Down Goes Nazari

Pooryah Nazari - Out
Pooryah Nazari - Out
A player in early position opened the pot with a raise, and Poorya Nazari reraised from the small blind. Another raise followed, and all of Nazari's ~50,000 chips went into the middle before the flop. He tabled pocket jacks, and he quickly saw the bad news that he had run smack into pocket aces.

The board bricked off for the defending champion, and he has been eliminated here on Day 2. There'll be no repeat this year.

King Saul

Kevin Saul opened to 3,000 in early position, and the big blind came along as the lone caller.

Heads up, the flop brought {10-Diamonds} {J-Clubs} {A-Hearts}, and both men checked. They would do the same when the {7-Spades} turned on fourth street, and the {2-Spades} filled out the board. The big blind finally stuck out a bet of 4,000, but Saul came right over the top with a covering raise to 25,000. His opponent thought it over for a minute or two before committing the rest of his stack with an all-in call.

Saul tabled {J-Hearts} {2-Hearts} for two pair, and it was the winner. The rest of his opponent's chips were pushed to his corner, and he's now sitting pretty with right at 200,000.

Filippi Counterfeited

Bernard Lee opened the pot with a raise to 3,200 and Amnon Filippi called. The two players checked all the way as the board ran out {Q-Clubs} {9-Hearts} {4-Diamonds} {Q-Hearts} {9-Diamonds}. After Lee checked the river, Filippi said, "I mean, I guess I check."

Filippi was upset that his pocket fives got counterfeited and allowed Lee's {A-Clubs} {K-Diamonds} to rake in the pot. As the pot was pushed to Lee, Filippi began cursing and complaining about the nine that hhit the river to counterfeit his hand. He's sitting on 200,000 while Lee is on 40,000.

ElkY Shot Down

On a flop of {A-Diamonds} {Q-?} {5-Diamonds}, all the chips of Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier went into the middle. Daniel Negreanu looked him up with {K-Diamonds} {Q-Diamonds}, and ElkY's {A-?} {J-?} would need to fade a lot of outs to survive.

The turn card was the {10-Diamonds}, ending the drama right there as ElkY had no re-draw. With a handshake and a, "Good luck," the gregarious French pro made his way out the door.

Negreanu is now in quite good shape with about 170,000.

Bye, Bye, Brenes

We noticed the far corner of the room was unusually quiet, so we made our way through the crowd of spectators to go figure out what the problem was. Humberto Brenes' chair was missing an Humberto, and table mate Darus Suharto told us the tale of his demise.

Humberto and his opponent saw a flop come down {J-Clubs} {9-?} {5-Clubs} with two clubs. All of the money went in, Humberto tabling {A-Clubs} {J-?} against his opponent's {7-Clubs} {9-Clubs}. A third club on the turn put Humberto in immediate danger, and he could not find another club to re-improve to his flush.

The shark is extinct.

Paul-Ambrose Movin' Up

The hijack seat opened to 3,500 before Team PokerStars Pro Steve Paul-Ambrose three-bet to 9,200 from the cutoff seat. The original raiser then called and the two players took a flop of {K-Hearts} {6-Spades} {4-Hearts}.

The first player checked to Paul-Ambrose, who fired 8,600. His opponent check-raised to 17,200, a min-raise. Paul-Ambrose took a few moments and then moved in for 38,300 total. His opponent folded and Paul-Ambrose moved to nearly 60,000 chips.

Chartier Opened With What?

Sam Chartier was faced with a bet of 7,800 on the final board of {10-Hearts} {8-Spades} {4-Spades} {Q-Spades} {2-Diamonds} from his opponent. After tanking for some time, Chartier put in the chips to make the call. His opponent held only ace high with the {A-Spades} {6-Hearts}. Chartier rolled over the {4-Hearts} {3-Hearts} for just a pair of fours and won the pot.

It was then found out that Chartier had opened the pot from under the gun with this hand. He now has 104,000 chips.

Finding Wheels in the River

John Monnette has just doubled through to 34,000 in chips after winning a race against an unknown opponent.

Monnette got it all in for 15,600 holding {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds} against an opponent's pocket tens. The ensuing board ran out {4-Diamonds}{3-Hearts}{2-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} giving Monnette a pot-clinching wheel and new life in the main event.
