Sami Matar Runs Bad in Flips But Good at the Tables on Day 1c of the $1,000 APC Tanzania Main Event

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Sami Matar

The third and final starting day of the first-ever 2026 African Poker Championship Tanzania $1,100 Main Event nearly doubled the overall field size thanks to 95 entries, which boosted the attendance to 193 entries. This puts the crown jewel of the festival at the Le Grande Casino in Dar Es Salaam on the verge of meeting and surpassing the $200,000 guarantee and another five levels of late registration and re-entries on Day 2 open the doors to increase the prize pool further.

Sami Matar may be the most unlucky player in the room for the flip satellites for a Main Event as he is now zero for 15, but he made up for that with the largest tally on Day 1c and second-largest overall after bagging up an impressive 631,000 in chips. Two players from South Africa follow behind in Tutu Russon (517,500) and Ryan James (483,000).

Likewise, the Springboks Benjamin "Guppie" Lingenfelder Jr (391,5090) and Gavin Sardini (386,000) made it through with very healthy stacks inside of the top ten for this flight as well.

Several other notables such as Steven Radloff (275,000), Harold Brooks (263,000), Muaaz Gan (249,000), Marko Nortje (222,000) and Cliton Taliwanth (157,500) all advanced, too. They are joined by South Africa's latest and youngest WSOP gold bracelet winner Aidan Jacobs whereas two time Poker Players Championship winner Dan "Jungleman" Cates appeared near the end of level seven in the tournament area. He lost his first stack on the live stream table and re-entered, then made quads and bagged up 139,500.

Among those who came and left without anything to show for were Panayiotis Giannakopoulos, Rajeev Poonhath, Divan Van Wyk, Kumi Pather, and Tim Feng to name all but a few. Ioannis Panagiopopoulos advanced with a short stack today and will carry over his larger tally from Day 1b as the only contender with multiple bags across the three flights.

That brings the figure of survivors from each of the three starting flights to 80 out of a field of 193 and they will return at noon local time on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Recommencing blinds in level nine will be 1,500-2,500 with a blind ante of 2,500 and another five levels of late registration and re-entry remain.

The action on the final starting day was more timid to begin with and there was actually no casualty in the first level of play, which stands in stark contrast to the frantic opening stages on Day 1b. Among the first to bust was JP Le Roux when he saw his pocket aces cracked by fellow South African Steven Radloff.

Vietnam's Tome Dinh fired multiple shells without success and one of his first entries went down in flames against Sardini. Eventual chip leader Matar was also among the casualties who had to re-enter after his combo-draw with a gutshot and flush draw failed to crack the set of local player Ak Ak.

Two further memorable three-way showdowns reduced the field further. Andreas Hadjipaschali got it in with the best of it holding a set of sixes against two flush draws, but both Ak Ak and Tutu Russon improved to a flush. Middle set was no good for Maria De Gouveia when the flush draw of Magani instantly got there on the turn.

In the penultimate level of the night. Lukasz Jedrzejczyk was on the brink of becoming a big stack when his ace-king was up against the ace-queen of Arnas Grygalis but a queen on the turn left the player from Poland without chips and a bad beat story to share.

Ultimately, more than half of the field was sent to the rail in eight levels of 60 minutes each and they still have the chance to re-enter throughout the first five levels of Day 2.

The PokerNews live reporting team will be back as of noon local time for Day 2, which is slated to play down to the money bubble and beyond in the first-ever African Poker Championship Main Event in Tanzania.

Grygalis Bad Beats Jedrzejczyk

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Lukasz Jedrzejczyk
Lukasz Jedrzejczyk

Lukasz Jedrzejczyk raised to 5,000 in the cutoff and Nathan Pan called in the small blind. Arnas Grygalis then three-bet big to 27,000 in the big blind for Jedrzejczyk to push all-in. Pan sigh-folded and Grygalis went into the tank.

"Ace king or kings," the Lithuanian said after he had asked for a count on the shove, which was for 177,000 total. After using a time bank, Grygalis called.

