Koppel Runs Into the Flopped Nuts; Matakis Takes Huge Chip Lead

Level 12 : 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Ian Matakis
Ian Matakis

Jared Koppel was just seen getting up from his seat and exiting the tournament area, wishing Ian Matakis a nice hand as he left. Matakis was kind enough to recount the hand, saying that opened to 4,000 from the hijack and received a call from Koppel.

The two went heads up to a flop of {4-}{7-}{5-} (rainbow) and Koppel checked. Matakis made a continuation-bet of 4,000 and Koppel called. The turn came {q-Spades} and Koppel continued with another bet of 21,000. Matakis called.

The river fell {2-} and Koppel shoved for his remaining chips. Matakis called.

Jared Koppel: {q-Clubs}{8-Clubs}
Ian Matakis: {8-Spades}{6-Spades}

Koppel's top pair of queens was no good versus Matakis' flopped straight and he hit the rail in tenth place, bringing the tournament down to nine players for a split second, resulting in the field being condensed down to one table.

However, Cody Espeseth has fired again upon seeing the tables breaking. As a result, the final table is now being played ten-handed with around 40 minutes left in the registration period. An updated redraw will be provided shortly for the final table.

Matakis Picks off Bloomberg

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

Ian Matakis completed his small blind upon action being folded to him and Mark Bloomberg checked his option to take action heads up to a flop of {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}. Matakis checked to Bloomberg, who bet 4,000.

The turn came {a-Clubs} and Matakis checked again. Bloomberg put out another bet of 6,000 and Matakis made the call.

The river fell {4-Spades} and Matakis checked once more. Bloomberg fired a third barrel for 10,000 to send Matakis into the tank. Thirty seconds later, he put out two T5,000 chips to call.

"Good call," said Bloomberg, tabling {5-Hearts}{4-Hearts} for a missed flush draw that became a pair of fours on the river. Matakis showed {q-Diamonds}{6-Hearts} for a pair of queens and took down the pot, bringing him over 100,000 in chips with less than 10 minutes left in Level 11.

Peppe Cooked

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante
Vic Peppe
Vic Peppe

There was around 8,600 in the middle from preflop action between Ian Matakis in the cutoff, and Vic Peppe, who was in the big blind. The flop came {9-Diamonds}{q-Spades}{6-Spades} and Peppe checked. Matakis bet 6,000 and Peppe thought for a few seconds before putting in chips to call.

The turn came {j-Hearts} and Peppe jammed in his last 28,900. Matakis quickly called.

Vic Peppe: {q-}{10-}
Ian Matakis: {q-Hearts}{9-Hearts}

Peppe's had flopped top pair and turned an open-ended straight draw prior to committing the last of his chips. However, he found himself up against Matakis' two pair and was in need of hitting one of the ten cards in the deck that would keep him alive. He was unable to do so as the river fell {5-Spades}, leaving him out of chips as he got up from his seat, congratulated Matakis on a nice hand, and wished the rest of the table good luck before exiting the tournament area, bringing the number of remaining players to 11 in the process.

Matakis Fires Away

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

There was 9,300 in the middle on a board of {9-Clubs}{5-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{3-Diamonds} with heads-up action between Michael Williams in the big blind and Ian Matakis, who was on the button. Williams checked. Matakis bet 5,500 and Williams put in chips to call.

The river came {q-Clubs} and Williams checked again. Matakis put out a stack of chips that looked to be 14,500, and Williams thought for a few moments before giving up contention of the hand and sending his cards to the muck.

Petronack Hits Six Figures

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 1,600 ante

There was over 35,000 in the middle on a board of {6-Clubs}{q-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{3-Clubs} with heads up action between Jeff Petronack in the small blind and Daniel Schmidtknecht, who was in the hijack. Both players checked.

The river came {4-Hearts} and Petronack threw out a bet of 15,000. Schmidtknecht went into the tank for about a minute and then sent his cards to the muck, bringing him below the 100,000-chip mark with Petronack finding himself having eclipsed that same mark with the recently-won pot.
