Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier Advances to Day 4 With a Top Five Stack

Day 3 of the 2017 PokerStars Championship presented by Monte-Carlo Casino €5,300 Main Event® was an exciting day that saw a field of 134 players being reduced to just 45 hopefuls. Each of them will be back tomorrow with €15,420 already locked up, although all eyes will be set on the first-place prize of €500,800. The massive amount of money will be handed out to the victor of the first European PokerStars Championship Main Event this Friday night in "Le Sporting" at Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort.

The 45 survivors are led by Michael Kolkowicz, who ended Day 3 on top with 1,445,000 in chips. Stefan Schillhabel is second with 1,380,000, Belgian crusher Davidi Kitai sits in third with 1,087,000. Other notables that made it through include Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier (771,000), Alexandru Papazian (670,000), Jeff Hakim (511,000), Sebastian Malec (509,000), Arne Coulier (394,000), Manig Loeser (350,000), Stefan Huber (235,000) and last year's champion Jan Bendik (223,000). Dan Smith starts Day 4 as the short stack with 99,000 in chips.

Daniel Negreanu and Patrik Antonius failed to make it to Day 4. They were joined on the rail by start-of-the-day chipleader Nick Petrangelo, who had to bow out early after losing a couple of big hands in short succession.

At noon local time, 134 players took their seats with money already in the bag. Early exits that received the minimum cash of €7,580 included Alex Luneau, Preben Stokkan, Rocco Palumbo, Usman Siddique, Tsugunari Toma and Viliyan Petleshkov.

Team PokerStars Pro Liv Boeree also left with the minimum amount. Short stacked, Boeree shoved king-nine into Sebastian Malec's ace-queen and failed to catch up. Shortly after, Maria Ho busted as well after losing a coin flip situation with king-jack against pocket eights.

During the second level of the day, Team PokerStars Pro Celina Lin flipped out with ace-queen against pocket tens. It was also the level that spelled the end for Nick Petrangelo. The American high roller found his nemesis in Romain Nardin and shockingly hit the rail early on. Nardin first got lucky with ace-eight against Petrangelo's ace-king, then won a massive confrontation with ace-king against Petrangelo's pocket jacks which also saw 2014 WSOP Main Event champion Martin Jacobson bite the dust. Just like that, Petrangelo was out.

Patrik Antonius, Mark Teltscher, Luke Schwarz, Andreas Hoivold, Igor Yaroshevskyy, Jason Wheeler and Fabrice Soulier joined Petrangelo soon after. Nicolas Fuentes Vidal joined them as well with a story to tell: a lost pot of more than one million chips with kings against Stefan Schillhabel's aces ended Vidal's run in one big blow.

Team PokerStars Pro's Daniel Negreanu and Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier were seated at the feature table the entire day. ElkY had a fantastic day and ran his stack up to 771,000 in chips, courtesy of two massive hands with pocket aces. In the first, he doubled through Daniel Negreanu's king-queen, only to double again later on through Hossein Ensan, who misstepped with ten-seven.

After losing some of his chips to ElkY, Negreanu found himself on the downward slope. With queen-jack, his last chips went in on a jack-six-five board against Ensan. Unfortunately for the Canadian superstar, Ensen held pocket fives for bottom set and forced Negreanu out the door.

The remaining players will return tomorrow at 12 p.m. noon local time to play five scheduled levels of 90 minutes each with a 20-minute break after every level. Play will resume in level 19 with blinds of 5,000/10,000 and a running ante of 1,000. Follow PokerNews for all the live reporting action from the floor until the PokerStars Championship Main Event winner is crowned on Friday night.

Kolkowicz Rivers Full House to Eliminate L'Hostis

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Jerome L'Hostis
Jerome L'Hostis

Jerome L'Hostis has been the first player above one million chips, but this has now been reduced to zero after a big clash with Michael Kolkowicz.

It was L'Hostis that raised from under the gun and Kolkowicz called from one seat over, Raffaele Sorrentino also called in the big blind. On the {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}{J-Spades} flop, Sorrentino checked and so did L'Hostis. Kolkowicz bet 44,000 and that resulted in a fold from Sorrentino and a call from L'Hostis.

Kolkowicz checked the stack of his opponent before the {5-Hearts} fell on the turn, and L'Hostis then checked. Kolkowicz made it 100,000 to go and faced the check-raise all in for 308,000 by L'Hostis soon after. It took more than two minutes and Kolkowicz then called while saying "I know I am behind, but there are too many chips in the middle" in French.

Jerome L'Hostis: {A-Diamonds}{10-Spades}
Michael Kolkowicz: {K-Hearts}{J-Diamonds}

The {J-Hearts} fell on the river to give Kolkowicz a full house and he regained the lead from table neighbor Stefan Schillhabel.

Daniel Negreanu Eliminated

Level 18 : 4,000/8,000, 1,000 ante
Daniel Negreanu
Daniel Negreanu

Team PokerStars Pro is down to just Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier as Daniel Negreanu's run in the PokerStars Championship Main Event ended in 51st place.

