo, who busted yesterday and is back for another shot.

Hong Gets A Double

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Xuechun Hong's Main Event must have got off to a rocky start in Level 1. However, Level 2 has proved kinder, and he's just doubled up to 38,000.

Picking up the action on a {j-Hearts}{8-Clubs}{a-Diamonds} flop, Hong had checked before a player led for 1,000 and another called. Hong then three-bet to 4,000, and after one fold and one call it went heads-up to a {10-Hearts} turn. Hong continued to fire for 7,100 which was called, and then jammed all-in for 7,350 on the {6-Spades} river.

His opponent - who for now will remain nameless - called quickly, and Hong almost looked like he was ready to muck. Eventually though he'd show his {j-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds} for a flopped two pair, and his opponent would muck, dropping to just 5,000.
