Action of the Day

All the excitement of the day was based around the battle between GGPoker ambassadors Niall Farrell and Lukas Robinson, where their teams of freeroll qualifiers battled to be the last man standing.

Team Firaldo vs Team Robin
Team Firaldo vs Team Robin

However captain Farrell would let his team down as he was eliminated after only one hour of play as his pocket queens lost against pocket kings.

After that Team Robin was firmly in the lead as members of Team Firaldo started to drop. However, members of Team Robin bowed out later in the day as the numbers evened out.

Notables such as Will Kassouf and Jessica Pilkington were in the field but will have to return tomorrow if they want to get their hand on some of the £500,000 guaranteed prizepool as both failed to bag along with Farrell.

Mohammed Ghani coolered Fabian Donovan early in the day as Donovan rivered trips while Ghani rivered a full house to win a huge pot early in the day. However, Ghani would drop right at the end of the day at the hands of Obadun's pocket jacks.

Nick McLennan ran hot towards the end of the day as he took out two in back-to-back hands, including the elimination of Anastasi Vasilou as McLennan turned a straight against Vasilou's top set.

The final members of Team Firaldo and Team Robin were Gurvinder Shergill and Lukas Robinson who were both short on the bubble but they would both bag as Winston Jones would be the bubble boy when he shoved king queen from the small blind only to run into James Langston's pocket kings.

The elimination of Winston Jones brought the days proceeding to an end as the remaining 42 players will join the 32 players from Day 1a as well as the survivors from the online flights for Day 2 on Monday 16th January at 12 p.m. local time.

Stayed tuned tomorrow to PokerNews for Day 1c as players will have their last chance to try and make it to Day 2. Cards will be in the air from 12 p.m. local time. PokerNews will give all the updates until a champion is crowned.

McLellan Takes Out Two

Level 13 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

The chips all went into the middle on the flop of {7-Clubs}{6-Hearts}{5-Spades} as Anastasi Vasilou was all in from the hijack against Nick McLennan in the small blind.

Anastasi Vasilou: {7-Hearts}{7-Diamonds}
Nick McLennan: {9-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}

Vasilou had flopped top set while McLennan had an overpair and a gutshot. However it would be heartbreak for Vasilou as the turn came the {8-Spades} to give McLennan a straight. The river came the {q-Spades} which was met with a scream of delight from McLennan as Vasilou was eliminated.

The very next hand under the gun moved all in for around 400,000 from under the gun. Action folded to McLennan who called on the button. The blinds folded.

Under the gun: {9-Hearts}{9-Spades}
Nick McLennan: {a-Spades}{k-Diamonds}

McLennan's luck would continue as the flop came {a-Diamonds}{j-Spades}{2-Spades} which set his opponent up for elimination. The turn of the {2-Clubs} and the river of the {4-Hearts} ensured that McLennan would secure his second straight knockout.

Philip Roberts: {a-Spades}{8-Spades}
Francis Obadun: {a-Hearts}{9-Spades}

Roberts was at risk and behind but the flop came {10-Diamonds}{8-Diamonds}{2-Diamonds} which put Roberts ahead. The turn came the {j-Spades} which gave Obadun an open-ended-straight-draw. However it didn't come in as the river came the {5-Diamonds} to give Roberts the double up.

Level 13 : 10,000/20,000, 20,000 ante

Ilana Belsky raised to 60,000 in the hijack before Daniel Jackson three-bet to 160,000 in the cutoff. Chris Cunliffe four-bet all in for 400,000 on the button. Belsky folded and Jackson quickly called.

Chris Cunliffe: {a-Clubs}{q-Clubs}
Daniel Jackson: {k-Spades}{q-Hearts}

Cunliffe had Jackson dominated and needed to hold to double up. The board ran out clean as it came {8-Diamonds}{4-Hearts}{4-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}{5-Spades} to allow Cunliffe to survive in the tournament.
