"Birthday Boys" Solomons and Festa Top Day 1b of the 2026 APC Tanzania Main Event

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Banks Solomons

The second of three starting days for the inaugural edition of the African Poker Championship Main Event in Tanzania has wrapped up with 16 players out of 46 entries advancing to Day 2. They are joining the 23 survivors of the previous flight, which had attracted 51 entries to bring the overall tally to 98 entries. That brings the $1,000 buy-in nearly half-way to meeting the $200,000 guarantee at the Le Grande Casino in Dar Es Salaam with one more starting day to follow on Friday, October 2, 2026.

However, the late registration and re-entry period will be open for another five levels on Day 2 before the final field size will be set.

South Africa's Franco Da Matta was singing "happy birthday" multiple times after the frantic action at the tables had propelled Banks Solomons (645,000) and Mattia Festa (580,500) to the top of the leaderboard, most notably during the final two levels of the night.

The fiesta for Festa continued after his triumph in the $3,000 APC High Roller the previous day as he ran up one starting stack after six levels to nearly six, while Panayiotis Giannakopoulos went from chip leader to bustout during the very same period. Da Matta himself would have liked to bag up more chips but will have to do with 128,000 after a roller coaster day.

As the sole player from the nearby island of Mauritius, Patrice Ah-Nien finished strong and bagged up 570,500 while Imran Bhojani (545,000) also advanced with a larger stack than the Day 1a chip leader Todd Hellyar. It was the logical result of an incredibly exhilarating first two levels that saw multiple all-in showdowns in rapid fashion.

During the first ten minutes, Harold Brooks had already doubled up his stack before losing most of his stack in a three-way all-in when two flush draws collided with middle pair.

These two hands may perhaps not even make the top five of the most insane hands the second flight witnessed, as the craziness continued without too much remorse. Early front runner Dan Zvonaru then lost another memorable three-way all-in that sent Solomons to the top of the leaderboard, where he stayed for almost the entire remainder of the day - this was still in level one, by the way.

In the second level, Le Grande Casino owner Costa Giannakopoulos went from hero to zero in two hands when his pocket aces were cracked by the pocket kings of Solomons.

His son Panayiotis Giannakopoulos was running riot at the tables and went from short stack to near chip leader, even taking the overall lead on the live stream table after the dinner break thereafter.

The most memorable all-in showdown produced a triple knockout for Bhojani before Zvonaru then predicted a "straight flush in progress" on the flop which indeed became reality for Rajeev Poonhath.

Bsiri ran with ace-king for top two pair into the set of kings of Ivan Govorov but came back with a vengeance to score multiple knockouts en route to bagging up a big stack. Bhojani added to his tally with another double KO before Giannakopoulos went from first in chips at the start of level seven to the rail.

It was that kind of day, as the chips went flying left and right with barely any dull moment as the Day 1b field was cut into almost one third in extraordinary fashion. Whether or not the final starting day will produce the same fireworks remains to be seen.

It is Also Festa's Birthday

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Xuecheng Mi
Xuecheng Mi

Xuecheng Mi jammed at the wrong time preflop as Mattia Festa snapped him off for a very reason.

"Happy birthday," Franco Da Matta started singing and APC founder Marc Joseph asked "whose birthday is it?"

Festa replied "me" as his A♥A♣ were up against Mi's A♠K♣.

The K♥Q♥2♦A♦10♥ board sent Mi to the rail.

Prinsloo Eventually Runs Out of Chips; Giannakopoulos Follows

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Theuns Prinsloo
Theuns Prinsloo

Theuns Prinsloo was all-in for only 10,000 out of the blinds and Panayiotis Giannakopoulos called as both already exposed their cards. Prinsloo's 10♣6♦ and the K♥4♥ for Giannakopoulos.

There was just one problem. Ioannis Panagiopopoulos was still to act and then called, knowing both cards. The two active players checked down the A♠Q♠J♠A♣7♠ board and Panagiopopoulos won the pot with the A♦10♠ for the flush.

Soon after the field was balanced to only three tables of six players each as Giannakopoulos had disappeared. Franco Da Matta was jokingly singing happy birthday to Banks Solomons in the one seat, who gave a brief rundown of what had happened.

Giannakopoulos triple-barreled through a ten-high board with seven-high for a missed gutshot and ran right into Solomons' pocket tens for tens full.

Bsiri and Festa Soar to Large Stacks

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Raphael Bsiri
Raphael Bsiri

On the river of a K♣Q♥9♠2♠7♦ river, Panayiotis Giannakopoulos checked and then faced a bet of 100,000 by Mattia Festa. He spread all of his time banks out in front and very reluctantly called to then muck versus A♦K♦.

In the meanwhile on table three there was a three-way all-in. Daniel van der Berg had reraised to 10,000 preflop and Praful Patwa then jammed. Raphael Bsiri reraised to more than 200,000 and van der Berg called all-in behind.

Praful Patwa: J♠10♣ All in
Daniel van der Berg: A♦Q♥ All in
Raphael Bsiri: A♣K♣

"Don't worry, there will be a ten on the turn," Bsiri told Patwa but the ten already came on the 10♦5♣3♦ flop. The K♠ turn put Bsiri back into the lead and the 2♥ river was a blank to send two to the rail.

