Xavier Carriere Leads After Day 1a of the 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event

Level 8 : 400/800, 100 ante
Jake Cody on to Day 2
Jake Cody on to Day 2

The first of two starting days of the 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event is in the books. The poker world has traveled en masse to Casino Barcelona in the past week, where attendance records have once again been shattered all over. With 437 players showing up for Day 1a of the €7 million guaranteed Main Event, and a multitude of that expected for Day 1b, the capital of Catalunya remains one of the most popular poker stops in the world.

After eight levels of 75 minutes, 213 players made their way to Day 2, Xavier Carriere (205,700) of France bagging the overnight chip lead. Adalfer Morales Gamarra isn't far behind with 192,900 in chips. Gamarra finished 3rd in a €550 Hyper Turbo for €31,845 earlier this week and is riding the wave. Upeshka De Silva (180,000) rounded out the top three. Dario Sammartino (141,100), Ryan Riess (113,800), Christopher Kruk (107,400), Steve Warburton (92,000), Bart Lybaert (62,200), Dan Colman (59,000), Nick Petrangelo (37,000), Pierre Neuville (14,000), and Kenny Hallaert (13,000) also made it to Day 2.

It was an exciting day in Barcelona, as no fewer than three big winners were crowned. Russia's Igor Kurganov (€50,000 Super High Roller for €1,135,000), Argentina's Pedro Cairat (€1,100 PokerStars National Championship for €432,178), and Holland's Sander van Wesemael (€330 PokerStars Cup for €127,000) all added another fantastic result to their respective careers.

The day started off with a little over 100 players taking their seats right at the start. Fatima Moreira de Melo was one of the players active in the first level, scooping up a lot of small pots in the process. The Team PokerStars lasted until level 6 when she busted with pocket kings. On a trey-six-five-six board, De Melo called a shove, only to be shown ace-six for trips.

Moreira de Melo found herself in good company, as fellow Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu also busted on Day 1a. A tired Negreanu, who cashed in the €50K Super High Roller earlier during the day, got eliminated with trip sevens against a king-high flush in the penultimate level of the day. They were joined on the rail by Team PokerStars Online Pro Jaime Staples, 2014 World Champion Martin Jacobson, Christoph Vogelsang, Steve O'Dwyer, Gaelle Baumann, Benjamin Pollak, and Linus "LLinusLLove" Loeliger.

Of the 213 players that bagged chips at the end of the night, it was Dario Sammartino rocking one of the bigger stacks with 141,100. Sammartino biggest pot came when he held up with pocket kings in a massive clash against Jimmy Guerrero, where Guerrero bricked his straight and flush draws.

2013 World Champion Ryan Riess bagged 113,800 and is also a strong contender going forward. During the last hour of the day, Riess overbet with pocket jacks on a nine-deuce-nine-seven board with two hearts. His opponent called with pocket tens and busted, which moved Riess up over the 100k mark.

On Tuesday at noon local time, Day 1b will commence. Like last year, over 1,000 players are expected to take their shot at the €7 million guaranteed prize pool. Eight levels of 75 minutes will be played, with a 75-minute dinner break scheduled after level six. All players will receive 30,000 in chips.

Survivors from Day 1b will join those from Day 1a on Wednesday, August 23rd at 12 p.m.. Follow PokerNews throughout the week and don't miss anything from the inaugural PokerStars Championship Barcelona.

Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu's run in the Main Event has ended in the penultimate level of the day. On a {9-Spades}{8-Spades}{3-Spades}{7-Spades}{7-Hearts} board, Negreanu was all in with {7-Clubs}{6-Clubs} for trip sevens but his opponent held {K-Clubs}{K-Spades} for a king-high flush to become the second player to eliminate the Canadian today.

"I played the €50k earlier and I'm so tired. Good luck everyone," Negreanu said while making his exit.

Christoph Vogelsang Eliminated

Level 7 : 300/600, 100 ante
Christoph Vogelsang
Christoph Vogelsang

We missed it, when we arrived, Vogelsang was already getting up and packing his bags. Kirsch told our German colleague what had happened, and our colleague told us. So here's what happened in the hand.

Jeff Kirsch opened from late position and Christoph Vogelsang called from the big blind. Both of them checked on {K-Diamonds}{3-Clubs}{4-Diamonds} and the {3-Spades} hit the turn. Vogelsang bet out and Kirsch called. The river was the {2-Diamonds} and Vogelsang shoved for approximately 8,500. Kirsch called and Vogelsang mucked.

The dealer wanted a showdown but Vogelsang's cards were already unretrievable. The German high roller said he had {J-}{9-}. Kirsch tabled {K-Spades}{7-Spades} and took down the pot, eliminating Vogelsang.

