Seiver Folds to Petrangelo's Shove

Level 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

The board read {3-Hearts}{4-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{K-Clubs} when we saw Scott Seiver check-call a bet of 72,000 from Nick Petrangelo. On the river the {3-Diamonds} hit and Seiver checked again.

Petrangelo moved all in to put Seiver at risk, but after a few seconds he folded.

"Ace jack?" a player at the table said, and Petrangelo flashed the {J-Clubs}.

"Not ace-jack," Petrangelo added, as he stacked up the chips .

Dvoress Gets Away on the River

Level 7 : 2,000/4,000, 500 ante

David Peters raised to 9,000 and Daniel Dvoress moved all in for 75,500. Peters tanked for a bit before calling, and the showdown went as following.

Peters: {Q-Spades}{J-Spades}
Dvoress: {7-Clubs}{7-Spades}

The board ran out {J-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}{K-Hearts}{7-Hearts} and while Peters hit a pair on the flop, Dvoress got away from being knocked out on the river by hitting a third seven.

No Seven from Heaven for Holz

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Fedor Holz
Fedor Holz

Fedor Holz, who is just days removed from winning the Triton Super High Roller $200,000 Cali Cup for $3,463,000, was just eliminated at the hands of Team PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier.

It happened when Holz shoved all in for his last 63,000 from the cutoff and Mercier moved all in over the top from the button. The blinds both folded and Holz discovered the bad news.

Mercier: {k-}{k-}
Holz: {7-Spades}{7-Clubs}

Holz was in big trouble, and the {6-}{6-}{3-} flop didn't provide him much help. The {4-} turn gave him a gutshot, but it proved a moot point when an {A-} blanked on the river.

Something tells us we'll see Holz back in action, if not yet today then tomorrow.

Shakerchi Puts Koon to the Test

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Jason Koon raised from the hijack and then called when Talal Shakerchi three-bet to 35,000 from the small blind. The {5-Clubs}{j-Spades}{9-Spades} flop saw Shakerchi fire out 42,000, Koon call, and the dealer burn and turn the {5-Hearts}. Both players checked, the {2-Clubs} completed the board on the river, and Shakerchi took a big pile of green T25,000 chips and spiked them in the pot.

Koon had 150,000 behind and would need to put his tournament life on the line if he wanted to make the call. He decided against it however and released his hand.

Shak Doubles Through Kanit

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Mustapha Kanit raised to 11,500 and from his direct left it was Dan Shak who three-bet to 37,500 on the button. Kanit called, the flop brought out {Q-Diamonds}{9-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and Kanit check-called 31,000.

On the turn the {2-Hearts} hit and Kanit checked again, after which Shak bet 75,000.

Kanit moved all in, to put Shak at risk for 191,000 total, and the American player called almost right away.

Kanit: {A-Clubs}{5-Spades}
Shak: {Q-Clubs}{J-Clubs}

The river was the {3-Hearts} and Shak found himself a double up.

McKeehen Chips Up Through Schwartz

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

Joe McKeehen raised to 12,000 from the cutoff and Noah Schwartz three-bet from the small blind to 37,000. McKeehen made the call and the flop brought out {Q-Spades}{10-Hearts}{8-Diamonds}, on which Schwartz bet 40,000 and McKeehen called.

On the turn the {Q-Clubs} hit and both players checked. The river brought the {A-Hearts} and Schwartz checked to McKeehen, who bet 75,000. Schwartz tanked for a bit before calling, and mucked when the WSOP Main Event champion showed {A-Clubs}{K-Diamonds}.

Reigning GPI Player of the Year Sent to the Rail

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Byron Kaverman
Byron Kaverman

Byron Kaverman, who talked to us earlier today about winning the GPI Player of the Year, was just eliminated at the hands of Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu.

It happened when Kaverman open-shipped the button for roughly 75,000 and Negreanu three-bet all in over the top from the small blind. Mike "Timex" McDonald folded from the big and it was off to the races.

Negreanu: {a-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Kaverman: {7-Hearts}{7-Spades}

Kaverman was looking to hold, but that proved easier said than done as the {4-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Diamonds} flop paired Negreanu. Neither the {10-Spades} turn nor {K-Spades} river helped Kaverman, and he made a late exit from the tournament.

Three More Hands

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante

The tournament staff just announced the remaining players will play three more hands before bagging and tagging for the night. We're headed out to capture any last-minute action and to compile a list of chip counts. Stay tuned for those as well as a full recap of the Day 1 action.

Double Elimination Sees Bonomo and Kanit Bust On Last Hand

Level 8 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Justin Bonomo
Justin Bonomo

On the final hand of the day at the table, Ankush Mandavia raised to 13,000 from the hijack seat. Justin Bonomo was on the button and reraised all in for about 140,000-150,000. In the small blind was Mustapha Kanit, and he called all in for 27,500. Dan Shak folded from the big blind, and then Mandavia quickly made the call to put both players at risk.

Mandavia had the best hand with the {J-Hearts}{J-Spades}. Bonomo had the {A-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}, and Kanit tabled the {3-Hearts}{2-Diamonds} with a shrug.

The flop, turn, and river ran out {9-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{5-Hearts}, and Mandavia won the pot to bust both players.
