Livingston Tops Balanced Day 1b Standings

Level 15 : 1,500/3,000, 500 ante
Matt Livingston
Matt Livingston

A strong turnout showed up for Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates Day 1b, with 180 runners pushing the two-day total to 306 with still one more flight left. Thirty-seven of those bagged up, and Matt Livingston managed to amass 316,000 to hold a slim lead at the end of the night over Corey Zedo, who finished with 310,000. Livingston has some solid results with more that $242,000 in live cashes, including a big score in this summer's Millionaire Maker at the World Series of Poker worth $79,582 for 14th place.

The final chip distribution ended up much more even than Day 1a, when Blake Bohn and Alex Greenblatt bagged vast leads over the competition. Others near the top of the counts included Eric Maier (278,000), Ben Keeline (274,500), bracelet winner John Beauprez (251,500), and Michael Lech (232,000). Feared pro Kevin "1sickdisease" Eyster (161,500), two-time MSPT champ Jason Zarlenga (150,000), Steve Anderson (120,000), Mike Ross (107,000), and former Main Event runner-up Paul Wasicka (86,500) also survived the 15 levels.

Livingston tallied a stack of around 200,000 during Level 11 (600/1,200/200), which put him in contention for the lead. A few levels later, he had run it up to over 300,000, and he sailed to the finish without much variance either way, it seemed.

Beauprez jumped into contention for the lead late in Level 13 (1,000/2,000/300), when Zarlenga opened for 4,200 in early position and was called by Noomis Jones in the small blind. Big blind Beauprez made it about 13,000 to go, and both opponents called. The flop brought {4-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{q-Spades}, and Jones checked. Beauprez continuation-bet 18,000, getting a fold from Zarlenga. Jones was stickier though, and put in a raise of 25,000 more. Beauprez thought only briefly before moving all in, and Jones called for 60,100 more.

Beauprez: {a-Hearts}{q-Hearts}
Jones: {k-Clubs}{q-Clubs}

It was the worst-case flop for Jones, and he found no king on the last two streets as two tens fell.

As for Zarlenga, he grinded a short stack like a trooper for most of the day, as seemingly every big pot we noted him in involved a raise and maybe a call before Zarlenga jammed it in and won the money without a showdown. Finally, with just minutes on the clock before the end of the night, he had to turn a hand over when he shoved for about 10 big blinds over a late position open from Beauprez and was called. Zarlenga did have the best of it with {q-Spades}{j-Spades} against {7-Spades}{3-Spades}, and his hand held.

Wasicka had an up-and-down Day 1b, busting an early bullet when Phil Mader trapped him on a flop of {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades}, getting all in with {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs} against Wasicka's {9-Clubs}{9-Spades} and holding. Wasicka got things going on his second try, running his stack up to about 200,000 after dragging a huge three-way all in after a {5-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} flop. Wasicka had flopped a set with {5-Spades}{5-Diamonds} and got his money in way ahead against Anderson's {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds} and a short stack holding {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}. Late in the night, however, Wasicka ran {a-}{q-} into {k-}{k-} and lost about half of his stack.

Mader, Allen "Chainsaw" Kessler, Brady Bullard, Kris Wagner, Will Givens, Adam Friedman, Adam Lamphere, Phanora Prom, John Holley, Josh Reichard, Chris Tryba, Jeff Bryan, and Danny Ray Gonzales were among the notables taking shots and missing today. Their final chance to qualify for Sunday's Day 2 will be Day 1c on Saturday, which will commence at noon local time.

Wasicka Doubles Through Anderson

Paul Wasicka
Paul Wasicka

A flop of {5-Clubs}{10-Clubs}{6-Hearts} had prompted a flurry of action at Paul Wasicka's table, where we found him all in for 78,600. Another player was already all in for about 21,000, and Steve Anderson, who had already had a pile of chips in, opted to call.

Anderson: {j-Spades}{10-Diamonds}
Wasicka: {5-Diamonds}{5-Spades}
Third player: {k-Diamonds}{j-Clubs}

Wasicka had a hammerlock on the hand, and the {8-Spades} turn made the pot his.

Quads Seal it for Lang

Level 12 : 800/1,600, 200 ante
David Lang
David Lang

We found a massive pot brewing after an {a-Spades}{7-Spades}{9-Hearts} flop, with the big blind having bet 10,500 and gotten shoved on for 27,600 by a player in early position. David Lang, in middle position, cold-called, and the big blind thought for about a minute before announcing all in. Lang called off for roughly 85,000.

Lang: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}
Big blind: {a-Hearts}{7-Hearts}
Early position: {a-Diamonds}{3-Diamonds}

Only one ace remained in the deck, and it didn't appear as the {2-Clubs} hit the turn and a {9-Diamonds} river finished out the hand in style for Lang with quads.

Gonzales Snaps

Level 10 : 500/1,000, 100 ante
Danny Ray Gonzales
Danny Ray Gonzales

Danny Ray Gonzales opened for a raise preflop in the cutoff and was called by the player on the button. After the {k-Spades}{9-Clubs}{6-Diamonds} flop, he bet 2,000 and saw his foe raise to 6,000. Gonzales called, and a {5-Diamonds} turned. He checked, and his opponent moved all in for about 20,000.

