Facing an early position raise, Ela Kubincova called out of the big blind as the pair went heads up to an flop. Kubincova check-called, with the scariest card in the deck, the rolling off on the turn. This seemed to freeze the action, with both players checking the turn, as well as the river.
Kubincova quickly rolled over for top set, while the origina raiser showed with an audible sigh, as this wasn't the first time this happened to him today! As she stacks up a 195,000-chip stack, Kubincova is now among our chipleaders.
Since the closure of late registration, our short stacks have been busting out left and right in an attempt to stay alive and run up a stack. We're down to 205 runners, which means there have been 55 exits in the last 15 minutes! As we did in the earlier flight, we'll be playing down until 10% of the field remains.
Meanwhile, the last of today's three flights is now underway: the 1030pm hyper-turbo, with 10-minute blinds.
As the tournament clock ticks over, bringing level 8 to a close, the tournament director announces there will be a 30-minute break in play, as our 260 players frantically leave the tournament area for the bar or some fresh air.
Having a look round the current stacks, it seems as though we will be seeing some very big stacks taken through to Day 2 from this flight. There are already a number of stacks at or approaching the 200,000 mark. Our chipleader at the moment, though, is currently sat on 213,000.
Late registration closes at the end of the break, which will allow us to clear a little space to set up for the last flight of the day: a hyper-turbo with 10-minute blind levels starting at 1030pm!
With the conclusion of today's first Day 1, the floor staff at Montesino have managed to make room for 10 alternates, bringing the total entrants up to 268, of whom 51 have chosen to re-enter already!
