Brian Winter Crushes Again to Lead 8 Players from Day 1a into Day 2 of the RGPS Jacksonville Main Event

Level 14 : Blinds 2,000/4,000, 4,000 ante
Brian Winter

After just over 13 levels of play, RunGood Poker Series Player of the Year leader Brian Winter is the chip leader in the opening flight of the $1,200 Destination RunGood: Jacksonville Main Event at bestbet Jacksonville.

The opening flight drew 59 players, from which eight will return on Sunday for the Day 2 finale. They’re all fighting for a piece of the $300,000 guarantee, a bestbet trophy, and a coveted RGPS ring.

Winter is followed by Dimas Martinez Jr. in second and John Connors in third, the only other players over 300,000. Tyler Phillips and Raminder Singh round out the top five.

Day 1a Highlights

The day kicked off with 21 players in their seats and among them were Day 2 qualifiers Matthew Wright, Martinez Jr. and Phillips. Reigning RGPS Jacksonville champion Antwan Prince also stopped by, but he failed to make it to Day 2.

Wayne Murphy was one of the early chip leaders after he cracked a pair of pocket kings with ace-seven, but his run came to an end in Level 9 when his own kings ran into Winter’s aces. Local favorite Edward Mroczkowski jumped in, as well, but he did not make it to Day 2 from the opening flight.

Winter took his seat in Level 4 and he chipped up steadily prior to his hand with Murphy, but he didn’t stop there. Pablo Valdivieso, winner of the opening tournament in the series, held the lead at different points in early stages of the day. Eventually, Valdivieso got it in with ace-queen against Winter in a hand where the former jammed after the opening round of betting but before he saw the flop. Winter called quickly with pocket aces and held on to cross the 400K mark for the day.

For a while, Winter’s closest competitor was Singh, but a late hand against Martinez allowed Winter to hang on for the overall chip lead. Singh picked up a set on the river, but the same card gave Martinez a straight and Singh fell back to the middle of the pack.

Connors was also a late mover with a few pots that put him near the top of the leaderboard, most notably the bubble hand. James Ollis got the last of it in with nine players left and pocket tens, but Connors called with a suited ace-four and a third four on the river sealed the fate of Ollis.

Day 1a wrapped up with 25 minutes left in Level 13. The tournament will offer two more opening flights on Friday and Saturday, both at 12 p.m. local time. All surviving players will return on Sunday at 12 p.m. to play down to a winner in the Day 2 finale.

Action was heads up with 1024 on the board when Dimas Martinez Jr. bet 4,000 and James Ollis called.

The turn was 9 and this time it was a bet of 7,000 from Martinez. Ollis called once again and the river was 7.

Martinez fired 15,000 on the river and Ollis called without much hesitation.

"Pocket queens," Martinez said as he turned over QQ. Ollis checked again and mucked the losing hand.

Winter Finishes Murphy

Level 9 : Blinds 600/1,200, 1,200 ante

Action was heads up with 8AA29 on the board and around 15,000 in the middle when Wayne Murphy bet 8,000. Brian Winter responded with a stack of T-5,000 chips that put Murphy call in.

Murphy let out an annoyed sigh and called. Winter had A8 for the flopped full out and Murphy showed A7 before he made his way for the door.

John Connors waved down the PokerNews team to share a cooler that sent Brian Winter above 200K.

"I was eating a cheeseburger. I only saw the result," Connors said.

Winter was kind enough to share the details. He raised from the button and Wayne Murphy three-bet to 6,000. Winter fired back with 18,000 and Murphy called to see a flop of 9x7x5x.

Murphy bet 20,000 on the flop and Winter raised to 60,000. Winter had about 111,000 and he called when Murphy put him all in. Murphy turned over KxKx and Winter had AxAx.

The board finished up with 9x and 5x to give Winter the big pot and the chip lead.

Brian Winter

RGPS Player of the Year points leader Brian Winter has taken his seat in the Main Event — just hours after he won yet another ring in the $660 6-Max event.

Winter sits just shy of 2,000 points, while Shaun Emery is the only other competitor with more than 1,000 as the two continue to dominate the leader board heading into this week’s stop at bestbet Jacksonville.

How it works:

  • Leaderboard Points: Players will score points based on their performance in RunGood Poker Series events by the Global Poker Index ranking system.
  • Five Winners: The tally started on August 29th, 2023, and end June 1st, 2024. The top five players on the leaderboard will win a seat in the 2024 Hendon Mob Mid-Major Championship and a $500 travel stipend.
  • Immortality: The top player will be featured forever on tour with a RunGood Player of the Year banner.
