The MSPT FireKeepers Champ Puts His Life on the Line

Level 26 : 20,000/40,000, 5,000 ante

Back in May, Jason Zarlenga topped a field of 411 entries to win the 2014 MSPT FireKeepers Casino for $101,482. With either a second or first-place finish Zarelgna will become the all-time MSPT money earner, and he just took a big step toward that honor with a big double through Paul Mattioda.

It happened when Zarlenga opened for 90,000 from the cutoff and Mattioda three-bet to 230,000 from the button. Both blinds folded, Zarlenga four-bet all in for 674,000, and Mattioda made the call.

Mattioda: {6-Diamonds}{6-Hearts}
Zarlenga: {10-Hearts}{10-Diamonds}

Zarlenga had the best of it, and his pocket pair held up as the board ran out an uneventful {4-Clubs}{j-Spades}{3-Diamonds}{k-Diamonds}{8-Hearts}.

Edelstein Shoves on Sunny

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante

We picked up the action on a {10-Spades}{6-Spades}{a-Clubs} flop when Rob Edelstein bet 70,000 from middle position and Sunny Ali called from the button. After the dealer burned and turned the {7-Spades}, Edelstein checked and Ali fired out 200,000. Edelstein woke up with an all-in check-raise to 723,000, and Ali hit the tank for a brief spell before releasing his hand.

Tuan Nguyen Eliminated in 8th Place ($13,639)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
Tuan Nguyen
Tuan Nguyen

On Hand #25 of the final table, Tuan Nguyen opened for 65,000 from the hijack and chip leader Sunny Ali defended from the big blind, which brought about a flop of {8-Diamonds}{k-Spades}{k-Diamonds}. Ali checked, Nguyen bet 115,000, and Ali instantly check-raised all in. Nguyen only had 274,000 behind and thought for more than a minute before calling off.

Nguyen: {q-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}
Ali: {a-Clubs}{j-Diamonds}

"Nice call," Ali complimented before the dealer burned and turned the {J-Clubs}.

"No ace," said Nguyen, who was on his feet. Indeed, either an ace or jack would give Ali the win, and much to Nguyen's dismay, the former came when the {A-Spades} spiked on the river!

Nguyen will take home $13,639 for his eighth-place finish

David Sutton Eliminated in 9th Place ($9,414)

Level 25 : 15,000/30,000, 4,000 ante
David Sutton
David Sutton

David Sutton was just eliminated from the tournament in ninth place after a series of two hands.

On Hand #15 of the final table, Sutton opened for 100,000 and then called when Rob Edelstein moved all in for 435,000.

Sutton: {8-Hearts}{8-Clubs}
Edelstein: {a-Diamonds}{q-Hearts}

Sutton got it in good, but Edelstein managed to take the lead on the {a-Hearts}{k-Hearts}{4-Diamonds} flop. Neither the {10-Diamonds} turn nor {10-Spades} river helped Sutton, and he was left with just 110,000.

In the very next hand, Paul Mattioda opened for 70,000 and then called when Sutton moved all in for 106,000 total from the big blind.

Mattioda: {q-Clubs}{j-Spades}
Sutton: {q-Diamonds}{5-Diamonds}

The {10-Clubs}{7-Spades}{a-Diamonds} flop was no help to Sutton, but the {J-Diamonds} turn actually gave him a flush draw. It didn't come in though as the {5-Spades} blanked on the river and Mattioda won the pot with a pair of jacks. Sutton wished the table luck and then made his way to the payout desk to collect $9,414 for his ninth-place finish.

Adam Lamphere Eliminated in 10th Place ($6,109)

Level 24 : 12,000/24,000, 4,000 ante
Adam Lamphere - 10th Place
Adam Lamphere - 10th Place

On the first hand of the final table, MSPT regular Adam Lamphere raised from early position only to have chip leader Sunny Ali three-bet to 250,000 from the button. The blinds both folded, Lamphere made the call, and it was heads-up action to the {7-Clubs}{a-Diamonds}{q-Spades} flop, which they both checked.

When the {3-Hearts} appeared on the turn, Lamphere led out for 115,000 and Ali immediately announced a raise to 700,000. Lamphere, who only had 535,000 behind, thought for awhile before calling off.

Lamphere: {a-Clubs}{k-Clubs}
Ali: {q-Hearts}{q-Clubs}

Ali had flopped a set, and Lamphere was drawing dead. The meaningless {3-Hearts} was put out on the river for good measure, and then Lamphere exited the stage in 10th place for $6,109.
