Sheldon Poe Leads 50 Survivors on Day 1e of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty

Level 18 : Blinds 6,000/12,000, 12,000 ante
Sheldon Poe
Sheldon Poe

After almost 17 full levels of play on Day 1e of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty at the Potomac Winter Poker Open just 50 players remain from an initial field of 639. Leading those 50 players is Sheldon Poe sitting on a large stack of 976,000, far ahead of his nearest competitor, Hiep Nguyen (766,000). Rounding out the top three is Tom Northern, who was able to accumulate 725,000.

Day 1e attracted the most runners out of all the starting flights so far and pushed the total number of entries in the event near to the 2,000 mark. With the current number of players in day 1f, it looks as if the event has in fact surpassed 2,000 entries.

Bubble play did not last long during this flight, with the money reached during Level 17 when the pocket rockets of Xiaohai Wu bested his unfortunate opponent's sixes to leave just 63 players in the field.

With a tournament average stack of just over 20 big blinds, it did not take long for a further 13 players to be sent to the payout desk, bringing the day to an end. Those 13 players, while they will not be returning for Day 2 and the mystery bounty portion of the tournament, do take home $500 for their efforts.

The 50 remaining players will combine with the survivors of the other five flights on Sunday, January 27th at 12 p.m. at which point play will continue until a winner is crowned. Be sure to stay tuned as the Pokernews live reporting team remains on hand to provide comprehensive coverage of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty through to its conclusion.

Wu Bursts the Bubble

Level 17 : Blinds 5,000/10,000, 10,000 ante
Xiaohai Wu
Xiaohai Wu

A player in late position limped and Xiaohai Wu raised to 35,000 on the button. The small blind got out of the way while the big blind moved all in, prompting the late position player to fold. WU instantly called with the larger stack to put his opponent at risk on the bubble.

Big Blind Player: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}
Xiaohai Wu: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}

Wu held a commanding lead and looked set to score the elimination to burst the bubble. That is exactly what happened after the board ran out {7-Hearts}{7-Clubs}{k-Clubs}{4-Clubs}{9-Hearts}. All remaining players have locked up at least $500 with play continuing until just 8% of the field is left.

Kachittavong Felts Kraetz

Level 16 : Blinds 4,000/8,000, 8,000 ante
Soukha Kachittavong
Soukha Kachittavong

Soukha Kachittavong opened to 20,000 from middle position and was called by James Kraetz out of the small blind.

Kraetz led out for 25,000 on a flop of {5-Clubs}{6-Spades}{5-Spades} only to see Kachittavong raise. That did not discourage Kraetz, who responded by moving all in. Kachittavong called just as quickly with the covering stack to put Kraetz at risk.

James Kraetz: {q-Spades}{8-Spades}
Soukha Kachittavong: {9-Diamonds}{9-Spades}

Kachittavong was ahead but would need to fade spades and queens to hold. The {5-Hearts} turn removed many of Kraetz's outs with the {k-Spades} river completing a safe runout for the nines.

Boker Up Big Early

Level 3 : Blinds 200/300, 300 ante
Torsten Boker
Torsten Boker

A player in middle position limped as did the cutoff, button and small blind. Torsten Boker in the big blind was not, however, prepared to let so many players see a cheap flop, opting to raise to 1,800. That was enough to force out the middle position, cutoff and button players but the small blind decided to call.

Action was checked to Boker on a flop of {2-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}{4-Spades} and he continued for 1,500. The small blind, seemingly unconvinced, called.

The {10-Hearts} turn saw the small blind seize the betting lead in dramatic fashion, moving their entire stack into the middle. Boker snapped it off with the covering stack to put his opponent at risk.

Small Blind Player: {6-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}
Torsten Boker: {j-Clubs}{j-Hearts}

Boker was ahead with his overpair, needing only to fade a five on the river. He did just that after the {a-Spades} completed the board, handing him a large pot while sending his opponent to the rail.

Welcome to Day 1e of Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty

Potomac Winter Poker Open Trophy
Potomac Winter Poker Open Trophy

Event #1: $400 Mystery Bounty at the 2023 Potomac Winter Poker Open continues today with day 1e, the fifth of six starting flights.

The first four flights have seen a combined 1,355 entries with just 107 of those players making it through to Day 2. Currently leading the survivors is Aaron Wright of the United States, who bagged a massive 952,000 late last night at the conclusion of day 1d. Other large stacks include day 1b chip leader Shouyi Gao (920,000), Dan Matei (841,000) and Jacob Mitich (806,000).

Play for day 1e is set to begin at 11 a.m. local time. Players taking their seats at that time will start with 25,000 in tournament chips and blinds of 100/100 with a 100 big blind ante. Levels throughout the day will be 30 minutes in length and late registration will remain open until level 12. The money bubble will burst once 10% of the field remains and play will only conclude when 8% of the initial runners are left. Those who make it into the money but bust on Day 1 will receive a flat $500.

The mystery bounty portion of the tournament does not come into play until Day 2, at which stage every remaining player will be assigned a mystery bounty. At that time, if a player knocks out an opponent, they will receive a mystery bounty ticket, which can be redeemed at the mystery bounty redemption table. Potential prizes range in value from $50 to $25,000.

Day 2 resumes on Sunday, January 29th at 12 p.m. with blind levels increasing to 45 minutes. Play will then continue until a winner is crowned.
