Lobzhanidze Takes Charge; Leads Day 1a Field

Level 9 : 400/800, 100 ante
Maxim Lobzhanidze Leads Day 1a
Maxim Lobzhanidze Leads Day 1a

After nine grueling levels of poker on Monday, Day 1a of the 2013 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure $10,000 Main Event is officially in the books. After bagging and tagging for the night, Maxim Lobzhanidze emerged as the leader of the returning 162 players. He bagged up 248,900 in chips. Following closely on his heels are Gilbert Diaz (215,900) and Darren Elias (191,000).

A total of 320 players came out to play in the first flight of play. Compared to the turnout in 2012, which sported a 418-player Day 1a, there was a significant decrease in attendance — 23.445% to be exact. This could be partially due to the Open-Face Chinese Poker tournament that occurred on the other side of the room today, drawing many big names to action. Regardless of any reason, Day 1b is expected to have a much larger field.

Several notable players have been able to rise above the stiff competition in this event and earn themselves solid stacks going into Day 2. Among those returning are Paul Volpe (186,200), Bolivar Palacios (142,000), Scott Clements (102,000), Brian Altman (84,200), Sam Grafton (71,900), Chris Moorman (70,500), Ville Wahlbeck (46,300), 2012 PCA Main Event fourth-place finisher Xuan Liu (42,500) and Team PokerStars Pro Joe Cada (34,000).

Calvin Anderson had a tremendous showing during play on Day 1a, and he will be returning on Day 2 sporting a stack of 159,000. We caught a hand during the first level of play where Anderson was heads up with an opponent on a board that read {2-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{J-Clubs}. Anderson moved out a bet of 8,000 chips into a pot of roughly 12,000. His opponent flung out a call, and Anderson rolled over the {2-Hearts}{2-Clubs} for a flopped full house. He dragged in that massive pot early and went on to trend upward for the rest of the day.

While Anderson and others thrived on the felt, others saw their PCA Main Event come to a relatively quick conclusion. Names like Joseph Cheong, Barry Greenstein Chad Brown, Jean-Robert Bellande, Adam Levy, Marcel Luske, Lex Veldhuis, Faraz Jaka and Randy Lew all fell before the end of the final level. Still, there are plenty of side events to dabble in and of course the amazing beaches of the Bahamas to enjoy.

Day 1b will kick off at the Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island at 12:00 EST tomorrow. The field of Day 1b plans to include the likes of Daniel Negreanu, Jason Mercier, Phil Hellmuth, Vanessa Selbst, Victor Ramdin, Brandon Cantu and Shaun Deeb, among many others, so be sure to stay tuned. Your loyal servants here at PokerNews will be on hand to provide you all of the latest updates from the tournament floor. Until tomorrow!

On the {10-Spades}{7-Spades}{4-Diamonds} flop, an opponent bet 6,500 into Gilbert Diaz, but the chip leader didn't go anywhere. Diaz made the call, and the dealer landed the {8-Spades} out on the turn. With 16,000 in chips behind, the first player checked. Diaz fired enough to set the player all in, but the player eventually folded. Diaz showed the {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Clubs} and pulled in the pot.

Ho Busts Two After Flopping Straight

When we arrived at the table, the flop of {8-Clubs}{7-Hearts}{5-Hearts} was in the middle of the table and the action was on Maria Ho following a check by the first player. She bet 1,100, and Ted Lawson was next to act. He raised all in for 8,250 before the next player took a minute, then reraised all in for around 20,000. After the first player folded, Ho snap-called.

The reason Ho called so quickly was because she flopped the nuts with the {9-Hearts}{6-Hearts}. She also had outs to a straight flush, putting her in excellent shape. Lawson held the {A-Hearts}{3-Hearts} for the nut flush draw, and the other player held the {5-Diamonds}{5-Clubs} for bottom set. Ho had the most chips, meaning her two opponents were at risk, but both had outs.

Ho faded the turn as the {9-Clubs} fell, and the river was also a brick as far as she was concerned when the {Q-Diamonds} hit the felt. Ho's straight held up, and she won the pot. With the hand, Ho sent Lawson and the other player packing while shooting her stack up to 85,000.

The 2013 PCA Main Event Kicks Off Today!

Welcome to our coverage of the 2012 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event! Day 1a will begin today at noon as we search for a field to rival last year's 418 runners that showed up for the first day of play. Last year saw a dip in the number of entrants due to the events of Black Friday, but as time has passed we expect the number of entrants to bounce back this year.

John DiBella won this event last year and was able to pocket an astounding $1,775,000 for his efforts. DiBella, considered an amateur at the time, had only $42,405 in tournament winnings before finally proving himself on one of poker's grandest stages. He overcame a final table that included the likes of Xuan Liu, Faraz Jaka, and Kyle Julius to take home the prize.

We expect to see DiBella in the field either today or tomorrow to defend his title. Everyone that one would expect to be here will be participating in this event, though some may wait for Day 1b in order to participate in today's Open-Face Chinese Poker tournament.

Other players who will be joining us on Day 1b include David "Doc" Sands, Nick Schulman, Scott Seiver, and the rest of the players to make the final table of the $100,000 Super High Roller. Be sure to follow along with our coverage of that event as well as it will be playing down to a champion today!

Last year the field played 9 levels on Day 1 and as of now we're expecting to play 10 levels with a dinner break after level 6.

As the players begin to take their seats the mood in the room is becoming electric. What better way to kick off a new year than crowning a new millionaire at an island paradise? Be sure to stay tuned to PokerNews throughout the rest of the day as we provide you with the latest coverage from the tournament floor!
