Todd Hellyar Leads 23 Survivors of Opening Flight in Inaugural APC Tanzania Main Event

Level 8 : Blinds 1,000/2,000, 2,000 ante
Todd Hellyar
Todd Hellyar

The inaugural Main Event of the newly founded African Poker Championship has kicked off today at Le Grande Casino in Dar es Salaam with the first of three flights attracting a field of 51 entries. With a buy-in of $1,000, the crown jewel of the 2026 APC Tanzania series features a $200,000 guarantee, and plenty of poker enthusiasts from near and far are expected to join the action within the next three days.

After eight 60-minute levels, the field was cut by more than half, and 23 players bagged chips. Leading the way is Australia's Todd Hellyar, who has only a single live poker result from Tanzania to his name, according to The Hendon Mob. Hellyar bagged up 513,000 in chips and had even more chips at his disposal when he cracked aces in a three-way all-in.

A trio of players behind him is separated by ten big blinds, including Shaun Govender (345,500), Xianbin Li (332,000) and Biru Asefa (322,500). South Africa's Mark Da Matta was on his way out for an early exit but spun up a severe short stack all the way to 300,000 for an overnight top-five stack.

The series is powered by the Monster Jam Poker Tour (MJPT) and founded by Marc Joseph, so it comes as no surprise that many players from South Africa made the short trip to Tanzania. Three of the country's most experienced players all advanced in the top ten for Day 1a, including Jaryd Jardien (293,000), Sugen Singh (274,500) and Menesh Keshav (260,500). Further down on the leaderboard are newcomers such as Jonathan Hyman (217,000) and Daniel Scott (153,500).

Among the last players to bust during the final hands of the night was Harold Brooks, who already has several live poker titles under his belt in South Africa. The sole participant from the island nation of Mauritius Patrice Ah-Nien, also failed to turn his first attempt into a bag, as did Gavin Sardini and Banks Solomons.

They all have another two starting days to enter the crown jewel of the festival on October 1 and 2, 2026. That will likely include many of the finalists of today's $3,000 High Roller, which drew a field of 65 entries to create a prize pool of $163,800. More than 1,000 viewers watched the conclusion of the final table on the MJPT YouTube channel, with the action heads-up between Mattia Festa and Obi Zhang at the time of writing.

Stay tuned for the exclusive PokerNews live updates from Tanzania for the remainder of the Main Event with Day 1b set to kick off tomorrow at 2 p.m. local time.

Li Wins Big Pot Off Hyman

Level 7 : Blinds 1,000/1,500, 1,500 ante
Xianbin Li
Xianbin Li

So far, everything had been smooth sailing for Jonathan Hyman but that all changed in a larger pot against Xianbin Li.

He check-called the A♦J♥2♣10♣ turn for 40,000 and then checked the 5♣ on the river. Li bet 70,000 and Hyman called with a single chip after burning through two time banks. Li tabled the A♣6♣ and Hyman replied "that is the most outrageous river" right before he exposed the A♥Q♥.

Muhammad Yasir was knocked out from that table right after. He was short for a while after doubling Anjan Mulji and could never recover.

Hellyar Storms Into Huge Lead

Jaco Mouton raised to 5,000 and Alvin Pillay then jammed for 16,000. The action folded to Todd Hellyar who gave it some thought, which was interrupted by Mouton's table chat. Hellyar then called and Mouton opted to flat behind.

On the 8♣4♦2♠ flop, Hellyar check-raised from 12,000 to 33,000 before Mouton reraised for most of his chips. Hellyar pushed all-in and Mouton called to create a pot of more than half a million.

Jaco Mouton: A♠A♣ All in
Todd Hellyar: 4♥4♣

Mouton had just one out which never came on the 6♣ turn and 10♦ river, Pillay had been drawing dead on the turn already.

Alvin Pillay raised to 4,000 and the action folded to Jaco Mouton in the big blind, who grabbed his chips and plunked them into the middle.

"How much is it?" Pillay asked and Mouton replied "I don't know, I just grabbed the chips ... ." When Pillay asked if Mouton wanted the call, the latter replied "I don't know what I am doing". The table chatter worked as Pilaly eventually called.

Jaco Mouton: Q♦Q♠ All in
Alvin Pillay: J♦J♠

"I gonna hit a jack," Pillay predicted but instead, Mouton made quads on the Q♥6♣3♣6♠Q♣ runout.

On a flop of K♠J♣2♥, the chips went into the middle between Jean Pierre Sgiaravello and Daniel Scott with the former at risk.

Jean Pierre Sgiaravello: K♣J♥ All in
Daniel Scott: 2♦2♣

Sgiaravello needed a king or jack but that was all moot after the 2♠ turn when Scott made quads to render the 10♦ river a formality. Gavin Sardini also busted after he had come back from the break as one of the shortest stacks.

Keshav Sends Raza to the Rail

Ali Raza in the cutoff limped in and Menesh Keshav raised to 4,000 on the button. Luqman A in the big blind flatted to Raza then jammed for 20,400, which Keshav called. Luqman A declared fold and flashed his 6♣6♥.

Ali Raza: Q♣Q♦ All in
Menesh Keshav: A♦A♣

The two traps may have almost backfired when the J♠9♠6♦ flop came, which would have given Luqman A a set. No further drama ensued on the 3♦ turn and K♦ river for Raza to bust.

Yasir Double Leaves Giannakopoulos Short

Level 5 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

In a four-way limped pot to the A♠K♣J♠ flop, the action escalated when Jonathan Hyman check-raised to 18,000 in the small blind. Muhammad Yasir then pushed all-in for 96,200 and Gavin Sardini got out of the way.

Panayiotis Giannakopoulos was on the button and in the tank when he said "fuck it, fuck it, fuck it" moments before piling in his 116,000. Hyman asked for a count on the all-ins and then folded, flashing the K♦J♥ for the bottom two pair.

"That's not a good time for you to come," Giannakopoulos exclaimed when his father Costa had looked over to see what was happening.

Muhammad Yasir: Q♥10♦
Panayiotis Giannakopoulos: 3♠2♠

The flush draw bricked on the J♣ turn and 7♣ river, though, Hyman would have knocked out two opponents.

Panayiotis Giannakopoulos bumped it up to 12,000 preflop on the button and Muhammad Yasir called from the big blind.

Moussa Soililti as the initial raiser said he wanted to raise but since the action changed, he could only call as they headed to the Q♥10♣4♠ flop as they all checked. On the 10♦ turn, Yasir checked and Soililti bet 10,500 which only Giannakopoulos called.

After the K♦ river, Soililti bet 30,000 and his opponent then jammed after he had previously lost some chips. The quick call followed and Giannakopoulos jokingly said he had a full house while vividly waving his 9♣9♠ in front.

It was no good, as he didn't get Soililti to fold the A♣K♠ for kings and tens. Giannakopoulos re-entered and randomly got the exact same seat.