Negreanu opened to 18.000 from the cutoff and Hossein Ensan defended his big blind. The flop was {J-Spades}{6-Clubs}{5-Hearts} and Ensan checked. Negreanu bet 22,000 and Ensan responded with a quick check-raise to 55,000.

"Make it 100k," said Negreanu as he put in the corresponding amount. Ensan quickly went all in and Negreanu called his remaining 124,000 off.

"You got something good?" Negreanu asked.

"Set," answered Ensan.

"Set? How big? Not good" laughed Negreanu, who knew he was drawing nearly dead.

Daniel Negreanu: {Q-Diamonds}{J-Diamonds}
Hossein Ensan: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}

The {K-Diamonds} on the turn ended it all for the Canadian superstar, who received €12,080 for his 51st place. "Good luck my friend," he told Ensan as he left the table.

Ensan Missteps; ElkY Skyrockets

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier

In the last hand before the break, Bertrand "ElKY" Grospellier opened to 13,000 on the button and Marius-Catalin Pertea called from the small blind. Hossein Ensan three-bet to 31,000 from the big blind. Grospellier took his time before four-betting to 82,000 and Pertea got out of the way.

It took Ensan not even two seconds before announcing all-in. ElkY beat him to the pot and Ensan's face went aghast.

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier: {A-Hearts}{A-Clubs}
Hossein Ensan: {10-Clubs}{7-Hearts}

The EPT12 Prague winner made a big misstep and was about to pay dearly for it in an 800k pot. With just 15% equity, Ensan needed a miracle but didn't find one on a {Q-Clubs}{4-Spades}{J-Diamonds}{Q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds} board.

The German had to fork over nearly 400,000 of his stack to the French Team PokerStars Pro, who enters the third break as one of the biggest stacks in the room.

Massive Clash Vaults Schillhabel to the Top

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Stefan Schillhabel
Stefan Schillhabel

Nicolas Fuentes Vidal had previously doubled through Stefan Schillhabel and both were at it again in a raising war with both players at over half a million in chips. Picking up the action on a squeeze to 113,000 by Schillhabel, Vidal reraised from one seat over for more than 250,000 and Schillhabel then shoved, Vidal called.

Stefan Schillhabel: {A-Diamonds}{A-Hearts}
Nicolas Fuentes Vidal: {K-Spades}{K-Clubs}

The {J-Clubs}{5-Clubs}{2-Clubs} was a huge sweat for Schillhabel despite getting it in with the best hand, however, the {7-Spades} turn and {2-Spades} river both blanked. Schillhabel's stack was counted for 585,000 and Vidal had 532,000 to join the rail with a story to tell.

ElkY Picks Up Aces, Doubles Through Negreanu

Level 17 : 3,000/6,000, 1,000 ante
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier
Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier

At the TV table, Hossein Ensan opened to 12,000 in early position and Daniel Negreanu called on the button. Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier went all in for 143,000 from the big blind and Ensan folded.

"I'll gamble with you, bud" quipped Negreanu before making the call.

Bertrand "ElkY" Grospellier: {A-Diamonds}{A-Clubs}
Daniel Negreanu: {K-Clubs}{Q-Clubs}

"Club, club!" cheered Negreanu after the {7-Hearts}{3-Hearts}{3-Clubs} flop, which left him drawing very slim. The {7-Spades} on the turn sealed the double for ElkY, making the {10-Hearts} river meaningless. ElkY is back at 50 big blinds.

After a raise by Jason Wheeler, table big stack Jerome L'Hostis three-bet to 42,000 out of the big blind. Wheeler moved all in and L'Hostis called while the camera crews headed to the table to film the action.

Nardin Busts Petrangelo and Jacobson in Massive Pot

Level 16 : 2,500/5,000, 500 ante
Nick Petrangelo
Nick Petrangelo

What a day for Romain Nardin! The French online wizard started the day with 35,500, just seven big blinds. Compare that to Nick Petrangelo, who started the day as the chipleader with 562,000. After two levels however, the Frenchman is in charge and Petrangelo is out of the tournament.

After a raise to 11,500, Martin Jacobson three-bet to 40,000, nearly all his remaining chips. Petrangelo flat-called the reraise, Nardin put in a four-bet and Jacobson called with his remaining stack.

Petrangelo wasn't done yet, as the American tournament crusher five-bet shoved all in for 350,000. Nardin wasn't backing down and called Petrangelo's shove, suddenly creating the biggest pot of the tournament so far.

Romain Nardin: {A-Diamonds}{K-Clubs}
Nick Petrangelo: {J-}{J-}
Martin Jacobson: {10-}{10-}

Petrangelo kept the lead in the massive pot after the dealer fanned out a low flop of {9-Spades}{4-Hearts}{9-Diamonds} The {5-Spades} on the turn was safe as well for the American. As if it was scripted, the {A-Spades} fell on the river and just like that, the huge pot got shipped to Nardin.

Jacobson out, Petrangelo out. Wow!
