Joshi Suffers Small Setback

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Neel Joshi
Neel Joshi

Neel Joshi looked up a short stack for a mere five blinds and was ahead with {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs} versus {k-Hearts}{q-Hearts}. However, the board ran out {q-Diamonds}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts}{5-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and the short stack survived. Joshi's stack took a minor hit but he remains at more than two times the average.

Hwang Doubles Through Thanarattrakul

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Soonchul Hwang
Soonchul Hwang

Following a heads-up turn of {7-Spades}{6-Clubs}{4-Diamonds}{6-Spades}, Soonchul Hwang checked and Kannapong Thanarattrakul bet 10,500. A check-raise to 22,500 by Hwang was called by Thanarattrakul and they headed to the {q-Diamonds} river on which Hwang jammed for 33,600.

That sent Thanarattrakul into a brief tank and he asked the dealer to spread the pot. Once that was done, Thanarattrakul called and Hwang tabled the {q-Spades}{5-Spades} which was good for the double, as his opponent only had {j-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds}.

Edoc's Hero Call Goes Wrong

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante
Lester Edoc
Lester Edoc

In a battle big blind versus button, the completed board showed {j-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{k-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}. Jun Hee Kim bet 9,000 and that sent Lester Edoc into a brief tank before he called. Kim tabled the {q-Spades}{10-Hearts} and was certain to lose the pot but Edoc shrugged and double-checked his cards again.

Then, much to the surprise of the table, he mucked the {q-Diamonds} with a grin on the face.

Fake Jam by Patni Does the Trick

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Kunal Patni raised and then called a three-bet by his table neighbour. He check-called a bet on the {6-Hearts}{5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} flop and the {9-Hearts} turn was checked through. After the {8-Clubs} river, Patni bet 22,000 with just a few T-100 chips behind and that forced a fold.

Positive Thinking Works for Holland

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

According to Shyh Chyn Lim, Kirill Holland had prayed for pocket kings in the table chat and received them soon after. "You should hope for aces next," Lim joked and just now Holland was in a preflop raising war. With the three-bet amount already pulled in, Holland was all-in for another 10,800 on top.

His opponent sigh-folded after more than a minute and Holland grinned. "Positive thinking works ..." he said and Lim asked if he had aces. "Of course," Holland replied and tabled the {a-Spades}{a-Hearts}.

Phan Cannot Valuebet Against Chung

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Ming San Chung defended the big blind against a cutoff raise by Nam Dinh Phan with a three-bet and check-called a bet worth 6,000 on the {a-Spades}{j-Spades}{8-Hearts} flop. The {3-Hearts} turn and {k-Hearts} river were then checked down. Chung tabled his {10-Clubs}{10-Diamonds} but Phan had the best of it with the {k-Spades}{j-Clubs}. "I cannot valuebet anything," Phan sighed while raking in the pot.

Phan Scores a Knockout

Level 8 : Blinds 500/1,000, 1,000 ante

Slowly but surely, the field is trimmed down and more than 70 starting stacks have already exchanged players. The latest contender to reduce the field by one was Cuong Hung Phan when he just flat-called a raise by Neel Joshi along with two other players.

A short stack then pushed the {10-Clubs}{3-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} flop for the last 8,800 and Phan flat-called while both other players let go.

Short stack: {10-Spades}{9-Spades}
Cuong Hung Phan: {a-Clubs}{10-Hearts}

The kicker problem was never solved as the {6-Hearts} turn and {7-Spades} river awarded the pot to Phan.
