Derek Bowers

After a marathon day of poker, Derek Bowers of Alliance, Ohio is the first-ever champion of the RunGood Poker Series Cleveland Main Event, an $800 buy-in tournament that attracted 712 entries.

He defeated Donald Mullen in a short heads-up match to conclude a nearly 16-hour day of poker at the JACK Cleveland Casino to claim a $86,560 first-place prize, the RunGood Series champions ring, and a trip to Las Vegas plus entry into the RunGood Pro-Am this December.

The $86,560 is the second-largest score of Bowers’ career, which has seen him now amass over $800,000 in tournament earnings after his win this weekend. It’s his first recorded live win since 2014 according to the Hendon Mob.

“It feels good. It feels good to just win a tournament," he said. "It’s been a long time and it feels good to just get the monkey off my back.”

Bowers came into Day 2 with the second-largest stack in play after claiming the chip lead on Day 1c with 565,000 chips. He’d turn that into over 21 million chips and the title by the time the night was done.

With two tables remaining, Bowers still sat second in chips behind only Paul Campbell, who fell in third place, but he still had to work his way through a talented remaining field that included two-time WSOP bracelet winner Sean Troha, who fell in 14th place, and Western New York star DJ MacKinnon, who bowed out in 11th.

Once the final table was reached, Bowers got right to work on building himself a chip lead as he immediately eliminated Stephen Stock Jr.

His stack would swing a bit as the night wore on, but he seemed fresh throughout play even deep into the night as play concluded at 3:30 a.m. local time.

“I’m fine. I could probably play another day if I had to. I’ve played four days straight before. It’s been a long time, but yeah, I think I could.”

As play got down to four-handed, that’s when Bowers took control, first eliminating Nicholas Lanzi with an aces-versus-queens preflop cooler, then with the lead he used his stack well, scooping two million chips uncontested after a rare four-bet at the final table.

Following Campbell’s elimination in third place, Bowers had an over 3-1 chip lead heads-up and made short work of Mullen to claim the title and the ring.

Donald Mullen Eliminated in 2nd Place ($61,410)

Level 32 : Blinds 150,000/300,000, 300,000 ante
Donald Mullen
Donald Mullen

Donald Mullen jammed 4,600,000 on the button and after some deliberation, Derek Bowers chose to call with a chance to win the tournament.

Donald Mullen: {q-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}
Derek Bowers: {a-Spades}{7-Hearts}

The {a-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{q-Diamonds} flop paired both players and the {j-Hearts} turn brought some chop outs for Mullen.

Unfortunately for him, the {k-Spades} fell on the river, ending an impressive run in second place, while crowning Derek Bowers the champion.

Paul Campbell

Paul Campbell moved all in on the small blind for 2,000,000 and got called by Donald Mullen in the big blind.

Paul Campbell: {q-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Donald Mullen: {k-Clubs}{q-Hearts}

Campbell was dominated, and after the board came {5-Diamonds}{7-Spades}{7-Hearts}{j-Hearts}{q-Diamonds}, he was eliminated, earning an even $60,000 for his third-place effort.

Mullen and Derek Bowers will now play heads up for the title and the RunGood Series champions ring.

Nicholas Lanzi Eliminated in 4th Place ($33,895)

Level 30 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Nicholas Lanzi
Nicholas Lanzi

A major cooler has seen Nicholas Lanzi the latest to hit the rail.

Lanzi moved all in from the cutoff for 1,450,000 and was called in the small blind by Derek Bowers.

Nicholas Lanzi: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Derek Bowers: {a-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}

Aces versus queens is about as rough as it gets preflop, and Lanzi was finished off quickly with a {a-Hearts}{10-Spades}{9-Clubs} flop, that left him needing runners to survive.

They didn't come as the board was completed with the {3-Spades} and {8-Clubs} to send him to the rail in third place.

Mullen Gets Tricky and Gets Paid

Level 30 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Donald Mullen
Donald Mullen

Donald Mullen opened with a limp in the cutoff which was followed by a limp from Derek Bowers on the button, a call from Paul Campbell in the small blind, and a check by Nicholas Lanzi in the big blind.

On the {8-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{3-Hearts} flop, action checked to Mullen who bet 485,000. Only Bowers called to see the {k-Hearts} on the turn. The players checked to the {4-Spades} river and Mullen bet 700,000.

Bowers made the call and saw Mullen roll over {a-Diamonds}{a-Hearts} for sneakily played aces, which won him a big pot to take over the chip lead.

Mullen Survives With Chop, Then Doubles Through Bowers

Level 30 : Blinds 100,000/200,000, 200,000 ante
Donald Mullen
Donald Mullen

Donald Mullen moved all in on the button for 2,200,000 and got called by Derek Bowers in the small blind. Paul Campbell folded the big blind and Mullen was at-risk and dominated.

Donald Mullen: {a-Hearts}{8-Spades}
Derek Bowers: {a-Diamonds}{q-Spades}

Mallen was in trouble, but the runout of {5-Hearts}{9-Spades}{5-Clubs}{2-Hearts}{9-Hearts}, double paired the board and kept Mullen alive with the chop.

A couple of hands later, Mullen moved in again for 1,900,000 and again Bowers called.

Donald Mullen: {6-Diamonds}{6-Spades}
Derek Bowers: {a-Hearts}{8-Spades}

This time it was Bowers with the ace-eight, same suits and all.

The {j-Spades}{6-Spades}{4-Hearts} settled things quickly with a set for Mullen. The board completed {j-Spades}{2-Diamonds}, and this time Mullen successfully doubled through Bowers.

After Derek Bowers opened to 350,000 in the cutoff, Anthony Carbone moved all in for 1,220,000.

Paul Campbell moved in over top with both players covered for over 6,000,000.

Bowers showed {a-Spades}{q-Clubs} and folded, leaving Carbone's tournament life in the hands of Campbell.

Anthony Carbone: {k-Diamonds}{j-Diamonds}
Paul Campbell: {k-Spades}{k-Hearts}

The Day 1a chip leader knew he was in rough shape, and after the board came [7h2s2h9s6], his fears were confirmed as he was eliminated in fifth place.

Michael Volk Eliminated in 6th Place ($19,155)

Level 28 : Blinds 60,000/120,000, 120,000 ante
Michael Volk
Michael Volk

After Nicholas Lanzi raised to 250,000 in the hijack, Michael Volk moved in from the cutoff for 675,000.

Action folded back to Lanzi who called.

Michael Volk: {5-Clubs}{5-Diamonds}
Nicholas Lanzi: {k-Clubs}{q-Spades}

The flop came {2-Clubs}{j-Spades}{7-Clubs}, bringing no help to Lanzi. The {9-Diamonds} turn gave him some additional outs to a gutshot straight.

That straight dramatically came in on the river with the {10-Spades}, as Lanzi eliminated Volk to bring the field down to five.

Lanzi Doubles Through Volk

Nicholas Lanzi
Nicholas Lanzi

Nicholas Lanzi moved all in under the gun for about 1,400,000 and got called by Michael Volk in the cutoff. The rest of the table folded and Lanzi was at risk.

Nicholas Lanzi: {q-Hearts}{j-Diamonds}
Michael Volk: {10-Diamonds}{10-Spades}

The {8-Spades}{3-Clubs}{8-Hearts} flop was safe for Volk, as was the {k-Hearts}, but on the river, the dealer dropped the {q-Clubs} for Lanzi to snatch the pot from Volk and keep the tournament six-handed.
