In August 1876, gambler and gunslinger “Wild Bill” Hickock was sitting at a poker table inside Nuttal & Mann’s Saloon No. 10 in Deadwood when he was shot and killed by Jack McCall.
In the years that followed, the exploits of Wild Bill, of the town where he was killed, and the last hand he was holding—two pair, aces and eights, the “dead man’s hand—became legendary, becoming a tourist attraction and even spawning an HBO min-series. Deadwood became the quintessential emblem of the Wild West, associated with such names as Calamity Jae and Wyatt Earp.
Today, just a short walk from Hickock’s grave, the tradition continues when the Roughrider Poker Tour $1,140 South Dakota State Poker Championship begins at 3 p.m. local time inside the Silverado Casino.
Day 1a is the first of three starting flights. Players begin with a stack of 30,000, and levels will be 40 minutes long. Late registration remains open until the start of Level 13. Each Day 1 flight will last either 15 levels or down to the top 12 percent of the field, whichever comes first. The action on Day 2 then picks up on the earliest finishing time from one of the three flights.
