Who Will Win the NJCOOP Main Event?

Shankar Pillai
Shankar Pillai

Fifty-two players will be returning Monday evening at 7 p.m. ET for Day 2 of the PokerStars 2020 New Jersey Championship of Online Poker Main Event with their eyes set on the top prize of $22,444, all of whom survived Sunday’s Day 1 from the 422 recorded entries.

Shankar “Burgersssss” Pillai will enter play with the rest of the field looking up at him and his stack of 2.44 million. Pillai is no stranger to the bright lights, having amassed lifetime earnings of over $1.96 million. He has also been plenty active and successful online in 2020, scoring more than a dozen cashes over this past summer for over $1.2 million of those winnings.

Arian "angel zera" Stolt comes into the day next in chips (2.27 million) as the only other player above 2 million. Jaime "moosedeer17" Reyes (1.91 million), “zBeanHeaDz” (1.87 million), and Kevin "T1111111111M" Campbell round out the top five.

Other players of note who are in contention include Dan “monkeyma067” Sewnig (870,629), Dan “AvaGray” Lupo (779,375), Sanjeev “sandman9876” Datta (541,244), Mike “mmenz08816” Menzer (230,636), and Daniel “loxonbagel” Buzgon (476,858), who is in search of his second NJCOOP title after winning Event #20 (8-Game) earlier this month.

Play resumes in Level 23 with blinds of 12,500/25,000 and an ante of 3,250. Levels will be 18 minutes in length and will continue until one player has amassed every chip in play to claim the NJCOOP Main Event title. Who will be that one? Follow along on PokerNews to find out.

Event Highlights

The NJCOOP series, which will run through October 26, features $1 million in total guarantees across 54 events.

The crown jewel of the series is of course the $300 No-Limit Hold'em Main Event, which boasts a $125,000 guarantee. That one takes place Sunday, Oct. 25 at 5 p.m. local time.

It'll be accompanied by a smaller $50 No-Limit Hold'em Mini Main Event, with a $25,000 guarantee.

Players who enjoy non-hold'em formats will also have plenty to choose from. There are several pot-limit Omaha events, including a $500 six-max high roller. There's even $100 Pot-Limit Badugi, $100 H.O.R.S.E. and $100 5-Card PLO.

PokerStars NJ is also committed to giving frustrated players extra value via freeroll tickets. Those who get eliminated shy of the money will be given tickets into events awarding more NJCOOP seats.

Following up Huge Spring and Summer Series

Action has been intense as ever on PokerStars NJ this year with some big tournament series hitting the client awarding some hefty prizes.

In April, New Jersey Spring Championship of Online Poker ran, with 620 entries in the similar $300 Main Event. "moledaddy" took home more than $30,000 for first place in that one.

A follow-up in July, the Bounty Builders series, saw more than $700,000 awarded over the course of a few weeks. Network superstar Daniel "AvaGray" Lupo, featured here on PokerNews, won about $14K in the Main Event.

Hagerty Gets Buzgon Early

Daniel "loxonbagel" Buzgon was in early position with 404,000 and open-jammed. Action folded around to Ryan "hagz2richez" Hagerty, who was in the big blind and called.

Daniel "loxonbagel" Buzgon: {a-Spades}{k-Hearts}
Ryan "hagz2richez" Hagerty: {j-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

Buzgon found himself flipping for his tournament life until the flop came {9-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{2-Clubs}, leaving him with nothing more than backdoor Broadway outs. The turn {10-Diamonds} kept him alive momentarily, but the river {6-Diamonds} left Buzgon's draw to fall short and he was eliminated in the early minutes of the tournament.

Also knocked out in the first handful of minutes in play were "RchrThnCrkts", "JerseyRU", and "JinxySkunk", all of whom will earn $649 for their efforts.

"Musketqueer3" Busts To Reach Final Five Tables

Level 24 : 15,000/30,000, 3,750 ante
"Musketqueer3"
"Musketqueer3"

On the last hand of the previous level, "MrGgermmm" opened to 51,250 in middle position and was called by "aanzalone123", who was on the button. "Musketqueer3" was in the big blind and three-bet shoved for 208,900, and "MrGgermmm" reraised all in for 1.55 million, quickly getting a fold from "aanzalone123".

"Musketqueer3": {4-Hearts}{4-Clubs}
"MrGgermmm": {a-Diamonds}{k-Hearts}

"Musketqueer3" needed to hold in the coin-flip situation for their tournament life and instead saw a flop of {10-Hearts}{k-Diamonds}{8-Hearts} leave them drawing thin. No help came on the turn {5-Diamonds}, and the river {a-Clubs} fell behind it to complete the runout and leave their fours second best.

Their elimination came just after that of "FizzEdJohn" to bring the field down to 45 players across five full tables, and John "GameofEdges" Forlenza was eliminated shortly thereafter in 45th place to round off the level of payouts at $649. All remaining players are now guaranteed at least $802.