"Call," Gonzales said quickly and forcefully, turning over {8-Diamonds}{7-Diamonds} for the nuts. His opponent showed {k-Hearts}{j-Hearts} and was drawing dead.

"Did you like the turn?" someone at the table asked with a laugh.

Mader Busts Wasicka

Level 8 : 300/600, 75 ante
Phil Mader
Phil Mader

Phil Mader opened for 1,300 in middle position and was called by Paul Wasicka on the button and both blinds. On the {6-Spades}{4-Hearts}{2-Spades} flop, the small blind bet out 1,500 and Mader called after the big blind folded. Wasicka made it 5,000 to go, forcing out the small blind, and Mader went into the tank. After some thought, he put 17,000 in, causing Wasicka to tank even longer.

"How long does a player have?" the small blind said. "Can I call the clock?"

"Sorry, but when you have this," she said, holding up a short stack of about 13,000, "you need to see some cards."

Wasicka elected to push all in for about 30,000, and the Nebraskan quickly called.

Mader: {a-Hearts}{a-Clubs}
Wasicka: {9-Clubs}{9-Spades}

Mader was way in front, and running fives iced it for him.

Wasicka reentered and has been seated at the table nearest the media table.

Givens Busts to Reichard in Crazy Pot

Level 5 : 150/300, 25 ante
Josh Reichard
Josh Reichard

We found Josh Reichard with 3,150 in front of him in the small blind, facing two all-in wagers. One was from Will Givens, who has about 20,000 in middle position, while the player on the button was all in for about 12,000. Reichard made the call.

Reichard: {a-Clubs}{j-Clubs}
Givens: {k-Spades}{j-Spades}
Button: {q-Clubs}{10-Clubs}

"Nice call, I thought you had ace-queen," Givens said to Reichard.

The most live cards were held by the player on the button though, and he was the one to improve on the {q-Hearts}{6-Diamonds}{2-Spades} flop. A {6-Hearts} turn was a blank, and a {q-Diamonds} river sealed it for the player on the button.

Apparently, the action had begun with a player who opened to 650 in early position and was called by Givens. The player on the button then put out 1,050, trying to get change, but the bet was ruled a raise. Reichard cold four-bet to the 3,150 we saw, folding out the opener, and Givens jammed it in. The player on the button, not noticing the all in, announced a call, and was forced to call off his stack.

"I couldn't have played that any worse at any time," he said after the hand.

Reichard collected a small side pot from Givens, while the player on the button tripled.

Wasicka in the House

Level 3 : 100/200, 0 ante
Paul Wasicka, pictured at the WSOP.
Paul Wasicka, pictured at the WSOP.

One of the players who just registered and took a seat at Table 15 is a name that will be familiar to anyone who has paid attention to televised poker over the past decade: Paul Wasicka, former World Series of Poker Main Event runner-up. Wasicka was a little-known player coming up in the poker world with a few nice cashes when he entered the 2006 Main Event. There, he nearly made poker history by winning the biggest Main Event ever, finishing second to Jamie Gold for just over $6.1 million.

Wasicka continued to experience success on the felt, as he followed that up the next year with a $455,615 score for fourth in the LAPC and then a win in the National Heads-Up Championship for another $500,000. Wasicka also claimed a ring in a circuit main event for $139,422 in 2010. Since that year, his tournament cashes have come exclusively at the WSOP, with the last score coming in the Main Event last year for $24480.

The Denver resident evidently decided to dust off the poker chops and take a run at the Mid-States Poker Tour, and he's off to a good start after betting all three streets with {k-Spades}{j-Spades} on a {k-Diamonds}{5-Hearts}{3-Diamonds}{8-Clubs}{4-Clubs} run out and getting paid off.

Lamphere Two-Outed

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Adam Lamphere bet 6,000 from the big blind on a board of {2-Diamonds}{5-Clubs}{7-Spades}{5-Spades}, and Jesse Notz moved all in for 20,400 in the cutoff after thinking things over for awhile. Lamphere snapped it off, rolling over {7-Clubs}{7-Diamonds} for top boat, and he needed to fade only two aces as Notz showed {a-Diamonds}{a-Spades}. The dealer burned and turned the {a-Hearts} though, causing some "wows" to come from the table.

Welcome to Day 1b of Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates

MSPT Golden Gates
MSPT Golden Gates

After tour pro Blake Bohn rampaged through Day 1a to the tune of a 511,500 bag up at the end of the night, Day 1b is set to kick off at noon local time here in Black Hawk, Colo., when we will see if anyone can match this lofty feat. A total of 126 runners fired it up on the opening flight, and with a more easily accessible day for most people's jobs, we may see a slightly larger field today.

Some of the players who bought in but failed to make it through included Chris Tryba, Mike Ross, Allen Kessler, Brady Bullard, Josh Reichard, John Holley, and Ben Keeline, so they will more than likely be in attendance.

Starting stacks will be 30,000 instead of the usual 20,000. Other than that, the normal Allen Kessler-approved blind structure will be in place, with 40-minute levels starting at 50/100. Fifteen levels are scheduled today, and players may reenter as many times as they wish.
