Doctor Goes to Work Before Playing Final Table, Ends Up Winning $136,054

One hand changed Kyle Smith’s destiny. He would either have a big chip lead, or, as he called it, he would make the “biggest punt in tournament poker history.” Smith, though, wound up on the right side of that sharp dividing line, and it made all the difference today at the final table of the Potomac Summer Poker Open $3,000 Main Event.

Smith’s double up off start-of-day chip leader Patrick Martorella right at the beginning of the final table gave him a massive chip lead and propelled him on to victory as the family doctor took down the title and $136,054 top prize after agreeing to a heads-up deal with Phong Nguyen.

A deal has been reached between the final two players in the $3,000 Main Event, Kyle Smith and Phong Nguyen.

Smith had a dominant chip lead for much of heads-up play, but Nguyen climbed back to stay in contention. As the stacks evened out, they reached a deal that left Smith taking home the trophy.

We have reached the final day of the 2026 Potomac Summer Poker Open, a series that produced over a dozen winners and will produce three more today.

Most eyes will be on Day 3 of the $3,000 Main Event, which will award $154,006 to the eventual champion.

Another multi-day event, $400 40/40, will wrap up today and award the champion $16,262.

And the final event of the series, $300 Cakes Classic Bounty, will play to a winner as a one-day event.

Ron Hayden Leads, Matt Mullins in Contention in $400 40/40 Event

Just 22 players remain heading into Day 2 of the $400 40/40 event and leading the way is Ron Hayden as the only player with over a million in chips (he bagged 1,070,000).

Day 2 action kicks off now at 2 p.m. local time and will play to a winner. The event drew 222 runners for a prize pool of $73,260, nearly double the $40,000 guarantee.

Each returning player is guaranteed a payday of $716, while a top prize of $16,262 awaits the champion.

Also in the field is Matt Mullins, who took a break from crushing the mixed games to make a run at a Hold'em trophy. PokerNews has an interview with Mullins that you can expect later today.
