Day 1c Started

Welcome to Day 1c of Mid-States Poker Tour Golden Gates

Corey Zedo was among the leaders last night.
Corey Zedo was among the leaders last night.

With two Day 1 flights complete and 63 players having punched tickets to Day 2, just one final chance remains to advance to the championship day. Day 1c will kick off at noon local time here in Black Hawk, Colo., amid a snowfall here in the mountains.

Last night, Matt Livingston and Corey Zedo each bagged over 300,000 to join Alex Greenblatt and Blake Bohn from Day 1a at the top of the chip counts, though everyone is well behind Bohn's 511,500. Others making it through Day 1b included Eric Maier (278,000), Ben Keeline (274,500), bracelet winner John Beauprez (251,500), and Michael Lech (232,000). Feared pro Kevin "1sickdisease" Eyster (161,500), two-time MSPT champ Jason Zarlenga (150,000), Steve Anderson (120,000), Mike Ross (107,000), and former Main Event runner-up Paul Wasicka (86,500) also survived the 15 levels.

Starting stacks will be 30,000 instead of the usual 20,000. Other than that, the normal Allen Kessler-approved blind structure will be in place, with 40-minute levels starting at 50/100. Fifteen levels are scheduled today, and players may reenter as many times as they wish. A strong turnout could push the total entries over 500, but the weather could be an impediment.

McCray Back for Another Crack

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Jonathan McCray is among the early birds sitting in here. He got second last time the Mid-States Poker Tour was here, falling heads up to Dan Colpoys and taking home $63,420. McCray skipped the first two days of the tournament. We still haven't seen Colpoys.

Flush Over Flush

Level 1 : 50/100, 0 ante

Three players saw the turn in a large pot at one of the tables, which made the board {10-Hearts}{5-Spades}{8-Hearts}{3-Hearts}. A player in the blinds checked, and a middle-position player bet 5,000. Sylvain Cote called in the cutoff, and the first player folded. On the {k-Clubs} river, the middle player bet another 5,000, and Cote made it 12,000. The middle player shook his head and called after about a minute.

Cote showed {a-Hearts}{9-Hearts} for the nut flush.

"Show me your flush," he said.

The player obliged, flashing {7-Hearts}{2-Hearts}.

Quads for Denicholas

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Jerry Denicholas bet 2,125 from the small blind on a board of {3-Diamonds}{6-Clubs}{9-Spades}{6-Spades} and was called by a player in middle position. On the {10-Clubs} river, he tossed out a red T5,000 chip and was called once again.

"Quads," he said forcefully, slapping {6-Hearts}{6-Diamonds} onto the table.

Duran Doubles Up

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

On a board of {5-Hearts}{9-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{10-Clubs}, Noe Duran had checked from the small blind and saw his opponent in the big bet 20,000 into a pot of about 5,500. Duran tossed out a call, and the river brought an {a-Spades}. Duran tossed his last 2,025 in, and his opponent called.

"You're good," Duran said, turning over {10-Diamonds}{10-Hearts} for a set.

The big blind, though, showed {10-Spades}{9-Clubs} for two pair.

"I thought you took one off with queen-jack," Duran said.

Wahdan Gets Lucky

Level 2 : 75/150, 0 ante

Nader Wahdan limped under the gun and then reraised when the player in the big blind raised. Wahdan ended up getting it all in with {q-}{q-} against {a-}{a-} when he called the player's subsequent shove, and and the first four cards came {9-Diamonds}{3-Spades}{4-Clubs}{k-Diamonds} leaving with two outs, one of which was the {q-Spades} on the river. Wahdan had 17,275, so he's back above the starting stack.

Wahdan, an Aurora, Colo., native, is coming off of a win in September's HPT event here for $226,891. He topped a final table that included Phil Mader, who got third and is in action here today.