Lukasz Jedrzejczyk: A♣K♦ All in
Arnas Grygalis: A♦Q♣

The J♥4♥2♥Q♥5♣ board delivered the bad beat. Grygalis' stack was more than 180,000 and that sent Jedrzejczyk to the rail in the final level of the night.

Lingenfelder Jr tabled the K♠K♦ and Dinh mucked his J♦6♦ with a big sigh. He was down to less than ten blinds thereafter and busted.

Maria de Gouveia

On a flop of K♦J♠3♦, the chips went into the middle when Tianyi Wen bet 11,500 and Maria De Gouveia raised to 26,000 as Alfred Magani pushed all-in thereafter. Wen called all-in and De Gouveia also came along to create the largest pot of the day so far.

Tianyi Wen: A♦K♠ All in
Alfred Magani: J♦8♦ All in
Maria De Gouveia: J♣J♥

The flopped set of De Gouveia fell behind on the 2♦ turn and the 8♠ river failed to pair the board. Wen was knocked out and Magani doubled off De Gouveia for 141,300. Down to 14,100, she bowed out very shortly after.

Hadjipaschali Falls In Three-Way All-In

Level 5 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante
Andreas Hadjipaschali
Andreas Hadjipaschali

There were only 11,500 in the middle to the 6♥5♥3♦ flop when Ak Ak checked. Tutu Russon bet 7,000 and Andreas Hadjipaschali called. Ak Ak then moved all-in and Russon called, Hadjipaschali also called all-in as well.

Tutu Russon: K♥Q♥ All in
Andreas Hadjipaschali: 6♠6♣ All in
Ak Ak: J♥9♥

The J♠ turn changed nothing much and the flush then arrived on the 8♥ river. Russon tripled up for 80,700 and Hadjipaschali was eliminated in the much smaller side pot by Ak Ak.

Giannakopoulos Misses Flush Draw Against Sardini

Level 4 : Blinds 400/800, 800 ante
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos

The next fireworks over on table two unfolded on a flop of Q♦7♦6♣ when Panayiotis Giannakopoulos check-jammed into a bet of 15,000 by Gavin Sardini. The latter reluctantly called and they flipped over the cards.

Panayiotis Giannakopoulos: K♦8♦ All in
Gavin Sardini: Q♠J♠

The Q♥ turn took away some outs for Giannakopoulos and he had to re-enter after the 3♣ river.

"Thank You and Please Come Again"

Level 3 : Blinds 300/500, 500 ante
Sami Matar
Sami Matar

The fireworks unfolded on a flop of 7♥6♠2♠ when Sami Matar was all-in from the button against Ak Ak and both fired verbal dabs at each other.

Sami Matar: 8♠4♠ All in
Ak Ak: 6♣6♦

Ak Ak wished his opponent to hit the flush with the 7♠ which would given him an unbeatable full house. Matar said the flush would come on the river when he bricked the J♥ turn but the Q♦ river was another blank.

"Thank you ... please come again but not this table," Ak Ak grinned.

Three ways with 2,200 each invested to the 10♣9♦6♥ flop, Tome Dinh bet 3,000 and was called by Panayiotis Giannakopoulos and Gavin Sardini. The Q♠ turn was checked and Dinh jammed the 3♣ river for 20,000. Giannakopoulos folded and Sardini called after brief consideration.

Dinh tabled the J♣10♠ but Sardini had that beat with the Q♥8♠ for top pair.

Radloff Cracks Aces to Bust Le Roux

Level 2 : Blinds 200/400, 400 ante
JP Le Roux
JP Le Roux

In a three-bet pot with 4,000 by JP Le Roux, multiple callers led to the 6♦6♥5♦ flop and Harold Brooks bet 7,600. Steven Radloff called and Le Roux then made it 20,000 to go, only Radloff called.

On the K♥ turn, Radloff pushed all-in and Le Roux called.

JP Le Roux: A♦A♣ All in
Steven Radloff: 7♠6♠

The 9♠ river changed nothing and the stacks were counted. Radloff's 71,600 covered versus 70,500 to knock out Le Roux.

"I folded pocket nines," Brooks mentioned in the table chat.