Bhojani Scoops Another Double Knockout

Level 6 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Andreas Hadjipaschali
Andreas Hadjipaschali

Muzamil Gothey raised and Imran Bhojani just called one seat over. Mr King also flatted and Andreas Hadjipaschali then three-bet to 13,000. Gothey got out of the way and Bhojani then squeezed to 51,000. Mr King called all-in for 45,700 in the cutoff and Hadjipaschali on the button then jammed for 139,100 total.

"I guess there is no way out," Bhojani said and tossed in calling chips.

Mr King: J♦J♣ All in
Andreas Hadjipaschali: A♣10♠ All in
Imran Bhojani: Q♣Q♥

The 8♦7♣5♥8♠2♣ board was clean for Bhojani to knock out two opponents this time.

Bsiri Eliminated by Govorov

Level 5 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Raphael Bsiri
Raphael Bsiri

With some 67,000 in the middle to the A♥K♥9♥ flop, Raphael Bsiri checked. Ivan Govorov bet 15,000 and Bsiri then jammed for 92,900. After getting an exact count, Govorov called and the cards were tabled.

Raphael Bsiri: A♣K♠ All in
Ivan Govorov: K♣K♦

Bsiri sighed upon getting shown the bad news and found no escape on the 2♠ turn and 8♥ river.

Ernstzen Runs Kings Into Aces

Level 5 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Marlon Ernstzen
Marlon Ernstzen

There were 5,000 out in front of Marlon Ernstzen and he then faced a reraise to 10,000 by Dusko Radosavljevic. The shove followed and Radosavljevic snap-called.

Marlon Ernstzen: K♥K♣ All in
Dusko Radosavljevic: A♠A♦

The whole table groaned and the setup brought no help to Ernstzen on the 7♠5♥4♦J♥10♠ board.

"Straight Flush in Progress"

Level 4 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Rajeev Poonhath
Rajeev Poonhath

In four-way action to the 8♦7♦6♠ flop there was already some chatter as Franco Da Matta wanted to see a jack-jack-eight flop for his favorite hand to hit a full house. Instead, it came eight-high and Dan Zvonaru jokingly replied to Da Matta with a "straight flush in progress".

The action checked to Panayiotis Giannakopoulos from under the gun and he bet 8,500. Da Matta on the button and Rajeev Poonhath in the big blind called. On the 5♦ turn they all checked to the 4♦ river. Poonhath now bet 25,000 and Giannakopoulos called, Da Matta sigh-folded.

Poonhath smashed the 7♠ on the felt first followed by the ... 6♦ for the straight flush indeed!

Triple Knockout for Bhojani

Level 4 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Imran Bhojani
Imran Bhojani

On a four-way flop of 6♠5♠2♣, Imran Bhojani in the big blind check-raised to 21,000. Behind him, Harold Brooks called and Ak Ak then moved all-in.

Costa Giannakopoulos was in a brief tank and then said "I guess it is you or me" before he called all-in. Bhojani went all-in over the top with the largest stack and Brooks called all-in to create a four-way showdown.

"I got the nuts," Bhojani said when the cards were revealed.

Ak Ak: 8♣7♣ All in
Costa Giannakopoulos: K♦3♦ All in
Harold Brooks: 8♥7♥ All in
Imran Bhojani: 4♣3♣

"If it comes flush, you are fucked," Ak Ak told Bhojani who asked "which flush" as there was only one club out there.

The 7♠ turn didn't change a whole lot nor did the J♠ river. None of the players had a spade in their hand and Bhojani scored a triple knockout.

He rated the hand eleven out of ten and pointed to his "lucky tea" as reason to success.

Giannakopoulos Soars to Massive Stack

Level 3 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos

Marko Nortje raised to 2,000 and Rajeev Poonhath called before Panayiotis Giannakopoulos then squeezed to massive 70,000.

When Nortje was in the tank, Giannakopoulos said "you know what it is". Nortje eventually called all-in for less and Poonhath folded.

Marko Nortje: A♠7♠ All in
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos: A♣K♦

The Q♥9♠3♠ flop was a sweat, but the 6♣ turn and 9♦ river brought no help for Nortje.

What followed was a three-bet pot between Giannakopoulos and Dan Zvonaru which led to the 9♣7♥6♦ flop. Giannakopoulos check-raised from 5,500 to 16,500 and called Zvonaru's shove.

Panayiotis Giannakopoulos: 8♦5♥ All in
Dan Zvonaru: Q♥Q♣

"Well done," Zvonaru exclaimed and then added "I am dead".

The 8♥ turn made a split pot possible but the J♠ river brought no miracle. Both stacks were counted and Giannakopoulos doubled for 162,500.

Down to around 21,000, Zvonaru three-bet jammed from the small blind and Franco Da Matta called.

Dan Zvonaru: J♠8♠ All in
Franco Da Matta: A♣K♦

"Oh shit, that's my favourite hand ... even the suits," Da Matta said when looking at the suited jack of Zvonaru and the table chuckled. Sure enough the jack came on the J♥5♥4♣5♠2♣ board for Zvonaru to double.
