Salazar Sanchez Soars to Top on Day 2, Money Bubble Looms in Barcelona Main Event

Level 14 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Mauricio Salazar Sanchez
Mauricio Salazar Sanchez

The 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona €5,300 Main Event saw another 13 players buy in before the cards got underway for Day 2 at the annex of Casino Barcelona to create a field of 1,682 entries and a prize pool of €8,157,700 emerged. The money spots and min-cash of €8,740 are not too far away with 287 hopefuls advancing to Day 3 and 247 spots are being paid, while all eyes are set on the trophy and enormous first-place payout of €1,410,000.

Leading the field of hopefuls after a total of 14 levels of 75 minutes each is Colombia's Mauricio Salazar Sanchez with 507,000, narrowly edging out Rosen Angelov (497,500) and Sergey Sergeev (470,500). Among the other big stacks are Paraskevas Tsokaridis (428,500), Mark Roovers (406,500), Jussi Nevanlinna (394,000), Patrick Leonard (394,000), and Kyle Bowker (392,500). Raffaele Sorrentino's bid to become the first ever two-time champion of the series is still intact, the 2017 PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo Casino winner claimed 300,000 to his name for Day 3.

Two PokerStars Team Pros made it through to Day 3 with Andre Akkari (202,500) and Jeff Gross (29,000), while their team mates Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier, Felipe Ramos, Marcin Horecki and Jake Cody were all sent to the rail. Cody was among the first casualties of the day when his ace-king failed to get there against Didier Mazairac's pocket nines.

By then, 2016 EPT Barcelona runner-up Uri Reichenstein was also out already, losing all his chips in the first level in a set-under-set nightmare against Tobias Peters. Defending champion Sebastian Malec, who emerged victorious one year ago against Reichenstein in one of the most epic final hands at this very venue, would also run out of chips eventually. Malec three-bet shoved with ace-nine suited and Zinan Xu called with queen-jack suited, also of spades, to spike a jack on the turn.

Other notables that were eliminated on Day 2 include 2015 EPT Barcelona champion John Juanda, who's top pair was no good against the nut straight of Nikolaos Triantafyllou, Dan Colman, Nicolas Chouity, Kimmo Kurko, Sergio Aido, Bruno "Kool Shen" Lopes, Vladimir Troyanovskiy, Bruno Politano, David Peters, Bryn Kenney, Dominik Nitsche, Ivan Luca and Isaac Haxton to name just a few. Troyanovskiy and Politano fell in quick succession to [Removed:43], and the Frenchman made it through with 240,000.

Day 3 will recommence with level 15 and blinds of 2,000/4,000 and a running ante of 500. A total of five levels of 90 minutes each are scheduled and the money bubble is expected to burst within the first two levels, action resumes at 12 p.m. noon local time. The PokerNews live reporting team will bring you all the action from the floor, so stay tuned and check back regularly.

Bruno Politano: {J-Hearts}{J-Clubs}

Stuer Set Up; Leonard Cracks Aces

Level 11 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
Patrick Leonard
Patrick Leonard

Julian Stuer and Andreas Allsalu got their stacks in after a flop of {J-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{9-Hearts} and Stuer found himself on the wrong end of a set-over-set scenario with {9-Diamonds}{9-Clubs}. Allsalu had {10-Spades}{10-Clubs} and held up thanks to the {5-Hearts} turn and {6-Clubs} river.

The hand was barely over when Stuer was in the next pot already and raised to 3,500. Patrick Leonard three-bet and Sachin Joshi four-bet to 23,800. Stuer quickly folded while Leonard called. On the {5-Spades}{3-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop, Leonard moved all in and Joshi quickly called for what appeared to be 48,000.

Sachin Joshi: {A-Hearts}{A-Diamonds}
Patrick Leonard: {8-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}

The {K-Hearts} turn was a blank, but Leonard got there thanks to the {8-Clubs} on the river.

Level 10 : 600/1,200, 200 ante
Adrian Mateos
Adrian Mateos

Ihar Soika raised to 3,000 and Adrian Mateos from one seat over in the cutoff three-bet to 9,000, which Soika called. On the {J-Hearts}{8-Spades}{2-Clubs} flop, Soika checked and called a bet of 7,500 by Mateos.

The same action repeated on the {Q-Spades} turn for 25,000 before the {6-Spades} river went check, check. Soika rolled over {A-Spades}{Q-Hearts} and Mateos claimed the pot with {K-Diamonds}{K-Hearts}. The Spaniard just signed up before the start of Day 2 and has ran up quite an impressive stack already.

Latorre Smashes Through 400k

Level 9 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Jose Angel Latorre
Jose Angel Latorre

Start-of-the-day chipleader Jose Angel Latorre blasted out of the gates in a massive confrontation that left Tomi Brouk empty-handed after the dust had settled.

Latorre raised to 2,000 from under the gun, Tomi Brouk three-bet to 7,000 in middle position, Latorre four-bet to 23,000, and Brouk called. The flop was {J-Clubs}{6-Spades}{2-Hearts} and Latorre continued with 19,500. Brouk took some time before making the call.

On the {7-Spades} turn, Latorre cut out a bet of 44,000 and Brouk went deep in the tank. After several minutes, he cut out the calling chips and bolstered the pot to more than 100k.

The river was the {A-Hearts} and Latorre moved all in. Brouk sighed deep, as if he felt what was coming, and flicked in a calling chip to call off his last 70,000.

Jose Latorre: {A-Clubs}{A-Spades}
Tomi Brouk: {J-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

Brouk's gut feeling was right, as Latorre had rivered the higher set to knock him out. Just like that, the Finn, who started the day with 160,800, was gone. Latorre is now swinging almost twice the stack of his nearest challenger.

Jake Cody: {A-Spades}{K-Diamonds}
Didier Mazairac: {9-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}

The board came {6-Hearts}{5-Hearts}{3-Spades}{8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts} and Cody joined the rail early on Day 2.

Team PokerStars Pro Andre Akkari had a strong showing on Day 1b

After two starting days, a bumper field of 1,670 players has been trimmed down to about half its original size. 852 players will be back at noon local time to play the second day of the 2017 PokerStars Championship Barcelona Main Event in the packed Casino Barcelona. Late registration will be open up until the start of Day 2, and several more players are expected to take a shot at the already smashed €7 million guaranteed prize pool.

Leading the way is Spain's Jose Angel Latorre with 243,800 in chips. The 32-year old high-stakes Sit & Go specialist, who relocated to London to play in the shared liquidity player's pool on PokerStars, claimed the chip lead on Day 1b after a late-night surge. In close contention are Xavier Carriere (205,700), Vladimir Geshkenbein (200,000), Adalfar Morales Gamarra (192,900), and Usman Siddique (191,000).

A lot of notables are still left in the field, including Team PokerStars Pro's Andre Akkari (123,300), Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (57,700), Felipe Ramos (41,300), Jeff Gross (40,700), Jake Cody (22,000), and Marcin Horecki (15,300). Sebastian Malec, who won last year's EPT Barcelona Main Event, bagged 61,000 and is still in contention for another title bid.

Day 2 will feature six levels of 75-minutes each, with a 20-minute break after every two levels. The blinds will resume at 500/1,000 with a running ante of 100. Play will be suspended around 8:20 p.m. local time when chips will be bagged and tagged for the night. Follow PokerNews throughout the day for all the updates from the vibrant Spanish city.