Moreira de Melo Falls

Level 6 : 250/500, 75 ante
Fatima Moreira De Melo
Fatima Moreira De Melo

Fatima Moreira de Melo bet 4,500 from the small blind against a pair of opponents on a {3-Spades}{6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} flop. Both called, and the {6-Spades} paired the board. Moreira de Melo fired again for 7,000. An early player mucked, but Alexis Urli shoved it all in from middle position. Moreira de Melo would need to call off her remaining 17,300 to continue. After a couple of minutes, she decided not to let it go.

Moreira de Melo: {k-Clubs}{k-Diamonds}
Urli: {a-Clubs}{6-Clubs}

The PokerStars Team Pro desperately needed a cowboy to emerge from the deck, but a {7-Diamonds} fell to end her tournament.

Carrel Bluffs Vogelsang Big

Level 5 : 200/400, 50 ante
Charlie Carrel
Charlie Carrel

We found high roller regs Christoph Vogelsang and Charlie Carrel tangling in a pot of about 13,000 with {7-Clubs}{8-Hearts}{7-Hearts}{4-Clubs}{j-Diamonds} on the felt. Vogelsang was facing an overbet of 20,000 on the river, with Carrel sitting in position on the button. Vogelsang seemed truly pained as he went deep into the tank. After about four minutes, he finally slid his cards forward and told Carrel he was folding. Carrel busted out laughing, and Vogelsang dragged his cards back, regretting his move.

The German smiled and turned over {a-Clubs}{a-Spades}, with Carrel showing he had gotten the better hand to fold after missing his flush draw: {a-Hearts}{3-Hearts}.

Gaelle Baumann Eliminated

Level 4 : 150/300, 50 ante
Gaelle Baumann
Gaelle Baumann

Gaelle Baumann has made an early exit from the PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event. According to the French reporter that was on hand, Hans Sybrandi raised to 700 and Nick Petrangelo called. From the big blind, Gaelle Baumann three-bet to 2,600, Sybrandi called, and Petrangelo called as well.

The flop was {6-}{5-Diamonds}{4-Diamonds} and Baumann continued with 3,300. Sybrandi made the call, while Petrangelo opted to fold. The turn brought the {6-Diamonds} and Baumann shoved 14,000, which got snap-called by Sybrandi.

Gaelle Baumann: {A-Diamonds}{A-}
Hans Sybrandi: {8-}{7-}

The river wasn't the ace or six Baumann needed to fill up and she was eliminated.

PokerStars National Championship
PokerStars National Championship

While things are just getting going here in the €5,300 Main Event at PokerStars Championship Barcelona, they're winding down in the €1,100 National Championship, which drew the largest field in PokerStars Live history with 4,557 entries. Over 3,600 of those were unique entries as well, and the prize pool swelled to the point where first place is set to be awarded €575,000.

Given all that, PokerNews has decided to fire up some live coverage of the final table. Check out all of the updates here.

Sick Runout Sees Kirsch Eliminate One

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
PokerStars Championship Barcelona
PokerStars Championship Barcelona

A player on the button had an all-in shove of 11,000 in front of him when we got to his table, having been faced with a raise to 1,600 from Jeff Kirsch in the small blind. Kirsch thought it over and then tossed in a call, and the all-in shipper immediately stood up and tabled {3-Hearts}{3-Spades}, expecting to be heading for the exits.

However, he was ahead as Kirsch held {a-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}. The dealer spread a {3-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{8-Clubs} flop.

"Good flop for you," said Mark Teltscher, clearly expecting things were wrapped up.

That would be a natural assumption with Kirsch drawing to runners, but he found a sweat on the {k-Spades} turn. The {k-Hearts} river gave Kirsch kings full to eliminate his unfortunate opponent, who had resumed sitting in expectation of receiving a double and had to get right back up.

Small Pots Grow Big Quick

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante
Nick Petrangelo
Nick Petrangelo

In one of the last hands of the previous level, Nick Petrangelo opened the cutoff for 300 and received no fewer than 3 callers; the button and both blinds were all interested in seeing a flop.

Small blind Francois Corouge and big blind Liem Huynh checked on {10-Hearts}{7-Spades}{K-Hearts} and Petrangelo bet 800. Ricardo Tavares called from the button before small blind Corouge squeezed to 3,100. Huynh wasted no time calling.

Petrangelo glanced at his chips for a bit before he 3-bet to 8,000. Tavares thought about it for a just a bit before folding. Corouge thought about it a bit longer but eventually followed suit en folded as well. Huynh called.

The {2-Clubs} hit the turn and Huynh checked.

"You have 3 blues behind, right?" Petrangelo asked.

Huynh acknowledged he had 15,000 in blue chips and had about 2,000 or so more in smaller denomination chips.

Petrangelo bet 19,000, putting Huynh all in and leaving himself just 2,550 behind.

Huyhn tanked for under a minute and folded. Petrangelo silently mucked while raking in the chips.
