Day 1c Completed

Terry Ketterer Crosses a Million on a Record-Shattering Day 1c of the RPT South Dakota State Poker Championship

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante
Terry Ketterer

It was a history-making day inside the Silverado Casino poker room in Deadwood today, and Terry Ketterer rang in the occasion in style.

Ketterer stormed past the million-chip mark and bagged up 1,009,000, giving him an overwhelming chip lead over the remaining 38 players heading to Day 2. Ketterer first won a massive pot in an aces-versus-kings cooler, and his magical day continued later on when he rivered a full house to beat Kodey Hammer’s top pair for another bustout.

Bryan Engebretson is far behind Ketterer but still in second place with 662,000. Mark Fink (483,000) rounds out the podium. It was a family affair today, with Eric Hanson (415,000) and his wife Becky Hanson (275,000) both making it through the day. Clayton McAllister, meanwhile, didn’t do as well as his father Heath yesterday, but he’ll still join him on Day 2 with a stack of 202,000.

Other players to survive the day included Brent Slaubaugh (380,000), Jimmy Hadley (322,000), Brad Magnus (284,000), and Terence Reid (128,000). Joshua Reichard, though, fell right at the end of the night when Rich Grismer flopped quad aces.

Day 1c attracted 293 total entries, bringing the field up to 671 through all three starting flights. That figure far eclipsed last year’s total and makes this the largest event in South Dakota poker history. Just 91 will return tomorrow (Slaubaugh and Skyler Sand qualified twice). The official prize pool should be confirmed shortly after play resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m. local time.

The action on Day 2 picks up with 32 minutes remaining in Level 14 with blinds of 2,000/4,000 and a 4,000 big blind ante. Levels will again be 40 minutes long, and action is scheduled to play down to a champion.

Records were smashed today in Deadwood, chips were flying, and hundreds of dreams were crushed along the way. Tomorrow, though, is when the money starts to be handed out, and PokerNews will be following along the entire way down to the crowning of a champion.

Michael Campbell was eliminated on the last hand of the day yesterday, and he was just all in again in the closing moments of Day 1c as he had his last 69,000 in the middle from the cutoff. Terry Ketterer called in middle position.

Four More Hands

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante

Tournament officials announced that action on Day 1c will conclude once each table plays four more hands.

There are 38 players remaining, but all four hands will still be played even if there are two more eliminations.

Ketterer Crosses a Million Even With Doubling Up Nguyen

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante

Terry Ketterer raised to 17,000 in early position and Lee Nguyen called in the big blind.

Ketterer continued for 15,000 on the AQ6 flop, and Nguyen called. Nguyen then moved all in for 32,000 on the A turn, and Ketterer called.

Nguyen showed KQ for two pair, while Ketterer had JJ. The Q river improved Nguyen to a full house, and he earned the double up.

Despite dropping that pot, Ketterer has still climbed up past 1,000,000.

Grismer Doubles, Rose Cannot

Level 15 : Blinds 3,000/5,000, 5,000 ante

Doug Rose moved all in for 55,000 in middle position, Craig Pohlmann reshoved on the button, and the rest of the table got out of the way.

Doug Rose: A10 All in
Craig Pohlmann: AK

The 75334 board was no help to Rose, and Pohlmann's king-kicker continued to play to earn him the knockout.

The next hand at this table, Rich Grismer shoved for 60,000 in the hijack and Mark Fink called in the small blind.

Rich Grismer: J10 All in
Mark Fink: AJ

Grismer was dominated going to the flop, which came 1045 to give him the lead with top pair. The rest of the board ran out 5Q and Grismer doubled up.
