Terry Ketterer Crosses a Million on a Record-Shattering Day 1c of the RPT South Dakota State Poker Championship
It was a history-making day inside the Silverado Casino poker room in Deadwood today, and Terry Ketterer rang in the occasion in style.
Ketterer stormed past the million-chip mark and bagged up 1,009,000, giving him an overwhelming chip lead over the remaining 38 players heading to Day 2. Ketterer first won a massive pot in an aces-versus-kings cooler, and his magical day continued later on when he rivered a full house to beat Kodey Hammer’s top pair for another bustout.

Bryan Engebretson is far behind Ketterer but still in second place with 662,000. Mark Fink (483,000) rounds out the podium. It was a family affair today, with Eric Hanson (415,000) and his wife Becky Hanson (275,000) both making it through the day. Clayton McAllister, meanwhile, didn’t do as well as his father Heath yesterday, but he’ll still join him on Day 2 with a stack of 202,000.
Other players to survive the day included Brent Slaubaugh (380,000), Jimmy Hadley (322,000), Brad Magnus (284,000), and Terence Reid (128,000). Joshua Reichard, though, fell right at the end of the night when Rich Grismer flopped quad aces.
Day 1c attracted 293 total entries, bringing the field up to 671 through all three starting flights. That figure far eclipsed last year’s total and makes this the largest event in South Dakota poker history. Just 92 will return tomorrow (Slaubaugh qualified twice). The official prize pool should be confirmed shortly after play resumes tomorrow at 11 a.m. local time.
The action on Day 2 picks up with 32 minutes remaining in Level 14 with blinds of 2,000/4,000 and a 4,000 big blind ante. Levels will again be 40 minutes long, and action is scheduled to play down to a champion.
Records were smashed today in Deadwood, chips were flying, and hundreds of dreams were crushed along the way. Tomorrow, though, is when the money starts to be handed out, and PokerNews will be following along the entire way down to the crowning of a champion.
